Wow Rob...you could be on the leading edge of a whole new fad.

Soon to be removed from the gene pool, assuming the engineering and workmanship in his little rocket are on a par with his grasp of reality, math, and the science that got us to where we are today. I've suggested countless times (literally...so many times, I've lost count) to the flat-Earthers on youboob that all they need to do is walk to the edge and take a selfie. So far, nada. BUT... "Interest in the flat-Earth theory spiked when NBA player Kyrie Irving said in a podcast that he believed the Earth is flat. In September when rapper Bobby Ray Simmons Jr, otherwise known as B.o.B, launched a crowd-funding campaign to send satellites into orbit to determine the Earth’s shape. Also, Tila Tequila has said she thinks the planet is flat. Even UK celebrity Freddie Flintoff has come out in support of the outlandish theory." Celebrities CAN'T be wrong, right?

I'm doing a restoration / upgrade of an early 1/8 scale MPC '70s Harley motorcycle gluebomb that uses identical tires to a recently reissued Honda. The original tires have shrunk a full 1/8 inch in diameter, and have badly melted the rims where the original builder had scraped the chrome away. I wonder if the recent production tires are made from the same stuff...they ARE the same tooling, exactly.

Cutting Rubber Tires Cleanly

NICE drill cradle. I need to make one of those. Good tips too. NOTE: Also consider making the slices in the tread grooves if possible. Easier to hide the joint. -
Nice work on that, and very good points. I've seen more than a few Corvairs, VWs and Porsches killed because the seals weren't maintained. A hot climate and stop-and-go driving is murder on the things

Car Repair Ripoffs 1: Dealerships
Ace-Garageguy replied to Ace-Garageguy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
100% correct. I've been in the car biz, almost every aspect of it, for most of 50 years, and I've seen it all too. The biggest problem now is finding competent people...techs, service writers, and management that knows the difference between hackers and wizards, and who cares enough to hire the best. -
Between rampant incompetence and just plain crookedness (called "up-selling" in the industry), this kind of stuff is everywhere, and the major reason I've refused to work for dealerships since the mid 1970s. AND...in THIS case, even the "good-guy" ex-service rep (around 22 minutes in) demonstrates he has NO CONCEPT OF WHAT A TIMING BELT DOES. It's the ONE service item that NEEDS TO BE DONE ON-TIME as per the owner's manual as catastrophic engine damage (bent valves) can result if it fails, and the car can stop DEAD in traffic...maybe on the interstate in front of a semi. But HE doesn't seem to be aware of this little fact.

BB Chevy Engine Question
Ace-Garageguy replied to Snake45's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Nope. Just me being a butt. Sorry again if I seemed like I was being a butt. It's one of my better-known talents. Both blow-through and suck-through carbureted systems were popular in the '70s. Each style has its own strengths and weaknesses. And it just seems to me like if somebody is going to model one, they may as well make the thing look like it would work in reality. -
BB Chevy Engine Question
Ace-Garageguy replied to Snake45's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
You know...I've just about had it with this forum. All I've ever tried to do was HELP people, try to post FACTUAL information based on EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE, and people want to argue, and then get mad and pissy. -
They ARE voting. How do you imagine that things got to be the way they are? The great majority of what's under the bell-curve is running the show. And you can tell.

BB Chevy Engine Question
Ace-Garageguy replied to Snake45's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That idiot mess is missing more than a couple of pipes. The plumbing that IS there is wrong. The air-box under the carb, if it's a draw-through, should be connected to the inlet side of the compressors where the air filters are (or whatever the hell 53 is supposed to be). The outlets (discharge) of the compressors should be connected to the inlet manifold, SEALED OFF from the air box under the carb. I'll never understand why people want to argue about things they don't know. -
BB Chevy Engine Question
Ace-Garageguy replied to Snake45's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Yeah, I've heard of draw-through. And blow-through. And I've designed and built and tuned them. The thing in the instructions is an idiot mess designed by somebody who doesn't have a clue. -
To build or not to build a collectible kit
Ace-Garageguy replied to 89AKurt's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I THOUGHT I had the kit in question, as I'd once intended to do much the same conversion as the OP has indicated. But I wanted to dig it out and verify a few things before I commented on it. Found it. I now recall why I shelved it after taking the parts out and looking at it several years back. The proportions and lines are SO FAR OFF, the poor thing only vaguely resembles a C111. It's easily as bad as anything Palmer or Premier or Pyro ever made. AND...There are several versions of the C111. The car represented ON the box IS NOT the version IN the box...and it's actually an amalgam of elements from different cars. It will take a LOT of work to make even a passable curbside. A LOT. I seem to recall I paid over $50 for it back then, and it was pretty much a waste of money. The kit has very limited value to an average modeler who wants a reasonably accurate C111 in his collection.- 23 replies

BB Chevy Engine Question
Ace-Garageguy replied to Snake45's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The illustration on the right appears to me to be plumbed incorrectly. The compressor sections appear to have air filters on the inlet side, and the outlet side blows into a box under the carb. If this is actually made the way it appears, it is idiocy. -

BB Chevy Engine Question
Ace-Garageguy replied to Snake45's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Though legions of "experts" will tell you otherwise, old-school Hilborn mechanical injection CAN be made streetable, without losing any high-end punch. It HAS been done. It takes expertise and finesse, and the capability to develop a good part-throttle circuit, but it IS possible...just not for your basic bolt-on yahoo. Hilborn and a magneto...it doesn't get any more "badass" than that. -
Still damm fine music...

Yes, that's where the distributor OR the magneto would go on this particular engine...which represents a 331-354-392 Chrysler, one of the "first-gen" Chrysler hemi engines. The next design Chrysler hemi, the 426, has the distributor in front, and the current Hemi design from Chrysler has no distributor...only coil packs (from the factory, though the engine can be retrofitted with a conventional distributor).
