59 Impala Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 (edited) This is one of the custom versions of the Mako Shark that I'm rebuilding. It's the one with the (I think) horrible hood that sticks up way to hi in my opinion. Anyway, here are a couple of pics fer ya. I'll post more pics of the work being done. Thanks fer lookin. DumpyDan Posted January 17, 2017 Posted January 17, 2017 Great work, keep this going want to see this one done Dan
59 Impala Posted January 17, 2017 Author Posted January 17, 2017 (edited) Thanks Dan and I sure will keep this one going. I want to see it done also. Here is an update on the hood. I still have some work to do on it. I can only post one picture at a time I guess. I think my pictures are a little to big to post more than one at a time. Anyway, I am working on the body at the same time and will post when I can. I finally found a way to resize the pictures and now I can post more. Edited January 27, 2017 by 59 Impala resize pictures
Len Woodruff Posted January 17, 2017 Posted January 17, 2017 Nice. I need to dig mine out and get it built.
59 Impala Posted January 18, 2017 Author Posted January 18, 2017 I got the first color coat on just a few minutes ago and it's gloss Black. I'll try and get some pictures up. Dan
59 Impala Posted January 18, 2017 Author Posted January 18, 2017 Apparently, I can't upload any more pictures for this build. So, I don't know what to do now. It says the maximum size I can load is 0.17 mb's. The pictures are all over 2 mb's. I got the colors on that I wanted and I think it looks perty good. I sprayed gloss Black, then Silver on the peeks of the body and hood. Next, I sprayed candy Ruby Red over that and then multi colored flakes over everything. It will dry for a few days and while it's drying I'll work on the chassis and interior. Dan

Dan The photos you uploaded are huge, way to large for any internet site. They are 4608x3456 pixels and 3.3mb file size. They should be in the 800 to 1600 pixel range. Also, they have been uploaded directly to the forum. The forum has severely limited file sizes because it doesn't have room tor the thousands of photos we all post. The best way to post your photos is from image sites, like photobucket.com which is free and you can use the same link to post to a hundred different sites! and, I like where you're going with this build!!

