Geno Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 I've heard this model was based off of the Bonneville tooling which would make this car look all wrong. Any truth to that? I would have though it might be based off the Grand Prix tooling. I want to build one but not if it's incorrect. Thanks, Geno.
ChrisBcritter Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 (edited) Yep - based off the Bonneville. It would be possible to fix via shortening the body's wheelbase and trunk, using the Grand Prix chassis (someone had a build posted here not too long ago) but it would be a bit of a job. And as long as you've got the knives out, there's the window opening on the driver's side... Edited August 30, 2015 by ChrisBcritter
Geno Posted August 30, 2015 Author Posted August 30, 2015 Man, that sucks. You'd think they would have been smart enough to build it off the Grand Prix tool. Thanks for the info. It's greatly appreciated.
Snake45 Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 Before dismissing the kit out of hand, you might want to read this thread:
Eshaver Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 I built my own off that POS kit . Of course that means sectioning the body at the trunk and moving it forward about an eigth of an inch . The chassis has to be sliced an diced ahear of the rear axle . A M T was a TOTAL embarrasment as Racing Champions . I have seen GREED before , but these guys capitalized even on that notion !
unclescott58 Posted September 1, 2015 Posted September 1, 2015 Looking wrong? True to scale it is wrong. But a 3 inch difference in wheelbase? (And what ever in overall length?) The kit of the car looks okay to me. If I didn't know the kit was based on AMT's old '65 Bonneville kit I'm not sure I would have known anything was wrong with the kit. When I was kid, I'm doubt that I knew there was a difference wheelbase and length of full-size Pontiac models. I would have thought trim and features were the only difference. Even a Canadian Pontiac Laurentian would not have looked that different in size to US Bonneville to me, at the time. So it comes down to how picky one wants to be. If it bothers you and doesn't look right, don't buy or build it. Or modify it to make it look right.
Geno Posted September 2, 2015 Author Posted September 2, 2015 I might pick one up just to check it out. If I don't like it I know my grandson will take it. Thanks all for the insight.
Bob Ellis Posted September 2, 2015 Posted September 2, 2015 As good or bad it is, it's a starting point to a '65 Pontiac. I wonder if the Bonneville details are ruined?
Eshaver Posted September 3, 2015 Posted September 3, 2015 Nothing a decent tool an die maker couldn't re engrave . Besides, it may have used moveable inserts in the body tool too
Junkman Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 You'd think they would have been smart enough...Hahahaha, good one!
