Cpt Tuttle Posted December 31, 2016 Posted December 31, 2016 I'm building a replica of my fathers 1964 Galaxie... ....but since the old 64 Galaxie is such a simple model, a 60 Starliner I build 10 years ago will be donor for the most stuff. Here I've cut out the hood on the Galaxie and put the body over the Starliner chassis and as you can see the fit is very good. True, it SHOULD be since the 60-64 Fords share the same chassis, but that's not always the case in the modelling world. They got the wheelbase right too.
Fast Floyd 2 Posted December 31, 2016 Posted December 31, 2016 Sweet!!! I love those Ole 64 Galaxies!!
Cpt Tuttle Posted December 31, 2016 Author Posted December 31, 2016 I found the correct wheels in the MPC 67 Charger, and here they have been painted with a coat of humbrol metal finish for a matte look like the real car. Neither I or my father likes polished/chrome TTs anyway, so. The tyres are only temporary to see how it looks, I probably have some better ones somewhere without a thick coat of glue smeared all over the sidewall...
disabled modeler Posted December 31, 2016 Posted December 31, 2016 Very nice project....I too have plans to build family owned replicas of vehicles we owned over the years.
Modelbuilder Mark Posted December 31, 2016 Posted December 31, 2016 One of, if not my favorite body style of that period. I did this same conversion a few years back. Good luck, I look forward to seeing more.
espo Posted December 31, 2016 Posted December 31, 2016 Great idea on the chassis switch. The '64s were a beautiful car. I had two coworkers who ordered identical Galaxy 500 hard tops with the 390 and 4-speed. Both were the medium blue metallic with white bucket seat interiors. When ever one did something wrong the other would get blamed for it. From the picture it looks like your father may of had extended shackles or air shocks on the rear suspension.
Cpt Tuttle Posted January 1, 2017 Author Posted January 1, 2017 One of the few modifications that has to be done, cutting the frame and floorpan a little bit in the rear. The most important thing now is to fit the body and interior/floorpan/engine bay, so I'm concentrating on that now, here's the floor with blue flocking.Since there was no pedals on the Galaxie dash, I moved them from the Starliner.
Cpt Tuttle Posted January 2, 2017 Author Posted January 2, 2017 Since this car has a quite rare optional extra side trim, it was of course not on the model, so I added some evergreen strip which I may file down a bit thinner later.Bought some paint that seems close enough to the original skylight blue. Will use white primer under it for the best result, I think. The Starliner bench seats doesn't have the correct pattern, but they are close enough.More true to the 1:1 car than the 4-seat XL interior anyway.
Cpt Tuttle Posted January 4, 2017 Author Posted January 4, 2017 The 1960 door panels are a bit wrong too, but hey, at least the look is a bit convincing now, I think. Since the plastic is so thin and transparent, I painted them silver on the outside.....Dashboard. I don't like white gauges, but since Ford appearantly did in 1964, that's the way they'll be.The paint may be a bit too dark and a bit too green, but a quite close match at least.A bit of orange peel but I put on three coats so I can sand it without going through, then the clear will make it glossy.
David G. Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 You're off to a good start. Excellent color choices.David G.
Cpt Tuttle Posted January 6, 2017 Author Posted January 6, 2017 Well, since I've got an 1:1 car to duplicate, I don't have many choices, lol!
Cpt Tuttle Posted January 7, 2017 Author Posted January 7, 2017 Only a mockup, but I think that the look of the full scale car is captured quite well now...
