Crazy Ed Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 Often times I've read where someone was at a Contest/Show where if only they knew that someone they had seen, or a Kit they saw was built by <pick the alias> they woulda said Hi or sought that person out. Maybe it's time to do something that was common back in the CB "Break" days. We wore those 1x4" or so laminated engraved "name tags" with our Handle and Club affiliations or in some cases.......... ID's we'd use on channels that the FCC didn't consider, ummmm Legal. Anyhow the point is maybe it's time to make known just who you are at shows and remove the "Gee I wish I woulda known it was You" days later when everyone is back at their Keyboards. Heck you could even fill out your entry cards with aka's after your name proceeded by the Forum's initials you use it on saying you change it from forum to forum.. Just thinkin' out load. Seems to me I've read way to often 'bout "Ships Crossing in th Night" and this'd go a ways to maybe starting many new Friendships.
crazyjim Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 All my builds display a Vietnam Service Ribbon and I usually wear a neon green FAST shirt to shows. I'm pretty easy to spot.
Jantrix Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 That's not a bad idea. I'll start adding my online moniker to my entry forms.
Petetrucker07 Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 I agree totally. I'll add my "handle" and maybe start making a cool name tag to wear when I'm gonna hang out at a show.
Danno Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 At the upcoming DESERT SCALE CLASSIC, we're going to have nametags with forum usernames ("handles") available for anyone who wants them. It's a good idea.
Tom Geiger Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 At NNL East we have peel and stick name tags if people choose to use them. They are on the registration table. We also have a line on the model tag where you can put your cell phone number, so someone in the building can call you to find you. We had too many instances of people not finding each other or meeting each other at the show because there are so many people there! So if you see a model you like and you want to meet the builder, his name and phone number are right on the model.
espo Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 On one hand this is not a bad idea if you are looking for one another. On the other hand I was under the impression that the reason for not having any builder recognition on the display info was to keep the judging impartial. Maybe a board where you could post your presence at the show and contact information like a cell phone number. Then you could see if someone is present or not.

An NNL event doesn't have formal judging so the builder's name is already displayed with the model. So no problem to add the cell phone if they wish. And the funny thing is that even when I go to a contest, I recognize half the models from the message boards so I know who built them. It's getting to the point when I see a model I can often figure out who built it just by the style.
Danno Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 Judging will be fair and impartial . . . or it won't . . . regardless of whether a builder's name is displayed. If the builder's name influences the judging, there is no impartiality or ethics involved in the judging. Besides, as Tom says, most people (other than first-timers or infrequent attendees) can recognize a builder's style whether his name is affixed to the entry or not. Hiding or identifying the builder doesn't seem to really be a factor, IMHO, if the judging has integrity in the first place.
