unclescott58 Posted March 26, 2016 Posted March 26, 2016 Recently I picked up Monogram's Paddy Wagon. The latest reissue with the two pre painted figures. Officer Sean Fogerty and Patrick O'Reilly. Over all a very nice kit. A typical Tom Daniel kit. So I like it. There is one thing that is baffling me about this kit. And I can not find anything in the instruction that clear it up. Which figure is officer Fogerty? And which one officer O'Reilly? It may seem minor, but it's bothering me that I don't know. Also in other threads, the question of what engine is in this kit has come up. I think early ads and box art claimed it to be a modified "Cobra" engine. What Cobra engine it is I have no idea. But, I'm more wondering about another Tom Daniel's kit I recently pick up. The Jink Expresss. Can anybody out there, tell me what kind of engine that is suppose have?
Snake45 Posted March 26, 2016 Posted March 26, 2016 Which figure is officer Fogerty? And which one officer O'Reilly? It may seem minor, but it's bothering me that I don't know. Fogerty's on the left, and O'Reilly's on the right.
unclescott58 Posted March 26, 2016 Author Posted March 26, 2016 Fogerty's on the left, and O'Reilly's on the right. ?? As seen on the box? For one is sitting in the front. The other hanging on to the rear.
Mark Posted March 26, 2016 Posted March 26, 2016 The engine is a big-block (FE-series) Ford, which did come in the 427 Cobras. I wasn't into the Tom Daniel stuff back when they were new, but I can see how well they worked for Monogram. They were careful to keep them different; they didn't duplicate engines and chassis in those kits except when one car was altered to make another. There wasn't too much duplication with engines or wheels across the whole line. A relative could walk into K-Mart, grab one of these kits and one of those Testors paint sets with the seven or eight bottles of paint, a tube of glue, and a paint brush. Instant birthday present! With the kit molded in the main color, the kid could paint the details, stick the thing together, and it would look like the illustration on the box. He's happy, the gift giver is happy, the kid probably gets another one next year.

When I was 12 I lived in Germany and depended on my grandparents to send me model kits as presents. I sent them long lists of Mopars I wanted, and they'd just send me Tom Daniel customs instead. The kits probably caught their eye as something a kid would like. I especially remember building the Tijuana Taxi, Pie Wagon and T'rantula. The T'rantula took me about a week to build. I did paint the body, but we had Christmas green and red spray paints, so that's how it was done. Green with a red engine and interior. The rest got detailed out via those little Testors bottles. I remember sitting back when I was finished and being quite pleased that it did indeed look like the car on the box!
Greg Myers Posted March 26, 2016 Posted March 26, 2016 Ah, yes the Grama / Grampa connection, I remember it well. Mine were all over the board. I remember getting a Revell SS United States kit as it was the sister ship to the one we came across on , the SS America. Now there's some internet time for ya. I'd post pictures but I'll feel lucky if this post goes through.

Greg Myers Posted March 26, 2016 Posted March 26, 2016 Kinda like an Easter Egg Hunt. and the engine, won't know till you open yer eggs.

That's bothering you? If the instructions don't say which is which, then you can decide. Problem solved.

Isn't nice, that that's all that bothers me? (If only that was true.) ? Edited April 8, 2016 by unclescott58
Mark Posted March 27, 2016 Posted March 27, 2016 Is that in the Paddy Wagon or the Jinx Express?Jinx Express engine looks (to me, anyway) like a cross between a small-block and big-block Chevy. You don't see much of it on the finished model, so I wouldn't go to the trouble of swapping it out. On the other hand, I wouldn't use it in something else, especially if more of it will be visible.
Deathgoblin Posted March 28, 2016 Posted March 28, 2016 I'd guess O'Reilly was the guy hanging off the back. He has red hair, so he's probably the Irishman.

unclescott58 Posted April 8, 2016 Author Posted April 8, 2016 Okay, it finally dawned on me that to get a answer to my original question, I could just go to Tom Daniel's website and email him the question directly. He kindly and quickly returned my email, indicated that he designed it to be Fogerty as the driver. And Sergeant O'Reilly hanging off of the back. Interesting. I don't think I've read anything before about O'Reilly be a sergeant. But if anybody should know, it would be Mr. Daniel.By the way, every time I've had contact with Tom Daniel he has been a very nice. With this last email, he did tell me not to address him "Mr. Daniel". He said to call him Tom. A little tough with the time I grew up originally buying and builting Tom's kits. But, since he requested it, I will call him Tom if I ever contact him again.
