Funkychiken Posted October 17, 2016 Posted October 17, 2016 hey, great paint job! please tell me what your technique is with Tamiya Clear? Do you spray several light coats (how many) or do you do heavy coats too? Thanks!
lghtngyello03 Posted October 17, 2016 Author Posted October 17, 2016 Excellent!Thank you!Great work so far,are you using Tamiya tape to do your masking? Thanks man! Yes, I am using Tamiya tape. Seems to be the only tape I can get that clean of a line with when I do trim paint such as that. Thank you. I wish I had some ScaleFinishes Clear for this job, but I made do with the TS13, which I have used in the past. For the Tamiya TS13 clear, I do several light coats (maybe 2-3 depending on what looks good) then I lay 2 heavy wet coats down (without running it.) Each coat I wait 12-15 minutes in between. Then wait a day or day and a half, and polish out. Didn't even have to wet sand, just used Tamiya's 3 step polish, and it was perfect.
lghtngyello03 Posted October 17, 2016 Author Posted October 17, 2016 Great work so far,are you using Tamiya tape to do your masking? Here are some great examples of the awesome clean lines Tamiya tape leaves on 2 other projects I did.
lghtngyello03 Posted October 18, 2016 Author Posted October 18, 2016 Thanks for the tamiya tips!No problem.
lghtngyello03 Posted October 20, 2016 Author Posted October 20, 2016 (edited) I managed to get a good bit done last night. I finished all of my trim on the body, got the chassis black in the places that it needed to be, detailed the lug nuts on the wheels, got some panels blacked out and put behind the vents at the rear wheels, and got the lights installed. The panel lines still have to be done, but I plan on doing that when I get it all done so there won't be too much handling afterwards. The trim on the hatch, windshield, and back half of the chassis was masked with this stuff, which is freaking awesome by the way. There is no way I could have did the hatch curve with tape and a razor. And it's so much faster, just brush it on, wait to dry, and apply a second coat, then paint away. When the paint is dry, simply peel the fasmak off. Edited October 20, 2016 by lghtngyello03
Davewilly Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 looks great...The fasmak.....you get it at a hobby shop? and being from Parma was it in the RC section by chance?
Foxer Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 I do really like the wheel color .. goes beautifully with the body color!

They had a pretty good RC section, and I was walking through and happened to see it. I knew it would be perfect for small stuff that was too crazy to tape, or angles/shapes that would be impossible to tape. Glad I bought it now. and the bottle is pretty large for 10 bucks. lghtngyello03 Posted October 20, 2016 Author Posted October 20, 2016 I do really like the wheel color .. goes beautifully with the body color! Thanks Mike. It was a hard choice, lol. I was stuck between Gunmetal or Bronze. I was almost going to give up on bronze until my search led me to find the Duplicolor wheel paint bronze. Everything else was too dark or too light. This stuff is awesome. and it comes in a 12oz can with their awesome "fan" type spray nozzle. So the paint goes on super thin and evenly. I sat the can out on the deck in the sun for the whole afternoon to get it good and hot to raise the pressure inside. So it laid down very nicely when it came out.
thiagomodels Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 (edited) Very cool colors of the bodywork and wheels Edited October 20, 2016 by thiagomodels

There is a couple hobby shops here in the Phoenix area that have good sized RC areas So I should be able to locate some...If not I hit up Pegasus Hobbies in Ca a couple times each year and they have a very large RC section.....well pretty much every section in that place is large!

We hardly have any hobby shops here anymore in SC. They are few and far between. We have a local hotrod shop that is over SCMA (South Carolina Modelers Association) that opened a hobby shop in their showroom. But I make all of my purchases either there, online, or wait until we go see my wife's family in Connecticut. There are so many hobby shops up there it isn't even funny. I loved the Conquest/Starions (had about 14 of them) have had lots of AWD/FWD Turbo Eclipse/Talons, 2 VR4's, one of the 1,500 Turbo Mirage Hatchbacks, and my 03 Evo 8. The 4g63 is an awesome engine. 6G72....it was ok, lol.

lghtngyello03 Posted October 31, 2016 Author Posted October 31, 2016 Back to the bench finally. Been super busy lately with work and at home work. Got a little bit of time yesterday to get my exhaust, brake rotors, transfer case/axles, and my back glass painted and tinted. It's kind of hard to tell, but I drilled the tips of the exhaust out as well. I still have to do some weathering/detailing on the exhaust. This is my first time tinting glass with Tamiya Smoke with my airbrush, and I really am pleased with the results.
