Superpeterbilt Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 Is good to see it with that cab on it. Its taking shape to be a unique truck.
disabled modeler Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 Love the rain cap...very cool...! And people wonder why I like the old school trucks.
landman Posted November 10, 2015 Author Posted November 10, 2015 (edited) Did some studyin'. Found out a few issues, mostly not too serious. Frontier's cab support blocks (under the interior) are a bit high but I sort of like it like that. It is a bit higher than in the photos I have but I won't play with them unless absolutely necessary. And...it has to clear the engine which extends under the cab. One thing I didn't bargain for is the setback front axle. I think I can remedy that by moving the power sterring boxes back and shortening the links and cutting off the front of the frame. This shows how low the 12 sits in the cracker box application. It has to sit that low here too. Right now the frame rail flanges don't clear the manifolds. Making the engine fit will be the biggest challenge. Edited January 16, 2021 by landman
redneckrigger Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 Don't we all !! That is why I love the Model Forums. I have learned a lot over the years ! My only problem now . Is remembering it all . lol Suffering from a severe case of C.R.S. . Be Well GatorI fully agree with Gator.............. but I can't even remember what CRS stands for! LOL! All kidding aside, I also wish this forum existed years ago, and that I had found it earlier. Excellence inspires excellence, (or at least ATTEMPTS at it!). There is so much skill present here, that it boggles the mind. I can only aspire to be somewhere around 5% as skilled as those on this forum! Cheers, Tom
landman Posted November 10, 2015 Author Posted November 10, 2015 (edited) I attacked the engine first. The manifolds didn't clear the frame enough for it to reach the desired level. So I took the exhaust system off & trimmed about 1/16 from each runner. Now it drops right in. I also trimmed the oil pan a bit. That has to be done first since it may dictate whether I have to move the front axle or not. So far, so good. Edited January 16, 2021 by landman
gatorincebu Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 Pat, You have this one looking really good. And seem to be moving right along. I like your rain cap ! Be Well Gator
Tesla Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 Excellent progress...it's looking real nice Pat.
landman Posted November 11, 2015 Author Posted November 11, 2015 (edited) Since I had to remove the upper flanges of the frame, I made new ones on the outside. Relocated the steering boxes and shortened the links. Rerouted the exhaust pipes again to bring them to one stack on the passenger side. After much testing and checking this is where the engine will sit. I can now build rear engine supports. Edited January 16, 2021 by landman
gatorincebu Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 Pat, That motor is looking really good between the frame rails! Be Well Gator
landman Posted November 13, 2015 Author Posted November 13, 2015 (edited) Completed the engine supports, attached the main transmission to the engine & put them in the frame. Started on a support for the auxiliary transmission. The cross member is made from the cab support of the Paystar. Edited January 16, 2021 by landman
landman Posted November 13, 2015 Author Posted November 13, 2015 (edited) Made another hanger for the other end of the transmission. Fabricated supports so the rad goes level with the fan. Made up some rad hoses. They are smallish, but that can be fixed. The drivetrain in place. Tahe auxiliary loo.ks pretty far back. Any closer there wouldn't have been u-joints. landman Posted November 15, 2015 Author Posted November 15, 2015 (edited) Thanks Gino. Added the tanks, battery box . I have to design & build a roller & ramp at the rear (not sure how to call this). Cab & the rest of the resin is bathing. Edited January 16, 2021 by landman
Arnd Posted November 15, 2015 Posted November 15, 2015 hey patfirst off all you are doing an amaizing work on this. all the details make this model very realistic and unique. kepp on that grate work.so longArnd
landman Posted November 15, 2015 Author Posted November 15, 2015 (edited) Here's a comparison between the resin cab and the real thing. Two major differences, The resin cab appears to be wider , look at the space between the headlight pods and the grille. Not much I can do about that. The resin cab's grille insert is arched at the top while the real thing is straight. That can be remedied. Edited January 16, 2021 by landman
Petetrucker07 Posted November 15, 2015 Posted November 15, 2015 And the real thing is taller, maybe it's being nattower makin it appear taller than the resin piece. I'm sure get this straightened out and lookin right. Very nice work so far.

I'm sure get this straightened out and lookin right. Very nice work so far. It is both narrower and taller. Count the bars in the grille. The real one has one extra bar. And the extra width in the resin cab is between the headlights and the rad opening and in the same area of the hood butterflies. I suppose someone with guts & skill could section the cab along it lenght but at the price of this cab I'm not about to attempt that. Edited January 16, 2021 by landman
Petetrucker07 Posted November 15, 2015 Posted November 15, 2015 I don't blame ya. My next project is snapper body. I'm leary of cuttin it length wise.
DRIPTROIT 71 Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 I have admired your work, and I believe that if I had your skills that I would make a new taller grill from scratch, that might give it a more proportionate look, and then if I was satisfied with it, swap them out. If I couldn't make one that I was satisfied with, the only harm would be the loss of time. Just my two cents, but this one is going to be an awesome build either way. I'm looking forward to seeing more!
landman Posted November 16, 2015 Author Posted November 16, 2015 Thanks for the good words Brian. I've been thinking about various ways of going about this. I may be able to modify this one.
landman Posted November 17, 2015 Author Posted November 17, 2015 (edited) Worked on the fifth wheel ramps. Is that the right name for them? A door catch that has lost its magnet might provide good ends for the rear frame roller. Which led to one of those Oops! moments when I went to try on the fenders. Which was corrected by a notch. Then I put everything on to check clearances, fit etc. This give a fair preview. Edited January 17, 2021 by landman
