gtx6970 Posted October 17, 2016 Posted October 17, 2016 (edited) Wasn't really planning to start another one. But I had the paint out for another build and found its far to much metallic for that build. BUT, I had picked up a couple of these Corvettes at Ollies discount last week . And thought it would look killer on it instead. So dug out the parts that need to be painted. Cleaned up the mold lines and such. and shot it this morning. Did the decals this afternoon. I'll put some clear on it tomorrow to . Its testors one coat lacquer in a color called flaming orange. I'll let it sit overnight then clear it tomorrow . This color POPS in the sunlight. Now, I have to decide on some bold interior to match. Thinking orange and white Edited October 17, 2016 by gtx6970
carman1 Posted October 17, 2016 Posted October 17, 2016 It looks very similar to the ones that are molded in orange metallic , except they are transparent, your looks much better !
gtx6970 Posted October 17, 2016 Author Posted October 17, 2016 Ive been wanting to build one of these since the kit was re-issued a few years ago. I just never broke down and bought one. But at $8 each at Ollies ,,,I bought 2 ,,,just for giggles . And I think this color fits the theme of the car itself really really well. These are indoors and trust me dont do the color ANY justice.
espo Posted October 18, 2016 Posted October 18, 2016 You are right about this color. It has enough flake in it to look like a "Bass Boat". I have used it several times and really like it. If you are still looking for an Orange color for you're other project and want something just a little less "in you face" you might look at Tamiya TS-92 Mt. Orange. Just a little more subdued but just as eye catching.
gtx6970 Posted October 18, 2016 Author Posted October 18, 2016 Snake, the color is a testors one coat lacquer . Called flaming orange. #1840 The actual color has A LOT more metallic than what the cap suggests. I bought it to use on a Lawman 64 Plymouth build. But once I did a spray out / spoon test I knew its obviously not going to work for that. So I thought it would fit this build perfectly.

I've got a can of that on the shelf that I'm planning to use on a project very soon (hopefully). It's a full custom, so the sparklier, the better!.
gtx6970 Posted October 18, 2016 Author Posted October 18, 2016 2 coats color over bare white plastic. one coat Testors wet look clear , then decals. then 2 more coats clear. I hope when fully dry its looks this shiny,,because right now after just about an hour of dry time it looks like glass.
EL LOCO Posted October 19, 2016 Posted October 19, 2016 Now thats a popping paint job. Not one for something with so much metallic flakes.....though I have to admit you have me interested in it.
gtx6970 Posted October 19, 2016 Author Posted October 19, 2016 (edited) Went with an orange and white interior. Not 100% sure I like it. Its duplicolor hemi orange and duplicolor white. with a mist coat of testors clear pearl on top of it. I want something bold ,,,but I'm not 100% sure this is it . Wondering it maybe a black with white ( or orange ? ) insert would be better ? Edited October 19, 2016 by gtx6970

I like the white inserts....but think a beige or black interior would go best with the white here.....when I built mine I went all black interior, and wish now I had a secondary color in there.....so far, it looks great Bill....the Ace...

Agreed, I really like the white accents,,,its the orange I'm not crazy about . And in person the orange interior isn't even close to the orange exterior of the car. ( its my camera ) I'm thinking I might pull the interior from a spare kit and try a light tan , or light tan and white. Not a fan of black interior especially in a convertible. Then again...once the top is on it reaaly subdues the interior down quite a bit. Decisions decisions Edited October 19, 2016 by gtx6970
Impalow Posted October 19, 2016 Posted October 19, 2016 This looks awesome! maybe try a little dull-coat on that interior before you change it out? Ive always been amazed how the same or similar color looks in glossy/matte/dull colors.... Especially metallic and pearls... just a thought!
gtx6970 Posted October 19, 2016 Author Posted October 19, 2016 Btw.Anyone built one of these with the straight axle setup....am womdering how high it sits that way

Decisions decisions I built and posted one of these back a couple years when it came out, built it similar to yours, and painted it Testors orange something, the color the same but different,,,,,than yours. I just looked at it for the first time in awhile, and the all black interior is ok, but a colored one will be nicer.....if you want to compare all, its in drag cars, Sock it to ME.....the Ace...
AC Norton Posted October 19, 2016 Posted October 19, 2016 Btw. Anyone built one of these with the straight axle setup....am womdering how high it sits that way yes, mine has all that stuff the kit provides...as mentioned, check it out, .....the Ace...
gtx6970 Posted October 19, 2016 Author Posted October 19, 2016 Thanks, I found it. Doesn't sit to bad.So I think I'll use the kits straight axle .
AC Norton Posted October 19, 2016 Posted October 19, 2016 Thanks, I found it. Doesn't sit to bad. So I think I'll use the kits straight axle . the only thing I recall on this build is to be sure your slicks fit properly, as I seem to remember having to adjust things a bit to get it right,,,,,other than that, its an easy but fun old gal to build......what induction option are you going with, Bill,,, one 'charger or two, or something else entirely....the Ace...
gtx6970 Posted October 19, 2016 Author Posted October 19, 2016 same as yours the twin blower.Started of as a just paint the body and put it away for a winter time build. But I cant leave it alone. I think I'll have it done by the weekend .Thanks for the note about the rear tires. On a test fit I thought the chassis was going up to high inside the body and the rear tires hit the wheel openings . So I added some shims to the top of the rear wheel houses to bring it down a smidge. Also trimmed the inner wheel halves just a bit to bring the the tires inside the body for a cleaner look ( IMO )

gtx6970 Posted October 19, 2016 Author Posted October 19, 2016 Decals are done. I thought about all the lettering but think it looks right as it sits. Actually body is done. Working on engine and chassis next
Snake45 Posted October 19, 2016 Posted October 19, 2016 I dug up Ace's build, if anyone's interested.
