Sixties Sam Posted November 25, 2015 Posted November 25, 2015 Hey guys, I got this 38 GMC resin cab from ebay, and decided to make a car hauler using it. It's going to be curbside, no engine or chassis details. Frame is 3/8" x 1/4" balsa sticks with thin plywood tabs for the axles to go through. The bed is sheet styrene with 1/16" half round edging. Wheels & tires are a set of big rig wheels from Moebius. Rear fenders are made from the lid of a can of Testors clear paint. It's shaping up, but there's more to do. I'm considering making the bed tilt, pivoting on the rear axle, so you can use very short ramps for loading. I plan to use it as sort of a rolling diorama, displaying my newest models on it. Comments and suggestions welcome.
vintagercr Posted November 26, 2015 Posted November 26, 2015 Sam, that is going to look cool when finished.
wayne swayze Posted November 26, 2015 Posted November 26, 2015 Love cab overs from the '30s and '40s! Something just flat out cool about them. Great idea to make it into a hauler!

RAT-T Posted November 26, 2015 Posted November 26, 2015 THAT LOOKS COOL, WOULD YOU REMEMBER THE SELLERS NAME, OR WHO CAST IT?
Sixties Sam Posted November 26, 2015 Author Posted November 26, 2015 Tom, the cab is by Jimmy Flintstone, sold by a user named stiffkitty. It was only $11.99.Sam
misterNNL Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 Looks like a great project.I love the look of your workbench too, reminds me of mine,10 square feet with an actual working area smaller than a sheet of paper!
DumpyDan Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 Really nice, I have one of these cabs. Will be watching to see what you do next
Sixties Sam Posted November 28, 2015 Author Posted November 28, 2015 I made a set of loading ramps from styrene and aluminum mesh.
GrumpyGrowly Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 Thank for explaining the make of the haul bed. I need to make one for a Ford I'm working on. I like yours a lot. Great work!
Sixties Sam Posted December 2, 2015 Author Posted December 2, 2015 Update: I got some paint on it today. It needs some cleanup. Holes in front fenders are for 39 Ford headlights.
fractalign Posted December 2, 2015 Posted December 2, 2015 That looks very cool and not far from completion either. Can't wait to see it finished.
DumpyDan Posted December 20, 2015 Posted December 20, 2015 This looks nice in paint, if you go to the NNL East I hope you bring it.
kilrathy10 Posted December 20, 2015 Posted December 20, 2015 That frame out of wood is a great idea.....Love this idea....
