Eric Macleod Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 Cool idea of the rear mount for the spare...or will it be spares? Dual rear mount spares would make the car look oh so long and lean! Keep up the postings. One other thought-the kit is a convertible cabriolet. Any thoughts around making it a roadster instead? It would mean a phaeton windshield and a little different work behind the driver's compartment but could be pretty slick!

microwheel Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 Nice Nice Nice Pat, and by the way I love your garage Dio as well. I got to get me one put together someday.
bamadon Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 I love these old classics. I've got a couple un-built I need to start working on.

landman Posted April 29, 2015 Author Posted April 29, 2015 (edited) Going back to Eric's suggestions in post #26, the double spare idea is definitely tempting. As for the roadster conversion, it would definitely require some work. Maybe cutting down the doors to the top of the belt molding and filling in the top depression behind the seat. I do need to make a new windshield frame anyway, as the original is broken. I'm open to ideas here. Don't be shy. Edited January 3, 2021 by landman
landman Posted April 30, 2015 Author Posted April 30, 2015 (edited) Started playing with colors. These may go some way to replicating the gray car. However, they are flat. Still wet in the photo. Is it possible to clearcoat flat to make it glossy? Edited January 3, 2021 by landman
landman Posted April 30, 2015 Author Posted April 30, 2015 (edited) Decided to go ahead and fit the Cadillac hubcaps to the Packard wheels. They are a bit bigger than the Packard hubs but it is too late to backpedal now. Edited January 3, 2021 by landman

sjordan2 Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 Coming along. Do you have more images of the Mercedes 500K?
sjordan2 Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 Thanks. That Johan Mercedes kit is one of the finest and most accurate kits ever produced, especially in the original Gold Cup version.

Eric Macleod Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 In my "for whatever it's worth department" I would suggest a non-metallic gray for a car of this era. To my eye it just never looks right. I love the work you are doing so far. Very high quality job. E-

landman Posted May 11, 2015 Author Posted May 11, 2015 (edited) Let's see how you are coming. I look forward to the next installment. Eric, I was working on the 702 for a while. I hope to get back at it tonight. I'm looking at turning it into a roadster as you suggested. Edited May 11, 2015 by landman
landman Posted May 12, 2015 Author Posted May 12, 2015 (edited) Started on the roadster conversion tonight. I'm planning to use the roof and windshield of the Metal Master Packard I have. Tried it on for size. It is way too narrow and doesn't conform well to the area behind the doors. Looked at filling in the cabriolet roof well. that would make it look even taller. So, instead, I cut down the upper door molding. Looks better this way. Also cut out the rest of the old windshield base which had broken off. Split the roof parts in three and I will add about 1/8" to each side. Edited January 3, 2021 by landman
landman Posted May 12, 2015 Author Posted May 12, 2015 (edited) Decided to go with Eric's idea of twin spares. Drilled a pilot hole in the gas tank apron. Enlarged it to take a 1/8 rod. Attached a 1/8 ID sleeve to the spares and beveled to fit. That will slide over the rod. Should look pretty slick. Edited January 3, 2021 by landman
