  1. Hey David I have been to Hobby Haven, but it's been a while back when I used to fly airplanes and helicopters. When I was there (mind you this was 10 years ago) I did not get good service from them at all. I'll have to take a trip back up to them and see if anything has changed. I'll give anyone a second chance but that's about it. Not going to toss out my HARD earned money for someone who doesn't appreciate it. To everyone else, thank you so much for the awesome feedback! I'm going to check out each of the places listed here and see what kind of deals I can find. I love the old hot rod's and custom cars from the 40's and early 50's. I'm really looking for a '49 custom Cady. I found one very similar on a website but I need to do a bit more research on it! Thanks again everyone! Happy building. Eddie
  2. Well for me it is the memories of my Dad and I building these models when I was a young boy. He got me started on them and I loved them. As a young boy I probably built 10-15 models all of which I usually bought with my allowance and he and I would sit down and paint and glue everything together. He showed me the patience it takes to build them. Now he is unable to build anything with me due to his age but I have retaken up the hobby for him, and me too! This go around though I'm going to start putting my own personal touches on them and make them my way.
  3. Just a thought that came immediately to mind but have no idea if it would work. But what about scale size old coca-cola bottles I've seen in model railroads? It is really close in shape and size if you get the HO size. You would just need to come up with the mounting brackets for it. Just a thought. I'm sure someone else will have a better idea.
  4. Hey guys I was curious where a lot of you buy your model and accessories from? I've heard of the LHS, Michael's, Hobby Lobby etc... but I wanted to know if there were any "gold mines" out there that people frequent to for their hobby? I'm looking for the best bang for my buck on building my collection of models and paints. I use the 40% off coupons as much as I can, but I didn't know if there was an even better way/place/style! I didn't know if websites offered any type of competitive pricing to the local stores. Any tips, tricks or secrets anyone wants to share!?!!
  5. LOL, I couldn't find their website after the first time I was there! Thanks Mike! The better part if that convention center is 5 minutes from me!!! Thank you so much! As far as the pictures go, I'm currently away from home at the moment but will get some posted as soon as I get back. Need to setup a cheap/quick photo booth to get the light just right on that shine! Thanks again guys!
  6. YEARS ago when the internet was basically AOL and nothing else, my Dad and I setup our first online account. Well they wanted of course the user name, so back then KU basketball was super hot! Well we loved the KU Jayhawks so we wanted to incorporate our user name with them and wanted to be different. So we came up with jayhkr or "Jay-Hak-Er" It's something that has stuck with me for 20 years.
  7. This is me, my wonderful wife and our 2 year old granddaughter this past Christmas.
  8. I would love to see some of his work in person. Heck I would like to have a show just in my area period. Seems like Kansas City gets overlooked on cool things like this. But I will take Donn's advice as best as I can. I've already bought the Future so I'll see how that turns on on my first model and maybe do the spray clear on my second just to compare. I saw a video of a guy who dunked his windshields in it and they came out super sparkly. My windshield has a nice light scratch on it so I'm hoping it'll cover that up a bit. We'll see, this is just my first of hopefully many models to come! Glad I got back into this hobby.
  9. That's my next "investment" I don't spray a lot, but after my first airbrushing I will make it a much MUCH higher priority. After reading all the other posts from you guys on here I'm putting my airbrush compressor search on hold and looking for a good mask now. I was at Home Depot and saw their 3M cartridge mask, but I didn't see the replacement cartridges. Going to check out Lowes tomorrow.
  10. I will be getting some pictures up as soon as I can. Thanks guys for all the feedback! I know we all have our personal preferences so it's hard to hear one thing, one way and another thing on another way. Thanks Again!
  11. Well I have just finished airbrushing my very first model car. I used Donn's techniques and all I can say is WOW! I mean, it might be a gloss black, but I didn't think it would be GLOSS black! I can't wait till it is gassed out and dry for the next step! Which brings me to a few questions: I'm going to give it till Thursday till I do the next step which, if I understood what Donn said correctly, I want to start with 4000 grit sandpaper and sand all the areas up to 12000, correct? Being said about how much pressure should I be using while sanding? The last thing I want to do is jack up this already awesome looking paint job. I know it's impossible to state how heavy/light of pressure, but I was thinking of barely any pressure at all when it comes to this. Also what kind of tips do you guys have for doing raised areas of the hood and the like? I mean if I don't hit every square millimeter with the sand paper is it going to give a horrible uneven appearance? After the sanding is all complete, I want to apply Future polish on it. This is where I will be deviating from Donn's way and doing it my way (this is just cheaper for me in the "future") I would like to apply this via the airbrush and have read that in doing so I may get runs unless I do super light mist coats over a fairly long duration. The length of time it takes to apply does not bother me. It's how long do I wait between mist coats before I add the next? Lastly what is the best way to clean out the airbrush from the Future? Lacquer thinner? I can't wait till I get some pictures posted. There are already a few pics up of the "before Donn's technique" so in a later post I will show the before, during and after (assuming all turns out after the sanding). Anyways thank you guys for what you've taught me so far. It's amazing what these cars can turn out to look like given the right info!
