Hi, I picked up a 57 chevy model the other day and I decided if im going to do i want to do it right. I ordered a eclipse cs airbrush and a tc20t compressor. I had to go to hobby lobby and get the starter paashe airbrush since it is going to take a month for the cs to get here since i order on amazon and they didnt say it was comming from japan. But I also picked up testors aztek pearl red. I was wondering do I need primer? if so would rattle can krylon primer work. I also see alot of people use future as clear so after searching around town and no one had any. I read pledge floor finisher with the blue boots on it was the same as future and I cant find it also. This is the only one I can find is this the same as future?

I would personally not use a clear as a primer - the color actually is helpful in seeing where you need more work sanding, etc. You could easily get a can of Model Master Lacquer Primer and not spend more than $5. If you already have the Krylon, I would suggest trying it on a plastic spoon before using it on your kit. If there is any crazing or any other damage, you'll know not to use it on your kit.

I don't know where your at, but get some decent primer, duplicolor, plasticote, tamiya. Is the testors brand acrylic?

I've been using Krylon primer under all sorts of paint for years with no issues. As for Future, that Pledge is the right stuff, but their are better alternatives. Testors Wet Look clear would be my choice.

+1 on all that. Also, the Walmart house brand primer (about $1 a can) is actually excellent stuff--cheap, thin, smooth, covers well, dries fast, stands up to almost any kind of paint you want to throw on it. What's not to like?

Thanks for the fast replies, I wasnt planning on using the clear as a primer. It was for going over the pearl red. I was wondering if you guys could recommend a nice mid-darker candy blue that can be used with airbrush. Im alittle disappointed in how pinkish the pearl red is. but it will work for my first car.

Chad Mike made mention of the plastic spoon for you . A great tool for checking paint combo's and primer reaction. you can write on the spoon or number them and keep a detailed note of the layers of paint and brand you used. (Note this is not my idea I am just passing it along.)

I've used that Aztec paint a few times. It actually sticks to bare plastic pretty good, but you should scuff the plastic with some 800 or 1000 grit wet/dry sandpaper. After its sprayed, you can 'set it' with a warm blowdryer. I used about 18 psi on the compressor, and thin coats. It doesn't like to be sprayed on too thick. It will dry to a satin finish, so don't get wrapped up in trying to get a good gloss coat. It needs clear.

Spaz Stix makes a Candy Blue in a 2oz bottle for airbrushing (I looked it up on Amazon, and they still have it. However, it looks like this company is in limbo - in the process of partnering with HRP - that may be why the "official webstore" has so few candys available right now).
