dawgvet Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 (edited) I was looking to order bulk wire to make spark plug wires with and was wondering what gauge to order? The M.A.D. distributors are great but I like the satisfaction of drilling out my own. I thinking that I would need an outside diameter of 0.32 mm for regular 8 mm plug wires. I found this company that sells 34 AWG insulated solid core wire for $0.26 per foot in several colors. Their listed O.D. was 0.30 mm. http://www.micronmeters.com/p-196-insulated-wire-34-awg.aspx Do you think this would work well? If you have any other suggestions, let me know. Thanks, Jed Edited May 2, 2015 by dawgvet
Greg Myers Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 (edited) "Wire Wrap" http://hackaday.com/2014/12/18/wire-wrap-101/ Trick is, where to find it. Edited May 2, 2015 by Greg Myers
dawgvet Posted May 2, 2015 Author Posted May 2, 2015 I've seen 'wire wrap' listed on Radio Shack but the smallest I found listed that way was 30 AWG and that is too big for stock ignition wires.
JohnU Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 (edited) You can find wrapping wire on Amazon. A one thousand feet spool of 30 ga. insulated (.019 in. dia.) for less than $8.00 with free shipping! Comes in different colors for custom wiring. I use it and looks good enough (I know, the dreaded "good enough" phrase!) to me. Edited May 2, 2015 by JohnU

landman Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 30AWG refers to the wire, not the casing. Bare 30 gauge is about tight.
southpier Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 detail master ignition wire is .016". bare #30 is .010", so with insulation it's certainly plausible.
DrGlueblob Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 Thanks for the info! Just got a order in at Amazon for a spool of white -Sharpie colors make it any color I need.
Kit Basher Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 Jed, I have been using Detail Master plug wire. It is definitely smaller than 30 ga. insulated wire. I also looked at the 32 and 34 ga. wire from the same source you mentioned. I have not bought any yet, so if you get some before I do, please give us a review. If I get there first, I will let you know.
Mike_G Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 30ga. insulated wire is too big- 32ga. is about right Also, you want solid-core, not stranded
blunc Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 I suggest checking electronics suppliers; Digikey, Mouser and Newark for wire wrap (sometimes listed as wire jumpers also), I feel they will be cheaper than the other alternatives (but I have not made a comparison). I'm fairly certain they will have the best selection of gauges, colors and solid/stranded.

I found some from Pro Tech that is better suited size at .015
