JTRACING Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 my neighbor gave me some old tools after her husband passed away, so I’ve been restoring them in my spare time. this is a Woden #4 Plane made in England early 1960's it was in really rough shape but I got it looking pretty sharp! and sharp enough to shave with
BigTallDad Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 Very nice work; it doesn't look over 50 years old.On the down side, now you've raised the bar and I'll probably start working on my old planes.
Kit Basher Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 But you've completely destroyed its value as a collectible! Just kidding! It looks great. Having restored a few to "not pretty but fully functional" condition, l have a good idea how much work you put into it. That is some major rust removal. Did you replate the cap iron or just clean and polish it? Either way, nice job. Now go make some shavings!
JTRACING Posted August 27, 2015 Author Posted August 27, 2015 thanks guy!s, I just polished everything out, only expense i have in it was the 10$ for the bottle of evapo-rust
angelo7 Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 Great job! I saw many of those growing up. My father was a cabinet maker and there were all sizes of those in his shop. By the way, I have an old rusted hand saw and I been planning in "restoring" it for a while.
Ace-Garageguy Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 I dearly love old tools, and have a lot of positive feelings towards people who save and restore them to as-new, useful condition. Brilliant.
bobthehobbyguy Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 Nice work. Nice work breathing life back in a beautiful uld plane.
Kit Basher Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 thanks guy!s, I just polished everything out, only expense i have in it was the 10$ for the bottle of evapo-rustWhat is evapo-rust and how does it work?
JTRACING Posted August 27, 2015 Author Posted August 27, 2015 What is evapo-rust and how does it work?http://reviews.canadiantire.ca/9045/0477902P/no-evapo-rust-rust-remover-reviews/reviews.htm you just soak stuff in it and the rust disappears, non toxic you can stick your hands in it, pretty safe stuff and a good product. You still need to polish stuff out after to remove as much of the black carbon left from the rust though.
Kit Basher Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 Re: evapo-rust- Sounds pretty cool, and I found some local places that have it. Thanks!
Snake45 Posted August 29, 2015 Posted August 29, 2015 Wow, very nice! Reminds of some old gun restorations/rebuilds I've seen. You do nice work!
Roadrunner Posted September 9, 2015 Posted September 9, 2015 My dad had one that was similar, possibly the same thing, and you could plane wood so thin, you could almost see through it. I still remember the smell of him planing some cedar boards that he was using for something or another.
