Jantrix Posted August 10, 2015 Posted August 10, 2015 (edited) I picked up the Monogram '56 Chevy yesterday at a swap meet and it has the option of using this odd little twin turbo set up. I believe it's also available in the Monogram Rampage Camaro kit. What real life 1:1 engine application is this based on? I've never seen anything like it. The forced air from the turbos is ported below the carb? Seems kinda funky to me, but I like funky. Any help would be appreciated. Edited December 11, 2016 by Jantrix
Exotics_Builder Posted August 10, 2015 Posted August 10, 2015 Those were on some Monogram kits in the late 80's or early 90's. I would have to dig around a bit to find more info. You need to adapt to make correct. AMT also did a funky turbo setup, along with webers, on some of their 80's Camaro kits.
Ace-Garageguy Posted August 10, 2015 Posted August 10, 2015 (edited) If I'm seeing everything in the photo correctly, this really wouldn't work at all in reality. Turbo/carb setups can be either suck-through or blow-through. Suck-through would have the carbs upstream of the turbines like this (sorta), but the output of the compressor side of the turbos (which would include fuel that was introduced by the carb(s) would have to be ducted back into the intake manifold, which would also have to be sealed from the carb. A carb bolted to an airbox, floating in space over what looks like an ordinary 4bbl manifold makes no sense whatsoever.A blow-through installation normally has the carb(s) in a sealed box downstream of the turbos, but upstream of the manifold, and the turbo-compressor outputs blow nothing but air into the box, through the carb(s) (where fuel is introduced) and into the manifold. Jantrix Posted August 10, 2015 Author Posted August 10, 2015 That's kinda what I thought. I'll work it out. Thanks again.
Muncie Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 looks like something based on the Accel Turbo-sonic kit with some pieces missing. Accel used a divided plenum box under the carb - the top part directed fuel /air from the carb to the turbo and the bottom part took turbocharged air/fuel into the manifold. Don't remember how it worked but the plenum divider would open and close to go from normally aspirated to turbocharged. They were around for a couple of years when aftermarket turbochrger kits were being figured out in the late 70's - haven't heard much about them since... might be a reason for that
Jantrix Posted December 11, 2016 Author Posted December 11, 2016 So I think I've found a way to make use of this crazy fictional 2xturbo set up. This is a draw through turbo set up and could be done pretty easily with the upturned exhaust manifolds in the Monogram kit.
Jantrix Posted December 11, 2016 Author Posted December 11, 2016 (edited) OR! Here's another possibility. This one is even easier to modify. From a Pantera. These would just require some tubing changes and a plenum modification. Edited December 11, 2016 by Jantrix
astroracer Posted December 11, 2016 Posted December 11, 2016 Accel Turbo-Sonic on a '70 Monte. This is the single turbo kit rather then the dual but it does get the point across.
