Greenpoint is located at the Northern end of Brooklyn, bordered by Bushwick to the southeast, Williamsburg to the south and Long Island City in Queens, across Newtown Creek, to the north. The area is colloquially known as BushPointBurg, theme park for urban exploring, street cred seeking hipsters playcationing in NYC. Red Hook and Park Slope are located in what used to be called South Brooklyn. I like both nabes. Carroll Gardens was part of Red Hook until gentrifiers and real estate brokers decided to come up with a contrived name (Red Hook was considered a run down, post-industrial slum. What do they know?) to cash in. The Hook and The Slope are adjacent to each other. Red Hook is about 7 miles from me on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. The Slope is about eight. Depending on traffic, which can turn the BQE into a six lane parking lot during AM/PM rush hours, it's a 20 minute drive.

Polish Soul Food

Not many reasons to go to Detroilet anymore , Paczki is one . Dogs are not allowed in Hamtramck because they pee on the poles.....;)

You guys are killin' me with all those Polish foods!  I'm starving! Anybody ever had kabanosy?

The original not so Slim Jim. Throw in some Pumpernickel bread, Kosciusko Mustard and a bottle of Zywiec beer to wash it down and you're set, Peteski.

Just had a box of Paczki at the apartment last week.  They were cream cheese filled.  I can still feel my arteries hardening.  :)

Yeah, but worth ever bite, right?

Roy, you can add "FAT" to the other six days. Eating Polish "health food" means only two slabs of rye bread slathered with smalec (lard spread) while chowing down on some flacki (tripe) or a bowl of schav with sour cream and crumbled hard boiled eggs. Truly the gateway to hardened arteries. :)

Really? I'm Hispanic, Mexican actually. And in our cuisine we have tripe soup, or MENUDO.

Ah, okay.

When Rob first moved down to NYC- he went to Williamsburg- I know. I loaded my late, lamented Caprice to bear and drove him down from Providence.

I'll keep that in mind. Next time I head that way and can plan a bit of urban exploring, I'll be in touch. I'm assuming it's accessible by subway or bus? When I get to Rob's place, my car usually stays parked.

Roj-o on that, Charles. Nearly everyplace in the city (except Staten Island. They're still stuck in 1975) is accessible by bus or subway. Subway's faster; but, the bus gives you a better opportunity to take in the sights in all their grimy glory . :)

Roy, I also eat my share of mondongo, lengua, pernil and cuchifritos. :)

That's exactly the place I was referring to Christopher!! But be careful, referring to the folks from either of Detroit's "captive cities" as a "Detroiter" doesn't usually go over to well these days!

It's surprising that there are any Polish stores of any type still exist in Hamtramck. Almost 90% of the Poles beat feet out of town. Are those pączki certified halal?

Good one Joe!! I can definitely see your point, but I'm sure that once the more Americanized generation of the family took over they are halal, kosher, or whatever they need to say they are to sell them!
