horsepower Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 (edited) For future builds of these trucks the front subframe from the AMT '70-1/2 Camaro works fantastic with very little work and the Camaro/Nova subframe is the choice of many of the 1:1 builders, also you can clean up the rear of the chassis by removing the spare tire carrier and making a fuel tank from sheet plastic to go in the area, and make it narrow enough for the exhaust pipes to exit alongside it to.the rear of the truck. lghtngyello03 Posted February 19, 2016 Author Posted February 19, 2016 Looking Good !Man oh MAN!! I'm loving this badboy!! Can't wait to see it finished!Mate, that is absolutely gorgeous!! the colour, the stance, the whole package!!Thanks guys! Getting there. I'm probably going to do a little changes on some stuff, like move the battery off of the firewall and smooth it up. So off to the purple pond it shall go.
lghtngyello03 Posted February 19, 2016 Author Posted February 19, 2016 just scribe around the floor until it drops out then either saw a narrow band off the bottom edges of the tub, or make a mark on how much it nneeds to drop down then use a sanding block and coarse paper or a belt sander to shorten the tub, then just drop the floor back in and glue it in place, then if you have to shorten the bottom mounting surface of the seats if they are to tall. But if they aren't to tall sitting on the '55 floor pan then they shouldn't need to be cut for the SSR interior. Thanks for the ideas. I'll keep them in mind for a future build. That's beautiful, love your paint job, it's going to be killer, the only thin I might have done was to move the battery off the firewall and smooth the firewall up.a.tad, to be totally trick put a Coke cooler in the bed and run the battery cables out of.it to look.like.a stealth battery box., or rob the one out of the New Revell.model A, since it's hidden after you build the roadster anyway. Can't wait to the rest of the build. Thanks for the idea... I didn't totally like the battery on the firewall. So You've talked me into it. I'm going to hack off the battery mounts and send the firewall into the purple pond since nothing is glued together yet, just a dry fit. I was also thinking about mounting the battery to the underside of the truck on the frame rail. For future builds of these trucks the front subframe from the AMT '70-1/2 Camaro works fantastic with very little work and the Camaro/Nova subframe is the choice of many of the 1:1 builders, also you can clean up the rear of the chassis by removing the spare tire carrier and making a fuel tank from sheet plastic to go in the area, and make it narrow enough for the exhaust pipes to exit alongside it to.the rear of the truck.I knew this in the 1:1 aspect...this is my first build that isn't box stock. I feel that swapping front subframes is a little out of my comfort zone or skill level at the moment. I will definitely try this on a future build. I also wanted to ditch the spare tire carrier, and build a nice sheet metal tank out of some styrene, but again, out of my comfort zone for the moment. Thanks for all the tips, I'll definitely be using them on a future build. Thinking about doing a 57 Cameo, or maybe just another 55.
horsepower Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 Make sure you post pictures, your builds are clean and very nice looking, on the next one, you might c o consider going to a hood that opens from the back then tilts forward, look at some of the 1:1 truck magazines for ideas, or do a search for building hood hinges on models on You Tube, there's a couple that aren't that bad to do,I wish I had pictures or had kept the one that I took a pie cut from the hood of just a little more than 1/16" at the front, to nothing about a 1/4" from the back and sloped the hood down, barely enough to notice but really makes the front look different.
lghtngyello03 Posted February 24, 2016 Author Posted February 24, 2016 (edited) Here's a little update. Got the window gaskets painted, the dash detailed, the engine cover painted but still have to detail the letters, the air box/intake tube fitted correctly, and radiator hoses fitted. Also got the bed assembled and the BMF on the bed trim. Last truck build for a while, lol that bed was a PITA to put together. Pay no attention to the battery on the firewall....since this pic I have cut the box off and am in the process of shaving the firewall and repainting it. Edited February 24, 2016 by lghtngyello03

lghtngyello03 Posted February 25, 2016 Author Posted February 25, 2016 (edited) I thoroughly agree! yuup looks stunning ! Nice looking truck Scott, yer doing a fine job! Its looking good nice work on the window gaskets and the foiling...Thanks a lot guys! I'm taking a little break from this one as it has tried my patients over the last couple of days. Doesn't like too much more to be finished, just have to get some more clear orange and mica silver paint to redo the firewall and hood. Then paint all my chrome parts with alclad. carl63_99 Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 WOW! It's been a while since I checked in on this and your work/progress is amazing. I LOVE that color and the bed just kills it! As someone who has judged contests many, many times, something I see that they are going to catch is the mold lines on the sides of the seats. Fixing that would put you from 99% to an ace.
gtx6970 Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 Love everything about it, color, stance, wheels , etc etc etc

Are you talking about the lines at the tops of the head rests? If so, those aren't mold lines, they are supposed to be aluminum or body color hoops. Kind of like a hoop behind the seat of an SLK 230. I haven't BMF'd them yet, I actually forgot, lol. So that will be in order before I put this project on hold, lol. Here is a pic of some actual SSR seats for reference. Speedfreak Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 I feel your frustration Scott, I know it well. At some point you just have to say, " It's going together just the way it stands now. The level of quality in this build at present is outstanding.
horsepower Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 Looking better everything you do with it. Thought I might let you know, that tank idea we were discussing for the spare tire area, one of the tanks from the passenger cars from Chevy during the tri five years work great, you can use it as is or file the ribs away to make it look like a fabricated tank, then either alclad it, or bare foil it for the final touch.Keep it going, we're waiting with bated breath.
CelticModeler Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 Just wondering what exactly was done to the wondows during mock up. Im new to model building and dont notice the changes. Bought this set and plan on doing a similar build. Truck looks sick btw

Bought this set and plan on doing a similar build. Truck looks sick btwthanks man! The window openings on the sides are incorrect. The front of them are angled and should be flat. I removed my vent windows anyways, so all I did was sand down the front of the window openings until they were flat.
lghtngyello03 Posted January 8, 2020 Author Posted January 8, 2020 (edited) Well, I didn’t realize it has been this long since I put this one on the back burner lol. I just finished a super detailed Skyline build and wanted to try to finish this one up before an upcoming show on the 18th. There’s not much left to be finished. I had to build a smooth firewall and I have to repaint the hood and engine cover, as well as make a floor pan. But here is a quick fit of everything as it sits now. lghtngyello03 Posted January 8, 2020 Author Posted January 8, 2020 Update, lol. I got the hood, smooth firewall, floor pan, and engine cover sprayed in mica silver and then sprayed the clear orange over them this evening. I haven’t sprayed this color in 2 years..but I think it matches pretty closely. Tomorrow I hope to be able to start gluing body parts into the chassis. Then it will be almost done!
Belugawrx Posted January 8, 2020 Posted January 8, 2020 NICE !! Looks like you kept the right colour recipe for sure ! This is gonna look GREAT
