snacktruck67 Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 Nice to have you a board. I am just to the south of you, in Columbia, SC. So welcome neighbor.
disabled modeler Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 Welcome Stan....! I know what you mean about having time to pass...LOL... I also remember those early days prices of kits and the kits that were out back then...man those were the days.
retired & glad Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 Welcome Stan. I am in Morganton, NC. I know about the extra time now. Been retired for a number of years and started back to playing ( Hacking) golf and have been building models for years. Went to Radio control back in the 60's and did that for years and years. Now, there aren't many fields to fly at and plastic models have taken over the days of casual living. Back in the 80's I was given some Nascar kits that I still have unbuilt and this last year I have completed 8 models. Still have the Nascar kits but no desire to work on them since I don't follow the race circuit anymore.Hope your days of building is as much fun as I have had.
bubbaman Posted January 9, 2016 Author Posted January 9, 2016 me just the oppisite - i`d like to build nascar stuff especially the # 18 [ KYLE BUSCH ] - if anyone ever see`s this car [ model ] please let me know - also love the big rigs so that`s in my future - made a promise to myself that EVERY DAY i will complete a part of the CHARGER even if it`s not in my daily plan - than someday`s i`ll probably spend good time on it - gonna also get more info on air brushing - don`t think it`s really nessasary but i still wanna see - well it`s sat. and kinda gloomy out side so fishin dosen`t look good and don`t feel like goin to the range on a sat. so i`ll probably work on the CHARGER you`ll have a good weekend - oh yea football later
retired & glad Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 (edited) I think the only reason I don't build the Nascar kits is because they change colors and styles of paint at every race and no way could I keep up with the changes. One of the nascar kits I have is Davey Allison and I don't think I would ever part with or build it. In those days he and Dale Earnhardt Sr. was the ones I would cheer for and follow. Happy building. Also air brushing is very good. I don't brush much except on some interior things that I don't want to set up and clean the airbrushes.Take your time on airbrushing and practice, practice and practice some more until you are comfy with the system. mikemodeler Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 Welcome Stan, I am in Charlotte and am temporarily out of work so I have been trying to get some stuff finished that has been on the workbench a while. Be sure to use the Hobby Lobby coupon, it is a real saver. You can only use one per visit, so plan accordingly. Also check their clearance section, many times they have models there already marked down.If you are up for a drive, there is a great swap meet in Salisbury next month, check the show section here for details. It has a lot of models for sale, old and new, and it's a great way to find some kits at great prices! Not sure that there are many hobby shops out your way, you may also want to check out some online vendors for stuff not carried at Hobby Lobby. Have fun!
DRIPTROIT 71 Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 Welcome to the forum Stan, from someone else from North Carolina,
TomZ Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 Howdy, Stan! I'm just west of Winston-Salem, myself. Retiring in a couple of months and looking forward to a lot more modeling activity. Tom
DumpyDan Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Welcome, like Elvin says 40% OFFCOUPON and I don't even live in the USA
Grumpa Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 Welcome aboard Stan! This is a great group to belong to. There's a group over here in Kernersville, the "Carolina Kustom Modelers" - CKM for short. That sponsors a great 'NNL" show in August in Clemmons NC. Usually around the third week-end. You may want to make a trip over. You're only about two hours away. It's a great time to see some great builds. The show will usually draw modelers from all over the South, and there are a great bunch of dealers with parts, kits, you name it. Hope to see you there!
bubbaman Posted January 15, 2016 Author Posted January 15, 2016 definitely would like to go to a show been to many gun show`s all over so distance is no problem - can you get deals on whole models ?? and all the stuff that goes with building i`d like to check out
Drgon63 Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 welcome Stan. Hendersonville NC just south west of Asheville. Look fwd to seeing some of your builds. Tom
Grumpa Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 definitely would like to go to a show been to many gun show`s all over so distance is no problem - can you get deals on whole models ?? and all the stuff that goes with building i`d like to check outYes....you can find just about any kit that you are looking for. From the new releases. to some of the "vintage kits" that you remember at $2.99 (albeit a little more expensive nowadays!), and at very good prices. But more importantly, you will find people like Tom Valenta (Drgon63). I'm sure that Tom won't remember me, but his tips on paint, and painting set me on a whole new course, and Tom is an awesome builder. Check out his Fotki link. In fact over the last five years of my attending this show, I haven't found one person who wouldn't spend a few minutes on explaining how they did this, or that. As with this show, you will find the same to be true with the folks on this Forum. There is also a great show in Roanoke, VA the first week-end in march. This is the 'MDA" car show, and there is a model contest attached to the car show. Your entry fee into the car show covers you on entering a model into the contest. Google 2016 MDA car show for further info. This also has an enormous amount of kit and parts dealers in attendance. So come up, see some great 1:1 cars, and models.
