6bblbird Posted January 3, 2017 Posted January 3, 2017 (edited) Picked up a Monogram '29 roadster pick up for 2 bucks. Gonna make an early sixties racer out of it. I'll start by strengthening up the chassis and installing a beefier differential: Going with parallel leaf springs and something that looks like a generic '50s era diff. Made a driveshaft loop and some big, fat traction bars: Edited January 3, 2017 by 6bblbird
6bblbird Posted January 3, 2017 Author Posted January 3, 2017 (edited) The rear suspension is just a about complete. Just needs shocks. The kit supplied transmission might hold up behind a four cylinder flathead but needs to be beefed up for the race motor! I used the trans and bell housing from a Dodge Challenger. 6bblbird Posted January 5, 2017 Author Posted January 5, 2017 (edited) Engine and trans fit perfectly: Since I'm going for an early '60s vibe, I think three 2bbls should work. That Mopar 6bbl intake fits pretty good on a Caddy ! Kit front end will be used although I split the wishbones, Edited January 5, 2017 by 6bblbird
6bblbird Posted January 6, 2017 Author Posted January 6, 2017 I found these cool megaphones in a craft store. They look cool as header collectors! Primered fenders on painted chassis:
6bblbird Posted January 6, 2017 Author Posted January 6, 2017 (edited) Not too sure about the roll bar. Might be a little too high. Next up....paint! Edited January 7, 2017 by 6bblbird
6bblbird Posted January 8, 2017 Author Posted January 8, 2017 (edited) OK, I'm done with this one. I changed the roll bar to something more my liking and tried a half dozen wheel and tire combos. The paint is Tamiya French Blue giving it sort of a Blue Beetle goes drag racing vibe. Not real happy with the decals. Those may change once I get my laser printer set up. Pete L. Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 Walt, Great build, really captures the essence of the era !
James2 Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 Great subject and execution. I would like to see the interior if possible.
6bblbird Posted January 8, 2017 Author Posted January 8, 2017 Great subject and execution. I would like to see the interior if possible. Thanks! I kept the interior simple. The roll bar is just a piece of aluminum rod. I scraped the chrome off of the steering wheel rim, shifter ball, and the center of the dash panel. The blue piping is just a piece of .024 wrapping wire. Flat white primer covered the yellow plastic very well. The kit windscreen was too thick so I made one out of clear acetate. This build was a lot of fun as it went together without much fuss!
10thumbs Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 Well done Walter. I really like this variation, great looking model.
6bblbird Posted January 8, 2017 Author Posted January 8, 2017 Moon tank is mounted to a spreader bar that I made from tubing. I hope that the board approves.
James2 Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 I like everything about it! Simple is best sometimes...
