SpreadAxle Posted May 26, 2015 Posted May 26, 2015 (edited) All the builds I'm working on except for one are either restorations of old builds or finishing up projects I started long ago. This is a project I started in 2010 and had to put away a year later. It's pretty far along and since the trailer for it is done, it's time to complete this truck. It's a project I wanted to do for a long time. I had a White Freightliner SD kit and several DD kits. I swapped cabs between the kits and went for quite a few additional details. The daycab will be the focus of this thread. The single axle sleeper tractor will be shown in another thread. The following has been done: Air line details The interior is being detailed with photoetch A Detroit Diesel 6-71 engine has been detailed and will be installed. AITM 2 hole Budd steel wheels are being used. The cab has had the headlights lowered The wind fairing has scratchbuilt supports. Shortened fuel tanks. The frame is an inch shorter. The battery boxes are from the SD kit. Cab color is pactra RC257 Daytona Yellow. It seemed like a close match for the Ryder yellow. Decals are from an original issue amt Mack Cruiseliner kit. Next post will show the trailer. Edited June 21, 2015 by SpreadAxle
SpreadAxle Posted May 26, 2015 Author Posted May 26, 2015 The trailer is AMT's Fruehauf reefer with a few mods. It's a built up I bought off of ebay. I detailed the air system and the reefer unit. Also, I added a side door from a Great Dane dry van kit. The decals come from the original issue of the Ford Louisville Short Hauler kit.
SpreadAxle Posted May 26, 2015 Author Posted May 26, 2015 (edited) Here are a few more pix including a quick mockup. The scratchbuilt lower radiator mount and the narrow metal front bumper are also visible. Edited May 26, 2015 by SpreadAxle
SpreadAxle Posted May 26, 2015 Author Posted May 26, 2015 Thanks Tim. Also, thanks for posting the headlight lowering technique on your site. It really does improve the appearance of the kit's cab.
Jim B Posted May 26, 2015 Posted May 26, 2015 Looking nice, Ray. Headlight lowering technique? I didn't see it on Tim's site. Can you post a link?
SpreadAxle Posted May 26, 2015 Author Posted May 26, 2015 (edited) Jim, the cab, as molded, has the headlights sitting too high. There's a red and yellow Freightliner he built and the text he adds to most of his pix explains it pretty well. It wsn't written as an article, just text in his photos.See if this link works. The text in this pic explains it pretty well. public.fotki.com/mackinac359/freightliner-models/amt-white-freightli/wf-dd-amt-14-jpg.html Edited May 26, 2015 by SpreadAxle
Old Albion Posted May 27, 2015 Posted May 27, 2015 Ray, This is looking great, I will certainly be looking forward to seeing the finished truck.
Petetrucker07 Posted May 28, 2015 Posted May 28, 2015 Looks great so far. I remember the yellow Ryder trucks. Brings back the times I first rode in that ol KW short wheelbase daycab k100 my dad bought. The setup you chose kinda gets me seeing some trucks from the mid/late 80s. Keep up the great work.
gatorincebu Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 Ray, IT looks like you are really getting back into the whole building thing! This one is looking really good. Be Well Gator
SpreadAxle Posted June 1, 2015 Author Posted June 1, 2015 Not much progress to report. I worked on the interior a bit. The quilted upholstery detail was sanded smooth for a more plain appearance. I also threw in a couple of shots to show the grille. It's only a test fit. The grille was part of a photo etch detail set made by Harald Weber. It includes the door handles and window cranks seen in the pic. I'm getting a little further with the frame as well. I'll post more when I can.
Pavel A. Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 Using of PE parts blasts this model to higher level. Great work.
SpreadAxle Posted June 1, 2015 Author Posted June 1, 2015 Thanks. I haven't worked with PE much so I'm still getting the hang of it, but the grille definitely is an improvement.
Jim B Posted June 2, 2015 Posted June 2, 2015 The P/E grill really is an improvement. I remember Harold; he was a member over at the Yahoo! Group for a while. Made a P/E set for the Ford C-Series, too. Wonder whatever happened to him?
SpreadAxle Posted June 2, 2015 Author Posted June 2, 2015 I'm not sure what happened to him, Jim. His work is good and I wonder if he's still around. This grille requires folding and soldering to get it into shape but the cool thing is that he sent my grille already done.
SpreadAxle Posted June 15, 2015 Author Posted June 15, 2015 (edited) I've made a little progress on this one. Engine and wheels are mounted. I decided to use the shortened bumper I made from the kit bumper and save the metal one for another project. Some of the old narrow front bumpers from Freightliner had rounded ends, so I did that with my bumper. Edited June 15, 2015 by SpreadAxle