Danjust happened to me too... go to your My Attachments, find that at the top dropdown box at your profile name. You will need to delete pictures from old posts to make space for uploading more. I deleted almost an entire 2 pages of old pics to make file space for more
magicmustang Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 Yep, did the same to my Custom Corvette/Mako, sanded off the hood lump. Yours is looking good, press on.
59 Impala Posted January 19, 2017 Author Posted January 19, 2017 (edited) Thanks guys for the comments. I do have a Photobucket account but it's full (100%) so that leaves that out. I'll try and go back and delete some of the old pictures and see if that helps. Gerald, my model didn't have the hump in the hood, it had an awful large hood scoop on it. What I did was fill in the hole that was left when I removed the scoop. I do have a Mako Shark that I built when I was a kid and I restored it a couple of years ago. I think that I'm going to use reproduction vent pieces that I made from a mold that I did of the Mako's parts. Not sure yet. I'll post more if I can get the space. I will also try and reduce the size of the pictures here at home before I upload them. Thanks again. Dan P.S. Gerald, your Vette looks great also. Edited January 19, 2017 by 59 Impala
59 Impala Posted January 19, 2017 Author Posted January 19, 2017 (edited) It worked, I deleted some pictures and now I can upload some more of this car. These are pictures of the painting that I did earlier today. I Sprayed the gloss Black yesterday and then Silver over the high spots and then candy Ruby Red over that and last multi color flake in clear over everything. I will let it dry a few days and while it's drying I am going to work on the chassis and interior. Thanks again guys for the help on the pictures and I hope ya like how this turned out. Davewilly Posted January 19, 2017 Posted January 19, 2017 Looks pretty good! I like the paint job! I have one of these kits in the model stash I need to get out and work on. My Ex wife used to like to build...Vettes were her favorite car. She started some work on this one...then never finished it....I kept it cause I liked the look of it...
59 Impala Posted January 19, 2017 Author Posted January 19, 2017 Thanks Dave. There were some parts missing when I got this car, like the rear brakes, tires and wheels all around. I think I have some tires and wheels I can use. I don't know what I'm gonna do about the rear brakes though. I do have a Mako Shark that's together, but I don't want to take it apart to make a set of the brakes. I'll find something I can use I think. I also had to make the rear bumper, no problem. I made copies of the Mako's hood vents and I think that I'm gonna use them on this car, not sure yet. I also had a pair of front springs that I can use to make that operational. This reissue didn't have the metal springs that were in the Mako kit but the parts are movable. I had to strip some of the parts that I do have for the chassis and the are soaking in Dawn Power Desolver to get the Gold paint off. Dan
RestoModGuy Posted January 19, 2017 Posted January 19, 2017 Dan, the paint job and special effects are perfectly fitted to this car. Liking this a lot. I have two of the orginal MPC release of this kit in my stash, this made me pull one out and look at it and add it to my 2017 build list. Keep posting update pics, I'm following it
59 Impala Posted January 20, 2017 Author Posted January 20, 2017 Thanks Jim. I'm working on the chassis parts now. I have to figure out what I'm gonna do about the rear brakes cause they are missing. I didn't know that when I started on this rebuild. I think I have a set of tires and wheels for it. I wont know until I assemble the chassis if I can use them. I also have an original Mako Shark that I built as a replica of the rear car. The paint job was another thing for that one also. I'll post more as I get things done. Dan
59 Impala Posted January 22, 2017 Author Posted January 22, 2017 I may have to repaint this car. Bummer. I sprayed Testors gloss clear on it this morning and the wife and I went out for awhile. When we came home I checked this to see how it was going and the paint under the clear crazed. I'm trying to save it by wet sanding and so far, it's going Ok. I'm keeping my fingers crossed though. I really don't want to strip this and repaint it. This is also the first time that Ive had this problem so I don't know what happened. Dan
Snake45 Posted January 22, 2017 Posted January 22, 2017 the paint under the clear crazed. I'm trying to save it by wet sanding and so far, it's going Ok. I'm keeping my fingers crossed though. I really don't want to strip this and repaint it.If you can get the clear wet-sanded and smooth and shiny, I say leave the crazing and tell people "Yup, that's exactly the look I was going for." I've got pics of real cars in the '60s where this was in fact done deliberately.
Deathgoblin Posted January 22, 2017 Posted January 22, 2017 I like what you're doing so far, Dan. I've got one of these in about the shape you said yours started in. I wonder why so many ended up like that?
59 Impala Posted January 22, 2017 Author Posted January 22, 2017 Thanks Brian and I have no idea why they ended up like that. I'm hoping that I can save the paint on this. Are you going to be able to come to the show in March? I think that Don has a shirt for you. Hope to see ya at the next meeting in Feb. at Donato's at Easton. Thanks Snake. I could leave it this way , but I really don't like the look. Besides, I've already started wet sanding and it just might turn out Ok. Just a lot of work that I didn't want to do. Oh well, sometimes ya get the cake and sometimes the cake gets you. What ever that means. LOL. Dan
59 Impala Posted January 22, 2017 Author Posted January 22, 2017 Well, she went for a swim in the Purple pond. I couldn't get the crazing out and sanded thru in a couple of spots. A do over. Dan
Snake45 Posted January 22, 2017 Posted January 22, 2017 I've got one of these in about the shape you said yours started in. I wonder why so many ended up like that?I've got two like that, plus a mint unbuilt "Custom Vette" kit from the '80s, plus most of the body and interior of the first-issue MS I built as a kid. From this pile of stuff I hope to assemble one really nice Mako Shark II replica, a curbside "survivor resto" of my old one, and a custom or phantom "what if" as if this had been the actual '68 or '69 Corvette.

I finally got a permanent job,but my hours run 10:45am-7pm. I'll try to be at this coming meeting, and the nice thing is I have weekends off now.
59 Impala Posted January 22, 2017 Author Posted January 22, 2017 Glad to hear that you are working. If you can't make it to the meetings, that's Ok. I hope you can come to the contest in March. Now, for the bad news, I had to strip the Corvette. I do have a choice though. I can build it as a barn find that has been neglected for many years or complete the stripping and repaint it. I'm trying to make the pictures smaller so I can post some. I'm not having very much success yet. Dan

Hell, I've got numerous models I had to strip and repaint two or three times before I got the finish I wanted. Edited January 22, 2017 by Snake45
MrObsessive Posted January 22, 2017 Posted January 22, 2017 In for a penny, in for the whole nine yards. Strip it and repaint it. Hell, I've got numerous models I had to strip and repaint two or three times before I got the finish I wanted. You got that right! I've had that happen a number of times!Dan, I've got a couple of these kits too............a de-built junker, and one that's never been touched. Your original paint job was a good one-----very nice effect! If I ever get around to building either of them, I'd like to try the "fade away" technique of painting that was on the original. I've never done that before, so I'd definitely need some practice first!
