Mike 1017 Posted March 27, 2016 Posted March 27, 2016 Today while I was watching the movie and I spotted this car going to the race. Could this be a GT 40? It's hard to see but the side scoops do look familiar. DSCN7870 par Mike Permanian, on ipernity DSCN7869 par Mike Permanian, on ipernityDSCN7867 par Mike Permanian, on ipernity Mike
FordRodnKustom Posted March 27, 2016 Posted March 27, 2016 (edited) Good catch. Looks like it could be one of the early street version. Edited March 27, 2016 by FordRodnKustom
Ace-Garageguy Posted March 27, 2016 Posted March 27, 2016 Yes, it is definitely a GT40. The MkIII was the "street" version, but ex-race cars made it to the roads as well. GT40s were used as camera cars during on-track filming too.
Greg Myers Posted March 28, 2016 Posted March 28, 2016 Read the book " A French Kiss With Death " all about making the movie and every ones involvement. Yes it is an early GT- 40 used for camera work. Remember back in the day these cars were worth little other than their utility. http://www.amazon.com/French-Kiss-Death-Michael-Keyser/dp/0837602343/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1459125991&sr=1-1&keywords=a+french+kiss+with+death
Lizard Racing Posted March 28, 2016 Posted March 28, 2016 It was the "street" version of the GT 40. Obviously driven by some guy with more money than brains; driving a car like that to Le Mans to be seen, only to park it in a public field.
Art Anderson Posted March 28, 2016 Posted March 28, 2016 Yes, it is definitely a GT40. The MkIII was the "street" version, but ex-race cars made it to the roads as well. GT40s were used as camera cars during on-track filming too. The 1966 movie "Grand Prix" was filmed in large part by camera's mounted on a modified Ford GT-40 race car. That same camera car was used for on-track filming of the 1968 film "Winning" (Paul Newman & Joanne Woodward, Robert Wagner, with a very young Richard Thomas (remember the scene in the little town of Elkhart Lake WI where the beer can went into the street-corner mailbox?) I saw a day's filming of "Winning" at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in early August 1968 (got to do that by being in several crowd scenes!) By the time they were filming "Winning", that GT 40 chassis had lost most of its bodywork, and at various times when they were making scenes on the Speedway that day, the cameraman's position changed--still marvel that he was gutzy enough to do what he did at 120-130mph out on the racetrack! sjordan2 Posted March 28, 2016 Posted March 28, 2016 A documentary on the making of Le Mans aired a few days ago on Showtime. Check your listings to see if it will be repeated.

Wrong rear end for a Mk III. Also it's missing the scoops on the upper part of the rear deck to be a Mk II. And the MK IV is a totally different car. I'm guessing it's one of the many Mk Is that were used as road cars.
