Igor Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 (edited) I've wanted to build a new model for a while, but I have been having trouble deciding just which one of the dozens I have on the shelf. So I have decided to just start with the engine, and figure out what to put it in later... Hemi left over from the '68 Dart I built a couple years ago. I actually started this a couple weeks ago, but haven't been making much progress. I'm hoping that posting it here will motivate me to finish it before NNL East. Edited April 15, 2016 by Igor
Misha Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 Now I've never thought to approach a builder's block this way Igor, yet it's a great idea to begin with an engine and then build around it! Your HEMI looks good and is a perfect choice, for it could go a number of ways, a Mopar, drag or rod, or nearly any vehicle. Wishing you well on your project, keeping an eye on it.Cheers Misha
Belugawrx Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 Hey Igor,...That is how I start most of my builds, as well. I like to concentrate on the engine, detailing, and so on.Sometimes, just building the engine will break a slump !Carry on
Igor Posted March 23, 2016 Author Posted March 23, 2016 Installed the air filters, distributor, coil, alternator, belts, and fan, and routed the plug wires. And with that, I believe the Hemi is finished. I'm waiting to install the headers until I decide what it is going into. (Actually, I have pretty much decided what I'm going to build, but I'm saving that for the next update. :-) )
Lizard Racing Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 Great detailing! This engine would look good in about anything.
Misha Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 Nice work Jeff on wiring and plumbing your Hemi. Alternator is attached to the block avoiding the dreaded floating one. The paint work turned out very well. I would offer a suggestion to make your plug wires lay more naturally, especially the driver's side where they are looping up into the air, apart from that it looks terrific!Quite interested in seeing what you'll wrap, around it. The style suggests an S/Stock class racer???Cheers Misha
Igor Posted March 23, 2016 Author Posted March 23, 2016 Misha: Yeah, I'll bend them down more while I'm handling it prior to installation. ;-)
Igor Posted March 27, 2016 Author Posted March 27, 2016 (edited) So, here's what I decided I'm going to drop the Hemi into. I want to try and get started on it in the next day or two. Edited March 27, 2016 by Igor
Tom Geiger Posted March 27, 2016 Posted March 27, 2016 Nice Hemi Jeff! As you are trying to finish a model for NNL East, maybe an NNL East sponsored car? If you'd like a set of these decals, we'd be pleased to send them to ya! And that goes for anyone else, we still have plenty! One to a customer please! Send your name and address to nnleast@aol.com
Igor Posted March 29, 2016 Author Posted March 29, 2016 Tom: I think I've got one of those lying around somewhere... You were giving them out at last year's show, right? Interesting idea. I was going to go "Street Machine", but maybe I'll try to think up some way to use at least a couple of them.
GTJUNIOR Posted April 5, 2016 Posted April 5, 2016 Oh great! My work table just collapsed! :-[Too many unfinished projects? lol. Can't be a pretty sight, hopefully no serious damage done.
Igor Posted April 6, 2016 Author Posted April 6, 2016 Actually, it was caused by a single receipt I had just put on it! One piece of paper too much! Luckily, nothing broke. And I didn't have a lot of parts on it at the time, so nothing was lost (that I know of, yet). It was not the most structurally sound table. So it was a mess that took a while to clean up, and then I had to go get the other TV table out of the basement and set everything back up. But this one is in (slightly) better shape, so hopefully it won't be a problem again.
Igor Posted April 6, 2016 Author Posted April 6, 2016 (edited) Body has been primed and interior painted. Quick mock up. Edited April 6, 2016 by Igor
Misha Posted April 7, 2016 Posted April 7, 2016 Happy B-Day Igor! Maybe you'll get a new bench today.Cheers Misha
Igor Posted April 9, 2016 Author Posted April 9, 2016 I managed to finally get some color sprayed on the body. This is an experiment for me. Ever since I started working at the craft store whose name begins with "M", I have been fascinated by the variety of colors in the acrylic craft paint aisle. The paint (bottle shown in photo) was thinned with alcohol, and sprayed through my airbrush. Color is actually a little more copper-looking than in the photo. I'm happy with the results, but it does dry kind of flat, so I'm thinking a coat of Future is up next.
Igor Posted April 13, 2016 Author Posted April 13, 2016 Time is running out before the NNLEast, but luckily I'm off work until then. I still want to get it finished before then, so, hopefully, updates will be coming rapidly. Interior is painted and flocked, hope to have it finished before the end of the day.
crazyrichard Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 nice color and it seems to cover very well .. so with FUTURE you ment put some gloss clear over it ?? or ?
Igor Posted April 13, 2016 Author Posted April 13, 2016 Yes, clear acrylic. The floor finish formerly known as "Future", I believe mine is actually "Pledge with Future shine" (same thing).
Igor Posted April 13, 2016 Author Posted April 13, 2016 (edited) Interior assembled. I might go back over the steering wheel with another color, I'm not happy with it. Edited April 13, 2016 by Igor Forgot shifter
Igor Posted April 13, 2016 Author Posted April 13, 2016 Sprayed a coat of Future on the body. Looking better. May put one more coat on for good measure. Photo still doesn't show the color well.
Igor Posted April 13, 2016 Author Posted April 13, 2016 Just realized that I forgot the shift lever. Tried to edit the above post, but apparently it is not going through.
mrm Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 Looking good. I always wondered about those colors. My wife is into scrapbooking, so I spend quite some time with her in those stores - both HL and M. I have looked at them time and time again. Do you think they would take 2K clears well? There a re some really nice metallics and other colors and they are inexpensive, but I aways worried about the clear. This is what has stopped me from trying them so far.
