aurfalien Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 (edited) On the radio I've been hearing about a large trade show taking place soon called 3D Print Show California.Seems huge and being pushed heavily;http://3dprintshow.com/The list of vendors is impressive and rather large. my66s55 Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 When you educate yourself enough and learn what is the reality in what is really happening in the advancement of 3d printing, you will be able to decide what is real and what is b.s. This show to me is B. S. simply by the exhibitors listed.

This show to me is B. S. simply by the exhibitors listed. Can you elaborate on that for those of us that don't know exactly everything that's happening?
my66s55 Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 (edited) The big name that stands out is Stratasys. They are the legal copyright holders of fdm trade name and developers of fdm printing technology. On careful examination of the others exhibitors, many are linked to the filament printing 3d printing tech. One of the exceptions is Autodesk which has to do with design and manipulation of 3d files. To get a full exhibit, one should be drawn to the newer technology of the Maker Fares. These are large exhibits held in cities worldwide and present the latest and greatest offered in today's 3d printing world. There a number of desktop 3d printers available that will do what we, as modelers require. Check out this Solus sla dlp printer soon to be released. http://www.buildyourownsla.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=2146&start=20. read pages 3 and 4. Remember, this is only one example. Stay away from fdm filament printers unless you have a LARGE print body like 1:12 and are prepared to do a lot of finish work to make it presentable. I can do some jaw dropping 1:25 and smaller prints on my machine, but the Solus is your glimpse into what my be on your desk to in the future. Edited August 18, 2015 by my66s55

I thought others on the list might find it intersting and want to attend. It's in San Diego which is a very cool place to visit anyways. It would be interesting however to see what Adobe and Autodesk have to offer. Edited August 18, 2015 by aurfalien
my66s55 Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 Condescension? I don't think so. My strong opinion of the lack of real knowledge of 3d printing on this forum is more like it. I am doing my best to try to show members on this forum exactly what it takes to do what they may envision and the real progress in 3d printing. Adobe and Autodesk? Cad software with a pretty good price. Google them. Tells you all about them. You can even get on the Adobe cloud. Ask Harry what a great deal that is. The only thing Autodesk has different to offer is that it has the ability to hollow out a cad file if you don't care to print it solid. I downloaded a trial version and fount it totally in unsatisfactory for what I wanted. Netfabb will do the same thing plus find and fix errors in your file. Netfabb has a free version which helps find errors. Blender cad type software also has tools to help find errors in your files and its free and very well supported. If you can't find an an existing error in a file, you can sent it to Netfabb's cloud and they will fix it free.
aurfalien Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 (edited) I can appreciate strong opinions as I am guility of them too. But one attracts bees with honey. But I've been to hundreds of trade shows due to requirements of my proffession. And I've both seen things and spoken to venders at these varios shows about warez that are not mentioned on there site.As for Google, that info is only as good as how well its been indexed or its ability to even be indexed and how many pages you drill into. Most ppl rarely go past the 2nd page of there search results. But the show, at least based on commercials I've heard seems to be geared towards the "in general" small busness owner in helping them realize products faster. It may or may not be granular or evolved enough for scale modeling. For example, architecting a community and instead of having to build a scale model ot it, print it complete with trees, bidegs etc... Stuff like that I think its tailerd for. But the show could be surprising. You know there could be a indy skunk works type of vendor there who rented a small booth that could be tailered to scale models. And they are not mentioned on the site.I've seen many of those at trade shows too. Edited August 18, 2015 by aurfalien
my66s55 Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 (edited) Nice try, a Dale Carnegie quote. I'm not interested in winning friends and influencing people, just informing the members on this forum of b.s. This show, to me, is backed by Stratasys who is trying to milk every dime they can from their fdm technology. I am a 70 yr old small business accountant who has had my own practice here in Florida for the last 25 years. I am well educated and totally aware of the influence and development of the open source community on desktop 3d printing since early 2010. For the vast majority, if not all the members of this forum, this show is a waste of time and money. that is,f there is an fee to enter. Like it or not, you made the post. I'm only informing from my knowledge. Edited August 18, 2015 by my66s55
Quick GMC Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 I didn't take his post as condescending. I appreciate straight forward information, especially when it reveals something like a bias in the presented technology at a trade show like suggested here. If that's true, it's pretty shady and deliberately preventing people from being exposed to newer, more efficient technology. I don't know anything about 3D printing other than what i can order from Shapeways right now, and the basics.

Well, trade shows, especialy in small burgeoning industries are usually biased and backed by 1 or 2 sponsers at first. To me 3D printing falls in to this although ts been around fpr a long time, a job I was CTO at in the mid 90s had 1 for use in VFX in creating scale miniatures of beasts etc...For example, Siggraph, a trade show about VFX was backed by then SGI. And so it showed off mostly SGI warez and was biased, this was circa early 90's. Fast forward today, it has no dominant player and the VFX industry has high visablity, its diverse with many players and tech.My point, keep an open mind as it's just a trade show for some seeminly cool stuff, you may find a gold or silver needle in the hay stack over there, no need to make it a conspiracy etc...And there are usually fees to get in, convention centers aren't cheap.

Get a clue. That trade show is a waste of time. Fact's are fact's. Nothing you can say will change that. STOP TRYING TO MISLEAD MEMBERS OF THIS FORUM. Nothing you can say will change that. b-body fan Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 Hey Daddyfink , A.C. Norton and I have been trying to contact you. I think your box is full or disabled. Sorry to post here, but have been trying for a couple days now. Thanks, Mike.
my66s55 Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 I'm going to take a moment here to interject my own personal experiences with 3d printing. I own both an fdm and sla dlp printer. I have taught myself to be able to create 3d printable files. I have 2 w.i.p currently active posts on this forum. I have extensive experience in what can and can't be achieved with each style printer. I am very familiar with many of the different styles of cad software. In essence, been there , done that. I don't talk out of my hat. I accumulated years of experience in this process. When I say something, it's because I know it from experience. By the way, I built both of my printers. It's not rocket science. Many people around the world are doing the same with great success.
aurfalien Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 (edited) Doh my bad, thought it was the SD Convention Center but it's at an equally cool Pasadena Convention Center.Pasadena is awesome as well. Edited August 18, 2015 by aurfalien
