Mod, Not sure is I can post here or not! but drag related, and a funny car!! Thanks
iBorg Posted March 20, 2015 Posted March 20, 2015 The obvious choice is the Gene Snow car. The chassis is somewhat unique. I'm unaware of any car besides Snow that ran it. You could put a Revell chassis under it which would be more accurate for the Ramchargers or the Color Me Gone, the Chi-Town Hustler or the (I think) the Bob Banning Dodge. The Soapy Sales car also ran a chassis similar to the Revell chassis but I don't know where to point you for decals. The Dodge Fever ran a Logghe chassis like the PL cars. You need to also look to see if the desired car ran a front bumper or not. I've removed and molded in the Jo-Han bumper. It may be difficult depending on the car. If you want to trade complete chassis and tin from a Revell Vega for the Johan kit, including motor, I'm looking for the Jo-han motor and would be interested in that trade. Of course my choice if it was available would be the Diamond Jim Annin car. see: https://www.google.com/search?q=Diamond+Jim+Annin&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=SlkMVeCaEoa0ggSElYCgDQ&ved=0CAgQ_AUoAg&biw=1174&bih=669#imgdii=_&imgrc=9ez3FT4gxj375M%253A%3BTh5pto4rDuWmZM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fimages12.fotki.com%252Fv254%252Fphotos%252F3%252F810003%252F9140104%252FDiamondJimAnnin9-vi.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fpublic.fotki.com%252Fmastermodeler%252F11_reference_pictures%252Fphotos_from_the_web%252Fdrag-cars-by-contri%252Fbob-plumer-photo-co%252Fbobs-funny-car-photos%252Fdiamond-jim-annin-8-jpg.html%3B600%3B394 Mike
vintagedragcrazy Posted March 20, 2015 Posted March 20, 2015 I have a set of the mr norms super challenger decals that slix makes and they look real nice I think they are on page 6 or 7 under funny car decals. Vince
gtx6970 Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 (edited) I have a set of the mr norms super challenger decals that slix makes and they look real nice I think they are on page 6 or 7 under funny car decals. Vince But the chassis designs in the johan kit is all wrong for the MrNorm car Like mentioned .it's right for Gene Snow car. It's pretty close for the Ramchargers 1970 only car,,the 1971 car use the MPC kit And the 1970 dodge fever car is another one pretty close. which I think is 1970 only ( no decals avail that I know of ) I think someone was doing the decals to do the Marv Eldridge car ? Not even close for the . Bob Banning. - The avail decals are for the 72-73 car color me gone .. decals avail are for the 72 car chi town hustler.. -decals are for the 71-72 car, which used the chassis design in the MPC kit, but the Johan body would be more accurate ) FOR THIS CAR or soapy sales cars - decals avail are for the 72-73 car ( Soapy Sales was using a Dave Beebe driven demon bodied car in 70-71 ,aka Pure Hell ) ..for those use the mpc reissue Edited March 21, 2015 by gtx6970

booboo60 Posted March 21, 2015 Author Posted March 21, 2015 What about the jungle jim vega? The 71 ?will that chassis be better to use?
Snake45 Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 Great topic. I have the same kit and have had the same question for years.
gtx6970 Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 What about the jungle jim vega? The 71 ?will that chassis be better to use? Depends a lot on which car your trying to replicate. In a single season most of the cars /chassis designs were very similar ..if not the same. From about 1970 thru 1972 a lot of changes took place.....especially on the big name cars.
OutaFocus Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 Since the original issue of that kit was of the Gene Snow car, it's only natural that the chassis is more correct for that version than the others. For the sake of accuracy, I would build the Snow car.
booboo60 Posted March 21, 2015 Author Posted March 21, 2015 wow,,ok,,I got it,,ima just build the thing,,lol
booboo60 Posted March 21, 2015 Author Posted March 21, 2015 Ok! Im doing the Ramcharger challenger! Like the looks, there are a lot to choose from, shame some one like Revell, or the darn Resin bodys are just so much for what ya get! Then its another 20 or $ 30.00 for a donor kit, i just can't afford it, i bought this Ram Rod kit sealed off Fee bay at 4:ooam in the morning for $23.55 plus 6.75 shipping, i have seen it for like 75 too 100.00 bucks! Heck i just love to build them!, i dont collect or save them, lol, ill rip the celafane off in a second..lol, ill post progress pics, have. Great week all
tim boyd Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 (edited) Just want to reconfirm the earlier posts here...the JoHan kit chassis is correct only for the Gene Snow 1970 Challenger. There was no other Challenger funny car back in the day (at least among ones covered in the magazines) that had a chassis even somewhat similar to this Gene Snow design...it was truly a one-off. What's equally interesting is that the Gene Snow chassis apparently evolved during the year (as did most other funny cars back then). The original version (at least the one I used as the basis for my scratchbuilt replica back then) used a direct-drive setup, whereas the JoHan kit had a Torqueflite tranny. I'm not certain which version came first, but my guess would be the direct drive. Here are some photos of the scratchbuilt (Styrene tubing and sheet) chassis I built back then, about 18 months prior to the debut of the JoHan kit...(note that while I based the chassis design on the Gene Snow Challenger, many other elements of the build differed, including the engine setup shown....) More pictures here Good lluck with this project...the original JoHan kit was among the very best (easily in the top 5) of all early funny car kits from the model manufacturers.....TIM Edited March 21, 2015 by tim boyd
booboo60 Posted March 22, 2015 Author Posted March 22, 2015 Thanks tim! I did find an older jungle jim 71,72 vega funny car chassis, for 4.00 plus 2.25 ship! So 6.25 for a full chassis! Rearend! To frontend! Complete! Less power plant! An front tires! Not to bad! Ill compair and decide! Thanks again for the valued info