  12. Yeah.... I uhhh.....meant to do that..... Yeah!!!
  13. Then I'm good to go huh? Can't wait to see how this turns out!
  14. Just for the heck of it (and since I already took them) here are those pictures of what I was talking about!
  15. Ahh, ok I didn't know you only used it for pearls and metallics. I'm just shooting straight gloss so I'll probably stick with my standard primer then. Thanks Donn!
  16. I have a Hobby Haven not far from me. But every time I go in there I 1) never get greeted 2) never get asked if they can help me 3) always seem to be overpriced. I don't mind paying a bit more if I get good customer service but I'm not going to pay more than Hobby Lobby AND not get assisted while doing it.
  17. Actually Donn does use a "primer". He uses the Metalizer from Testor's. It's not a traditional primer, but it seems to work!
  18. Hey guys, well I finally got the body of my '59 Vette stripped down and was going to redo it with Donn's techniques. Well I think I got a step mixed up and I sprayed the metalizer on there before I went through the 4000, 8000, and 12,000 grit sanding. I actually did this step AFTER I sprayed the metalizer on. When I did this I thought to myself that this is backwards and sure enough when I re-watched his DVD I was wrong. So my question is this, the plastic now has what looks like "smudges" or faint scratches in them. Should I hit it again with the metalizer or just continue on? First time through Donn's techniques and I knew I would mess up something.
  19. If you have a hand held jig saw you can pretty much make your own. I went to Harbor Freight and bought their $2.00 squeeze clamp, filed down the end so it would fit where the saws usually go in the jig saw and whalla, I paint shaker. I do notice that if I run my full blast for over 15 seconds the bottle comes loose but I always have something under it just in case. It's popped out plenty of times but it doesn't go flying across the room. Plops out like 6" away from me.
  20. Well my vette has been soaking since Tuesday morning and it is still not clean. I think it was the clear coat that I put on. LA's seems to have issues eating through that concrete like stuff. The unclear'd portion of the vette is good, but that isn't much. I've even tried taking a toothbrush to it and it still won't come off. Only if I use my nails will it come off and that would take to long, not to mention give me sore thumbs. So I think in the morning I'll run down and pick up some purple stuff (or run over to $1 store and get some brake fluid) and see what happens then.
  21. +1 on the pliers, or I grab a can of spinach and do what Popeye does!
  22. My Vette has been soaking for about 12 hours and it's just now starting to come off (with no assistance) but it does have a coat of clear on it so it may have to sit longer for the chemical breakdown to occur. If it was just plain paint/primer it would probably be pretty much done, but I've heard that clear coat is like cement sometimes.
  23. Just picked up my Paasche H airbrush and some creatix paint to fiddle with till I am comfortable. This should be fun in the apartment with the loudest air compressor I could find!! (I don't like my upstairs neighbors very much)
  24. Ok, got it exchanged bought a few more things for it, now I just need to play around with it. To bad I've been up since 3am and I'm struggling to even type this up. Tomorrow is a new day and I'm super excited about it. I dunked my '59 Corvette body that I'm currently working on in LA's Totally Awesome so I can redo it. I'll post some pictures of what the paint looked like later, it was worse than horrible. Going to follow Donn's advice that was on his DVD and see what I can do with it now. Only difference is I'm thinking of using Future instead of the spray on clear. Everything else will be done to the letter. Pictures to come!
  25. I had planned on checking the new box before I leave, gas is ridiculous. The set screw idea is a good one, I have to pick up some laquer thinner anyway! I have a quick disconnect on the hose to tank, but not hose to AB. I thought the same thing but I was the one that took the box wrapper off and there was mfg tape sealing the box. I blame "inspector #1200". LOL Thanks again guys!
