I'm taking a short break from my long term projects to knock out a quick build for Christmas. I found this 1964 1/2 Mustang kit on clearance at Michael's for less that 10 bucks, and since my wife's sister and her husband have this car, I thought it would make a fun gift for Christmas.

Here's the kit.

Here are some pictures of the actual car:

This is not going to be a super-detailed build, but I'm just going to do it as clean as I can. The only things I'll be adding is a new pre-wired distributor and maybe some battery cables, and a Pro Tech air cleaner to match the real car.

I started with some painting. Got the Semi-Gloss black parts painted.

The real car has overspray on the bottom of the chassis, so I gave this chassis the same treatment. Here are a few pics of the real underside.I think I'm going to lay some more body paint down on the chassis and will for sure be weathering it.

The kit comes with markings on the decal sheet for some of the emblems, but not the hood, do I decided to try the BMF under the paint trick. Seemed to work OK.

The real car was just repainted with the factory Poppy Red color, so I ordered that color from Scalefinishes.com. I got the color on, but it needs a clear coat, which will go on soon.

Thanks for looking!

When I reunited with my daughter and the GrandBratz 6 years ago, for their first Christmas I got 3 snap kits. It took a Herculean effort, but I knocked them all out in a month.

It's a joy making a one-of-a-kind gift for friends and family. They remember it forever.

To heck with being a great modeler Art. You're a better human.

Hi Art. I pretty sure that I have seen your name or read your name in few model magazines. Anyway, I just wanted to say your mustang is looking great. My great aunt bought a 64 1/2 convertible new in Los Angeles and had it for almost 30 years. Always garaged and well taken care of. I will definitely be following this one and Thanks Art.       Jeff

Thanks for looking, Jeff! I have been fortunate to get in the mags a few times. That's always a neat experience. Too bad you couldn't get your hands on your aunt's car today! Sounds like a cherry. My sister-in-law has had this car about 5 years and it's in pretty decent shape. With the new paint it got about two years ago, it's really looking good now.

Thanks for looking, Marcos. I'm sure yours is going to be sweet. Any pics up yet?

Sorry my friend, it's for an article in the mag so I can't share the WIP here until it comes out.

Is the engine in the real car also red?

To my surprise, it is. When I started the model, I asked my father-in-law what color the engine was, and he thought it was blue, so I painted it Ford Engine blue first. Then a couple of weeks ago I snuck in a few pics under the hood while at my sister-in-law's house and it turns out it's red, so it went in the pond. I knew previously that it had been rebuilt at some point and wasn't factory painted anymore,

Thanks for looking, Jesse.

Well, it makes it more interesting!

Very nicely done Art. That engine originally probably was all black except for the valve covers and air cleaner. They would have been painted gold or red depending on the engine size if memory serves.

Yes, a re-build for sure. By the way, Ford Corporate Blue for blocks didn't come in until 1966. The block would have originally been black with blue or gold valve covers depending on the engine options. Red was used on the valve covers and air cleaners of other engines over the years (the 260 in my Ranchero, for example).

I managed to get this one done just in time for Christmas. It was a struggle to meet the timeline, so I didn't stop to take too many pictures! But here are a few I managed to squeeze in.

The kit only had one of the mirrors of the type that thazt the real car had, and it ended up going down my drain when I attempted to wash it, so I scratched out two of them.

Added a MAD pre-wired distributor and scratch-built a coil (not pictured).
