Quick GMC Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 I have been going back and forth with myself for years about what to do with my truck. I have a 2006 GMC Sierra 1500. I build a tranny for it, it's got a shift kit, high stall converter, headers, custom tune, etc. I have a camshaft on the bench I never installed and I'm afraid to tear the motor down over a weekend without a backup vehicle. I am at 95,000 miles right now and there are a lot more to go IMO. I am looking at about $3k in repairs in front suspension and miscellaneous work, but other than that this thing has never had a problem. I need a truck for work and I was going to get a new, nice loaded truck. After thinking about it, I need a truck for work, but why buy a brand new truck and risk it getting damaged when loading it for work and putting a ton of miles on it driving to trade shows etc. I am somewhat attached to my truck since I bought it brand new and have put a lot of hours into it myself, including removing and stalling the tranny 3 times in one day. I have been through hell and back, but every time the work was done correctly, this thing has been solid. I always wanted to build a motor for, just a solid N/A 6.0 iron block as a sleeper that would run in the 12's with a traction kit. But as I continue to use it, the interior is getting worn more an more, little by little I see new dings and scratches.I hav a lot of medical debt from when my son was born. We have insurance, but he was sick and we have been racking up CC debt for the last couple years. We are started to take big chunks out of it now and I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. So my plan for this year is to get rid of 80% of our debt, get my business CC paid down, make sure the truck is repaired properly and buy a new Mustang by the end of the year. August will be the 10th year of owning my truck and I think that is a reasonable amount of time to own a vehicle before splurging a little. We aren't having any more kids, so it's just the 3 of us, the car seat will fit and my wife has a Ford Edge for the road trips. Not sure if it's going to happen. Even though I am giddy at the thought of getting this car, getting rid of debt is my priority this year. Last year was my first year on my own with our new business. It was part time before and stepping away from the family company, and going full time grossed us 70% increase in revenue, which I hope to replicate this year, at a minimum. If anyone has one of these, I would like to hear about your experience. I want it with the GT Package, black with black wheels. I really want a Ford Focus RS, but I am too big to enjoy them comfortably. it is the exact same price as the Mustang I built online.
Maindrian Pace Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 It sounds like a great plan. I would wait until the debt is paid down to a level that you both feel comfortable with before taking on the new car payment, but it sounds like that's what the plan is anyway. Just don't be in a hurry, wait for everything to fall into place and it will happen when the time is right.
tim boyd Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 Cameron...I have a '16 Mustang GT Premium with the six speed manual...it's the convertible version. It's quite a leap beyond the S197-based Mustangs...both in terms of technology/content but also in terms of the feel and drive of the car. I look at it as the Mustang GT having finally made the leap all the way into sports car territory.I think you'd be very pleased with your choice. I also think you are exactly right to pay down the remaining CC balances before making your move...Good Luck with your plan! Cheers....TIM (full disclosure...I'm a retired Ford lifer so I may not be the most independent thinker on this subject(!)
Harry P. Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 I really, really wanted a new '15 Mustang. Just absolutely love the looks of that car. I planned on trading in my '07 GT... I was especially looking forward to the new IRS... light years ahead of my Mustang's "horse drawn wagon" era solid axle and leaf springs. But unfortunately some unexpected medical issues came up, and made quick work of my "Mustang money." So my dream of a new Mustang will have to wait... maybe another year or so... but I will have that new Mustang! PS to Tim: Thanks for your help.
Quick GMC Posted February 2, 2016 Author Posted February 2, 2016 Thanks Tim. I'm glad to hear that it is a significant difference in feel over the previous model. I don't want to go drive one just yet, but closer to Summer I will start going to the dealers. I am hoping to time it right to get a little better price once they start getting the next year models in.
Badluck 13 Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 solid axle and leaf springs. Leaf springs?!?!?!?? ....Harry you musta got one of those "Super Retro Package" s197's...... As far as the "new" '15 up Mustangs go ...we see veeeeeeery little problems with the car here at the dealership which is somewhat unusual when a new design is released, the customers who had purchased the '15 up loves them compared to the s197's ....a real good friend of mine has both a '06 and '15 and he loves both and says that there is great qualities on both but what he finds impressive is the fact his '15 is quicker than his '06 GT and the '15 is a 4 banger....I personally don't see getting rid of my '08 for new Mustang, from the windshield back I love the car,its just I cannot get past the front end,but that's just my opinion.....Cameron just hang in there and reach for your goal as I too went through financial hard times but I did finally get my 'stang.....I am hoping for ya!!!
Dave Van Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 My son just bought this candy apple red Mustang 4 cyl turbo about two months ago. He loves it......way too fast of a car for him....but he pays the bill so what do you do??? The sort time he's had it it's been perfect....but at the price they should be good cars!! That's his Civic si he traded for the mustang. I'll keep my 66 Mustang 2+2 289 4 spd thx
JTalmage Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 As much as I like sitting in the new mustangs (probably the most comfortable Mustang I've ever sat in) I still prefer my ragged old foxbody mustangs. I've had a few of them come and go but right now I have a '94 Mustang GT, and an '88 Mustang LX hatchback... slowly becoming a street/strip car. And of course my weak little 2.3 automatic leaf spring '77 Mustang II.. which was was my first car. The fox platform wasnt much for comfort and quality but they sure are fun. That, and you can pretty much swap any suspension/drivetrain and most interior parts from an '04 Mustang to a '79 Mustang. They're like legos!
chadrob30 Posted April 5, 2016 Posted April 5, 2016 You guys should check out A Faster Horse: Mustang on Netflix. It documents the new (then) Mustang from drawings and clay to the finished product, with lots of in-house footage.
Mike Chernecki Posted April 5, 2016 Posted April 5, 2016 I am a diehard chevy fan and was never a Mustang fan. Back in 2012 I was in Tampa for a week and rented 2012 Mustang Convertible. I have wanted one ever since, just can't afford one.. some day. What bugs me is in town there is a girl under 20 who owns a 2013 Boss 302 and another guy again under 20 with 2013 Shelby GT500. Must have a rich daddy.
Mustang Madness Posted April 6, 2016 Posted April 6, 2016 I hope it works out for you Quick GMC... if it's meant to happen it will. I'd like to add a recent model to my "stable" in a couple years....
Quick GMC Posted April 6, 2016 Author Posted April 6, 2016 I have actually changed my mind. I am 95% sure I will be going with the Challenger. A little more money up front, but in the end, less expensive than it would be to make the Mustang the way I want it. More room for the family. Chances of me actually doing track days and finding the handling limits of either car are slim to none, realistically. As it sits right now, the plan is that this will be my next car. Depending on where I am at financially, I may or may not be able to afford the Shaker version, but it will be a Scat Pack with the 392 SRT motor. Non Shaker Shaker version (another $5k) Considering white too
crazyjim Posted April 6, 2016 Posted April 6, 2016 Needs to have SHINY wheels on the white with shaker hood.
chadrob30 Posted April 7, 2016 Posted April 7, 2016 I like the look of the Shaker, but it seems it sits too far forward to me.
