TLes Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 Looking good Geoff, I love it when someone builds something "new". Whether it's a different model or a standard one built with imagination.
GeeBee Posted August 7, 2019 Author Posted August 7, 2019 Can't believe it's been over there years this one has been sitting on the backburner, having a tidy and rearrange in the hobby room, found this one stored in various plastic tubs, tried a dry fit and things didn't want to go together, the ribbed floor I'd made was slightly too long, it needed about 3mm trimmed off it, then the side panels I'd scratch built needed sanding slightly so they could line up with the interior, but now everything fits just fine, just got to do a little airbrushing, engine, gearbox and front suspension and it was all go together permanently.
dublin boy Posted August 7, 2019 Posted August 7, 2019 If you need the spare parts soon Geoff, I can post them, I won't be over until sometime next month.
Tom Geiger Posted August 7, 2019 Posted August 7, 2019 Great work! Geoff messaged me earlier inquiring about the status of mine. I'm stuck at about that same percentage of completion! I know my issues were the van side panels. I had painted the kit provided glass and someone told me that the glass frame was incorrect. So I have to go back and cut plastic stock side panels. Second stumble is the mount for the rear hatch on mine. One body mounted latch is busted, I have to figure a work around. Geoff, let's see you drive this one over the finish line!
TarheelRick Posted August 7, 2019 Posted August 7, 2019 Really enjoy watching builds of vehicles I am not familiar with. The name is familiar, but all the variations are intriguing. Love what you are doing with this one. May not be correct, but when I look at that body, all I can see is a blown or injected SBC and a set of slicks poking through the rear fenders. Please forgive me for that, but this would make one wicked Gasser.

Geoff, let's see you drive this one over the finish line! I found out just after i started this one that the side panels are stamped like the van, then cut out to fit the Windows to make the Universal (Estate) they are in real life made of steel as they are part of the skeletal bodyshell

I will modify mine to match. You do know about the spare tire, right?

GeeBee Posted August 14, 2019 Author Posted August 14, 2019 (edited) As I'm waiting for the paint on the Chevelle to harden so I can wet sand a few dust nibs out of it, I've made a little more progress on the Trabant, engine was airbrushed in Testors steel, other parts were airbrushed in various shades of grey, rear suspension was airbrushed in satin black with the fixing points picked out in Tamiya Titanium silver Edited August 15, 2019 by GeeBee
GeeBee Posted August 18, 2019 Author Posted August 18, 2019 Started to apply the aluminium trim on top of the wings and door, in real life it's actually an aluminium U channel that hides the screws and rivets that hold the panels on, I used aluminium BMF,
GeeBee Posted August 25, 2019 Author Posted August 25, 2019 Engine compartment finished, just the towbar to fit onto the chassis, although the Instructions say to fit it before the exhaust goes on, it will actually fit afterwards.
thatz4u Posted August 25, 2019 Posted August 25, 2019 looks good from over here, hope you finish it soon....?
Kemszi Posted August 25, 2019 Posted August 25, 2019 Trabant, good to see this here In Hungary it'is an iconic car Nice build!

GeeBee Posted August 26, 2019 Author Posted August 26, 2019 Body and chassis dry fitted together, just waiting for some slow setting epoxy to arrive so I can finally get them fitted together permanently, starting to do the headlamp reflectors in aluminium Bare metal foil
GeeBee Posted August 27, 2019 Author Posted August 27, 2019 (edited) A little more progress this morning before i had to head off to work Edited August 27, 2019 by GeeBee
GeeBee Posted August 29, 2019 Author Posted August 29, 2019 Thankfully the epoxy glue arrived this morning, so first thing I did once I got home was to glue the Trabbi together, I think the Devcon will be strong enough
Dann Tier Posted August 30, 2019 Posted August 30, 2019 Its great to see this one again...looking Brilliant!!!

Cheers Dann, can wait to get this one finished, the epoxy glue set up and thankfully all four wheels touch the ground at the same time, got the headlamp lenses fixed in using UV resin
GeeBee Posted September 2, 2019 Author Posted September 2, 2019 Nearing the finish line, because of the difference between the kit wheel arches and the few photos I've got of the 1:1, it wasn't possible to fit the spare wheel on top of wheel arch, so it will go as close to it as I can get, a spare wheel mount was scratch built from a square of styrene sheet and a few modified parts from the spares box.
GeeBee Posted September 2, 2019 Author Posted September 2, 2019 (edited) Rubber trim on the one side done, using a chisel edge permanent art marker, pretty hard to see under the bright light, it's the first permanent marker I've found that hasn't got a purple tinge to it when dried. Edited September 2, 2019 by GeeBee
GeeBee Posted September 2, 2019 Author Posted September 2, 2019 Masking tape removed, just the other side to do now
