landman Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 (edited) First order of business is to measure and sketch one. In this case it was a Black Diamond but close enough for our needs. Get a few reference photos The same guy has a doodlebug made from a Gotfredson truck. Gotfredsons must be rather scarce. Edited December 25, 2020 by landman
landman Posted July 6, 2016 Author Posted July 6, 2016 (edited) The next step is to find the makings of the engine. The closest I could come dimensionally is this 1951 Chevy block which was hanging around in the shop. This half block of another, more modern looking Chevy will donate its half of the head and a wall to widen the other one. The valve cover from a Cadillac V16 is the correct width. It will be trimmed to fit. A junk engine kindly donated its front cover. Edited December 25, 2020 by landman
landman Posted July 7, 2016 Author Posted July 7, 2016 (edited) By adding to the front I achieved the 29" block length. The junk engine also donated its bell housing & transmission.Another one donated its oil pan. This required some filling of axle holes and the hole left by the removal of the molded-in oil filter. Playing with a front cover and the water pump to achieve the general appearance of the IH engine. The amalgalm coming together. Edited December 25, 2020 by landman
landman Posted July 7, 2016 Author Posted July 7, 2016 (edited) Using both the distributor and the oil filler from the Chevy engine. The IH distributor is on a long stem which runs from just above the oil pan to above the valve cover. Made a cap for the oil filler. Edited December 25, 2020 by landman
landman Posted July 8, 2016 Author Posted July 8, 2016 (edited) Added what looks like a cam cover to one side. The valve cover doesn't cover the whole head on these engines. there is a row of headbolts visible on the passenger side. Cobbled up a canister oil filter. Edited December 25, 2020 by landman
Canso65 Posted July 8, 2016 Posted July 8, 2016 Very cool project Pat. Nice scratch building work on the engine.
landman Posted July 8, 2016 Author Posted July 8, 2016 Thanks guys. Wayne, I don't know about great. I think coarse might be more appropriate. But I think it is beginning to look similar to the 1:1, notice I said similar.Oil filter is too big, so is distributor shaft. Will see about those. It is fun though.
gatorincebu Posted July 9, 2016 Posted July 9, 2016 Pat, Impressive start on this project! Will be watching for further updates. Be Well Gator
landman Posted July 9, 2016 Author Posted July 9, 2016 (edited) Added the coil & oil filter, compressor mount and some paint. Have to address the bottom rim of the oil filter. It didn't look anywhere near that rough to the naked eye. Next big challenge, the manifolds. Edited December 25, 2020 by landman
landman Posted July 14, 2016 Author Posted July 14, 2016 (edited) Started stringing wire. Selected a suitable belt/pulley assembly, removed the belts and started aligning the pulleys . Edited December 25, 2020 by landman
jacobus Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 thats look greatthats a long way to gosure like to see it when its come togetherjacobus
landman Posted July 17, 2016 Author Posted July 17, 2016 (edited) Played with the pulleys until I had a suitable arrangement. Made up some belts. Edited December 25, 2020 by landman
gatorincebu Posted July 17, 2016 Posted July 17, 2016 Pat, What you've done thus far is impressive and looking real good. Be Well Gator
landman Posted July 19, 2016 Author Posted July 19, 2016 (edited) Had to go back to the truck and take measurements and make more sketches of the manifolds. As you can tell, I never won a drafting prize. Started on the manifolds. Edited December 25, 2020 by landman
landman Posted July 19, 2016 Author Posted July 19, 2016 (edited) Thank you guys for all the good comments. Added the the exhaust manifold. Starting to take shape. This is an intricate shape to replicate. Hopefully it should be recognizable. Edited December 25, 2020 by landman
landman Posted July 20, 2016 Author Posted July 20, 2016 (edited) Manifolds are pretty well done. Fuel pump too. And the beginning of what is supposed to pass for an oil bath air cleaner. Edited December 25, 2020 by landman
landman Posted July 22, 2016 Author Posted July 22, 2016 (edited) There it is minus the air cleaner. A few touch ups and it will be looking for a truck. Edited December 25, 2020 by landman
