cobraman Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 (edited) I bought this kit just something different to do. When I started it I felt just putting it on the plastic stand would be lame. So....... I decided it needed to be part of a small diorama. Here then are photos of the start of it. No pics yet of the space ship as it is drying in the garage. I started with a base from Hobby Lobby and it was too large so I cut it in half. I then stained and cleared it. Next I mixed up some Celuclay and applied it to the base as the ground work. It has been given a base coat of dark brown. It will be dry brushed with a lighter color and them some grass and rocks will be added. I also made a wall from balsa wood for the back but forgot to take a pic of it. It was made from some thick balsa and then covered with spackling and painted. The tree stumps were carved from more balsa wood and then painted. Edited February 6, 2016 by cobraman updated and done
cobraman Posted February 4, 2016 Author Posted February 4, 2016 Thanks birthday boy. I was just in need of a break from cars and trucks for awhile.
cobraman Posted February 4, 2016 Author Posted February 4, 2016 The base is pretty much done so I did a quick mock up. I had to take some liberties as this was Land of the Giants but was restricted as to how big the surroundings could be by the size of the base.
Ace-Garageguy Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Pretty cool little display base there, sir. Now the ship itself makes me think of an articulated Gundam or Transformers-style giant cyborg turtle.
cobraman Posted February 5, 2016 Author Posted February 5, 2016 Thanks Bill. It does kind of resemble a turtle now that you mention it. : )
Roadrunner Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Thanks Bill. It does kind of resemble a turtle now that you mention it. : )Reminds me of a horseshoe crab.
cobraman Posted February 5, 2016 Author Posted February 5, 2016 So it looks like anything but a space ship ? : )
unclescott58 Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Turned out very nice Ray. Curious, does this model include any of the interior of the craft? I can not remember if the original Aurora one had an interior or not? It seems like I remember one?
cobraman Posted February 5, 2016 Author Posted February 5, 2016 Thanks men. There is no scale indicated on the box but it is pretty small, only about 7 inches or so. As for the interior the original did not have one. This version does have one from a different company. It is just punch out card stock that is better than nothing I guess but you can't really see inside anyway. I did install it nevertheless. Having a bit of trouble with the decals right now .
cobraman Posted February 6, 2016 Author Posted February 6, 2016 Got this one finished a bit ago. It was a fun little project.
wayne swayze Posted February 6, 2016 Posted February 6, 2016 Cool ! A bubble top from outer space ! Nice change of pace for you Ray.
cobraman Posted February 6, 2016 Author Posted February 6, 2016 Thanks Wayne. More "different" kinds of stuff coming.
DumpyDan Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 Nice landing, didn't even hit any stumps. Looks good nice detailing on the base
