landman
I had started a planning thread here: http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=103048#entry1452310Contrary to what I sais above I decided to go tandem. It'll look somewhat like the one in Chuck's post #5 in the planning thread.Off to a bad start. I started off splicing a section of frame rail between the front and rear halves of the dodge then I remembered that wouldn't work for a tandem. DUH!!!!! So I took it apart and cobbled a frame that should fit under the cab/crane/deck.http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=103048#entry1452310
landman
Off to a bad start with the posting too. the second attachment should have been this: Edited December 21, 2020 by landman

landman
I think it might have looked funny, single drive on a long wheelbase like that. It will give it some "heft".
gatorincebu
Pat, Interesting project you have here. I like the idea of the tandem. yes it was a light to medium duty tractor/truck.however like you said. I am sure someone somewhere did a tandem axle truck. I whole heartedly agree with that theory. Not sure about the Hiab crane though. I think I like the one in the Italeri parts pack better. it is a bit smaller I believe, and also of earlier year. As for the single drive long wheelbase /long bed. Maybe in the States. But if you go other places they really stretch the capacity of their vehicles. Like here in the Philippines. Some really long drop side and wing vans on single and tandem axles..And trust me when I say. They load em heavy!!! So I say go for it!! landman
Taking aboutbad starts. I thought I'd paint this right away since the "FTB corporate blue" takes a long time to dry. I got a few wrinkles and a less than smooth , almost sandpapery finish. To strip or not to strip. I think I'll let it harden and try to sand it. I'd like to put something with a little more Oomph into it. This looks like it might fit. That opens up a can of worms about the transmission. I think what is on the V10 is a six speed with likely two overdrives. Then there is the five speed on the 361.However it drove through a two speed rear end which won't be there in the tandem arrangement. I realize that whoever will see the truck on the shelf couldn't care less but what would be the most plausible combination? This is the layout more or less. I'll have to check whether the gas tanks will be in the way of the outriggers. I already know the battery box doesn't fit any more between the front spring hanger and the tank. gatorincebu
Looking good thus far! You could always move things back under the flat bed , battery box, fuel tank Hyd tank etc?? :-) How do you like that KFS Hiab crane kit? I have been thinking about getting one or two of them. landman
Gator, that crane is beautiful. Very detailed. The rams are aluminum tubes, the castings are nice and crisp, the PE is fantastic. It will be a bit challenging to build but should be a good one.I remembered comments on here about ill fitting doors. So I got at them before it is too late. Wow! They're quite the chore all right.Still waiting for opinions about the transmission, and the engine too maybe.
gatorincebu
Pat, I am not trucker. So I know squat about trannies. But I would say go with what you want. Very few people if any will see it anyway! But If you can replicate a two or three speed rear. then go with the five speed. Your call Bro. OR just fake it all the way??? lol Be Well Gator
landman
I've been looking for a complete tandem drive assembly. The only one I found is AITM's Hendrickson setup. The other vendors seems to have only bits. Any suggestions?

landman
After an epic battle with the passenger door, I needed something to calm my nerves. I dry fitted the L-700 single drive in a couple of different locations to see. I think it may not look so bad after all. I think I favor the rearmost setup. GrumpyGrowly
Pat, you've got a good start and I favor the rear setup too. This is a fun model, I just finished one, I found the Coca-Cola version on amazon for $20, did not make it that way. I did find the doors to be difficult but in time I got them in and working. I too was underwhelmed by the engine provided, so I applaud the use of the V10. I am following your build, I have pics of process if you need them but looks to me like what you got going is awesome. GrumpyGrowly
A theme is good, I try to stick to a logging/ lumber mill theme. landman
Started assembling the base and outriggers of the crane to get locations for gas tank, battery box, etc. Edited December 21, 2020 by landman
landman
Made up the U-bolts for the mounting blocks. Positioned the base on the frame to make sure there will be a spot for everything without interference. Right behind the front springs' rear mount looks like it will work. Added the swing cylinders. Tried out my new PE scissors. They are more than worth the expense. Installed the outrigger locking levers. Installed the valve block & lever banks after drilling for the hoses. Started on the outriggers. This kit is very detailed and an absolute delight to build. Edited December 21, 2020 by landman
