Harry P. Posted March 17, 2016 Author Posted March 17, 2016 Eastwood is IMHO a good, competent, workmanlike director, but I find his style to be a bit...what...unimaginative? Everything's so straightforward, not much subtlety or nuance.I think I know what you're saying, and of course we all have different tastes. For me, I like a good story. Not a fan of action/adventure/sci-fi kind of stuff, so movies like Star Wars and "action films" with a lot of car chases and explosions just don't interest me... so even though they may we very well done for what they are, the directors who do them don't really register on my radar. But with Clint Eastwood, yes, his style is pretty much a straightforward story teller, with minimal (if any) "artistic touches" or special effects or stuff like that. I guess the term for movies like that is "character driven."Not everyone's cup of tea... but that's how I like my movies.

If it wasn't for his roles in "Revenge of the Creature", "Tarantula", "Francis in the Navy", "Highway Patrol" and, most importantly, "Mr. Ed", Clint wouldn't be the actor/director/producer/tough guy we know today.
madhorseman Posted March 18, 2016 Posted March 18, 2016 (edited) Anyone of fan of William Friedkin?I really liked "To Live and Die in L.A., Jade, and of course "The Exorcist"!! Edited March 18, 2016 by madhorseman

Harry P. Posted March 18, 2016 Author Posted March 18, 2016 Didn't she do "A League of Their Own?" I liked that movie.
Petetrucker07 Posted March 18, 2016 Posted March 18, 2016 (edited) Didn't she do "A League of Their Own?" I liked that movie. Yep. She also did a couple of my favorites...Big and Renaissance Man. Edited March 18, 2016 by Petetrucker07
Snake45 Posted March 18, 2016 Posted March 18, 2016 Anyone of fan of William Friedkin?I really liked "To Live and Die in L.A., Jade, and of course "The Exorcist"!!Yeah, put me down for him, too. And didn't he do Sorcerer (the one about driving the dynamite trucks)? Back to Eastwood for a minute: The last movie of his that I thought was magnificently directed was Unforgiven. Oh, just thought of another one I really like: John Carpenter. I still consider the original Assault on Precinct 13 to be a masterpiece.
SfanGoch Posted March 18, 2016 Posted March 18, 2016 Anyone of fan of William Friedkin?I really liked "To Live and Die in L.A., Jade, and of course "The Exorcist"!!Not to mention "The French Connection".
Harry P. Posted March 18, 2016 Author Posted March 18, 2016 Back to Eastwood for a minute: The last movie of his that I thought was magnificently directed was Unforgiven Also High Plains Drifter.
Crazy Ed Posted March 18, 2016 Posted March 18, 2016 High Planes Drifter and Pale Rider kind of were a repeat. American Sniper for me was one of the best "In Their Head" (Seriously not ment to be a pun.....) Movies I've ever seen.
RAT-T Posted March 18, 2016 Posted March 18, 2016 Also High Plains Drifter.I THINK THE ONLY MOVIE I DIDN'T CARE FOR THAT MUCH WAS THE DEAD POOL
Harry P. Posted March 18, 2016 Author Posted March 18, 2016 I THINK THE ONLY MOVIE I DIDN'T CARE FOR THAT MUCH WAS THE DEAD POOLClint Eastwood didn't direct that movie.

1972coronet Posted March 18, 2016 Posted March 18, 2016 Steven Spielberg ... Especially Duel ( 11 / 1971 Movie of the Week ; 1972 theatrical release)John Carpenter ... I love his "remake" (okay , even I barfed in my mouth as I typed that) of The Thing , and of course , They Live William Friedkin ... absolutely for The French Connection ; and , a related person :Philip D'Antoni ! Produced Bullitt , then produced and directed The Seven-Ups .
Snake45 Posted March 18, 2016 Posted March 18, 2016 A really good movie by John Carpenter was " Blowout"!Adrian Lyne directed some good ones: 91/2 Weeks, Fatal Attraction, Unfaithful...(Diane Lane was great in that one), Jacob's ladderWasn't Blowout DePalma?
RAT-T Posted March 18, 2016 Posted March 18, 2016 Clint Eastwood didn't direct that movie. WELL, I GUESS THAT EXPLAINS IT
Snake45 Posted March 18, 2016 Posted March 18, 2016 Also High Plains Drifter.Wow, that was a LONG time ago. I think that was among his first directing gigs. As someone else mentioned, Pale Rider was kind of a semi-remake of HPD. Pale Rider is one of my favorite Eastwood westerns. It's one a lot of people overlook/forget.
Lunajammer Posted March 18, 2016 Posted March 18, 2016 I don't know enough about David Fincher to put him in the Best Of category, but I thought his directing in Fight Club was superb. LIke the directing itself was as much a character of the movie as the characters and story.
madhorseman Posted March 19, 2016 Posted March 19, 2016 Wasn't Blowout DePalma? Oh You are so right! My mistake...
Harry P. Posted March 19, 2016 Author Posted March 19, 2016 Wow, that was a LONG time ago. I think that was among his first directing gigs.Yes, I think that one may have been his third or fourth.Edit: I looked it up, it was actually just the second movie he ever directed (first was "Play Misty for Me").
slusher Posted March 19, 2016 Posted March 19, 2016 (edited) Ridley Scott and Clint Eastwood also Wolfgang Peterson who did Troy. I like Scorsese older stuff like Goodfellas and Casino also The color of money but he missed the mark on some of those DiCaprio team ups one The Wolf of Wall Street. I felt it was a very dirty movie and not good. Edited March 19, 2016 by slusher
slusher Posted March 19, 2016 Posted March 19, 2016 I THINK THE ONLY MOVIE I DIDN'T CARE FOR THAT MUCH WAS THE DEAD POOL For a late 80's early 90's movie it wasn't bad but i did not care for High Plains Drifter it was strange
chunkypeanutbutter Posted March 19, 2016 Posted March 19, 2016 Suppose I should've said DePalma for the beauty that is Scarface.Nicolas Winding Refn is good, directed Bronson (a real experience of a movie) and Drive, the movie version of my favorite novella.
