gotnitro? Posted June 5, 2016 Posted June 5, 2016 I'm looking at building the above kit modeled after one my step dad drove for years. I haven't seen many builds of this particular model, and looking for opinions on its quality of build. Are they're any serious fit issues, or quirks that I should be aware of before jumping in?I remember riding shotgun a few times running salt from local mine to the pads, and a longer trip into Canada to a oil refinery for a load of HOT oil for the local paving companyThanks for anyone's input
Mr mopar Posted June 5, 2016 Posted June 5, 2016 if you have one ? that's the first step ,if not good luck finding one they are pricey other then that the kit it self is very good,no real hang up. hope this helps you out.
redneckrigger Posted June 5, 2016 Posted June 5, 2016 It is a very good kit, and as mentioned above, is hard to find. They are well made, good fitting, and a piece MANY of us would like to see re-issued!
doogie7046 Posted June 5, 2016 Posted June 5, 2016 Its a great kit, one of my favourites. The only thing I would do is move the battery box back about 1/8 inch or so and also move both fuel tanks back as well to keep them lined up. By moving back the battery box it allows the front wheels to be in a turned position without hitting the battery box. Here are a few of mine. The daycab Transcon is actually the Transtar 11 Eagle just back dated as best I could to represent the CO 4070A
gotnitro? Posted June 5, 2016 Author Posted June 5, 2016 X2 !! Thanks everyone for the feedback, and the pics were outstanding! I've been watching the auction sites for one, waiting patiently for a deal! Would love to see someone reissue this one
doogie7046 Posted June 5, 2016 Posted June 5, 2016 Thanks for the compliments. I know that an unbuilt kit is pricey and hard to come by so you may want to have a look at buying a rebuilder. Only the yellow Ryder was a fresh kit, the others were built up junkers that I restored. In fact I am working on two CO 4070A junkers and two more Transtar Eagles. Until this kit is reissued builtups can be a cheap way to get what you want on your shelf.
Chuck Most Posted June 5, 2016 Posted June 5, 2016 I got one a few years ago (1996 reissue) for about 45 bucks, factory sealed. So don't give up hope, they are out there, and you can nab one for a reasonable price. I'm really hoping Round 2 will bring this one back.
Mike77 Posted June 5, 2016 Posted June 5, 2016 One of my favorite kits as well. I built many of them back in the 70's, and this one from the '96 reissue...
gotnitro? Posted June 5, 2016 Author Posted June 5, 2016 Thank you again everyone, I have noticed the prices are steep for these lately. I never thought to watch for rebuilders..seems a very good option.Luckily the truck I rode in hasn't been scrapped yet, but the owner said it's in sorry shape...guess the frame and cab have been rotted driving thru the harsh NY wintersDoes the kit allow for the day cab?
Fat Brian Posted June 6, 2016 Posted June 6, 2016 For a day cab you either have to cut it up yourself or find a resin conversion. This is another thing in favor of finding a kit to rebuild, it will be much cheaper if you mess it up.
Truck parts Posted June 7, 2016 Posted June 7, 2016 Check out illini resin in the add for www.aitruckmodlels.com
Mike C Posted June 7, 2016 Posted June 7, 2016 Here's a review I found of the kit with the box opened up:http://www.modeltruckbuilder.com/index.php?/forums/topic/73-ertl-international-transtar-ii-eagle-6183/
Force Posted June 8, 2016 Posted June 8, 2016 I built one of these a long time ago (back in the late 80's) and after what I remember it went together quite easy and was well detailed.I have one more in my stash so one of these days I'm going to have another go at one.
