MAGIC MUFFLER Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 (edited) I started this a couple years ago and since becoming a new member, I'm excited to get back on this one. Snodgrass - Andrews - Mahnken originally ran a '48 Fiat Topolino Fuel Altered. They swapped bodies and attached a Mustang body to the Fiat chassis. I scratch built the chassis identical to the Fiat as basically either body goes right on. I've worked pretty hard at getting the stance right to the real car. I have several articles to go by so, hopefully I can get the blue windows in and finish off a few more things soon. Cheers .. and happy to belong to a wild bunch of guys who seem to love old race cars!! I have many in different stages. Edited April 17, 2015 by MAGIC MUFFLER
cobraman Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 A few years ago I bought a altered kit and a resin body to do that very car. After looking for 2 months for the decals I gave up and just built it a no name car.
nitro norman Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 Looks good. I just started on the body of the same car. I have the Hot Rod magazine article on this car, but you can't see much of the chassis. I guess I'll have to use my imagination on the rest of it. Can't decide whether to use a modified Bantam Blast/ Wild Willie chassis or scratch build one. It would be nice if you could share your references on here. The Psycho Mustang is on of my all time favorite drag cars. I just like the way it looks. It was ahead of it's time in that it had that narrow altered chassis ( similar to what was to come in the 70's ) and all the other funnies had the wider Logghe chassis. Again, good job.
Nitrozilla Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 (edited) Welcome to the board Billy. That's a wild ride with or without a body on it. Speaking of which, I think I speak for everyone here when I say, feel free to post pics of the chassis also. I love the Magic Muffler car since I saw it in a recent issue of Elapsed Times magazine. Cool to know that you've done what some of us can only dream of. Impressive resume sir. I've taken a few breaks from the hobby before too. When I came back, these yaahoo's, er, um, fine gentlemen steered me in the right direction and many have become friends. Edited April 18, 2015 by Nitrozilla
nitro norman Posted April 26, 2015 Posted April 26, 2015 Here's a pic I found of the altered version.
MAGIC MUFFLER Posted April 26, 2015 Author Posted April 26, 2015 This has always been my favorite picture of the car : Also, each picture I have of this car, the color is different. It was really difficult to nail down a color that looked right. I'm still not happy with what I put on and might re-spray it. I like the color better in person than in my pictures of the build. Hmmm ….
MAGIC MUFFLER Posted May 31, 2015 Author Posted May 31, 2015 UPDATE > Thought to get a couple pics this morn with the body off. As you can see, still lots to do. I have several projects going at the same time but will try and get on this one some more soon.
magicmustang Posted May 31, 2015 Posted May 31, 2015 Billy, outstanding work. Love the exact detailing and the stance.
10thumbs Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 Hi Billy, This project is looking good, and it looks like it's ready to run. How did it run compared to the Funny Cars? Michael
MAGIC MUFFLER Posted June 2, 2015 Author Posted June 2, 2015 I'm not sure compared to the Funny cars. But, Fuel Altereds were always scary to watch and still are today!!! Thanks for the compliment and will try and get going a little more on this. Need to do some headers and blue windows etc ...
Craig Irwin Posted September 12, 2015 Posted September 12, 2015 Decals by Lucas has the decals. He has a bad rap, I'm leery to order from Lucas. I wish someone else would do them.
madhorseman Posted September 12, 2015 Posted September 12, 2015 Love this car, and You build is Great!!!
Snake45 Posted September 12, 2015 Posted September 12, 2015 Great car, and your work is very nice! I always thought that THIS was the Mustang funny car that the AMT kit's body most resembled--especially around the rear wheel wells.
MAGIC MUFFLER Posted September 13, 2015 Author Posted September 13, 2015 Thanks guys ……. I need to get back on this but been working on the "Chevy 2 Much" Nova lately. Also getting ready to startthe "C&O" Austin Pickup and the "Mazmanian" Football Austin. Too many projects but will try to keep updates when I can.
Rrrrrrumps Posted September 13, 2015 Posted September 13, 2015 Great Build! Man, I love that era of drag racing, when it was truly "Run Whatcha' Brung" and the Genie was let out of the bottle. I was a teen throughout the mid 60's and I remember reading about "Funny Revolution" that was sweeping the nation. I am stuck in the 60's when it comes to building my models...mostly early Funny Cars, to flip tops, just stock body movers. Your depiction of "Psycho" is right on, and hats off to those "knuckle heads" that had the balls to build those wild ass machines. You nailed it, nice work...Run Whatcha Brung...words that resonate even today.
WCD Posted March 19, 2016 Posted March 19, 2016 (edited) Magic Muffler You did a great job on what was once my neighbor's (Mahnken) car when I lived in Azusa. Your historical accounting was correct, the owners got tired of running a fuel car for peanuts so the installation of a Mustang shell earned 4 times the payout. The driver, Larry barker, built that chassis. They ran it until early 1969, whereupon it was sold to an Aussie, sans motor. The Aussie plopped a 392 in it and crashed it on its maiden voyage because of chute failure. The car originally ran 427 Ford wedge, then SOHC heads were installed. The car's two greatest accomplishments were it's winning 1967 Hot Rod Magazine Championships and in early '69, beating Danny Ongais in Mickey Thompson's blue Mach 1 at an OCIR race . Oh, as a Fiat bodied altered, it won the UDRA altered point chase in 1965. In fact it continued to run a few times in local 8 car open AA/FA events too. Again I applaud modeling efforts. nitro norman Posted March 20, 2016 Posted March 20, 2016 He has a bad rap, I'm leery to order from Lucas. I wish someone else would do them. I ordered the decals for this car and for the Brutus GTO from Lucas and got them in about a week and a half. I have not used them yet , so I can't comment on the quality, but they look pretty good. My only complaint is that the gold lettering is just plain gold and not simulated gold leaf .
nitro norman Posted March 20, 2016 Posted March 20, 2016 Here are a few more pics that I got from e-bay.
