Jonathan Posted February 25, 2017 Posted February 25, 2017 I have a car body I've painted w/ Tamiya Spray Lacquer, and I'm really happy with the result. I've done most of the trim in Testor's Enamel, and it looks good so far. However, I managed to really booger up one spot. Is there a way to remove the Testor's without damaging the Tamiya paint? thanks!
935k3 Posted February 25, 2017 Posted February 25, 2017 Turpentine(Testors Brush cleaner) should remove the enamel with out hurting the lacquer
StevenGuthmiller Posted February 25, 2017 Posted February 25, 2017 Just a basic mineral spirit should work too, but I won't guarantee that.It works fine for removing enamel from the automotive lacquers that I use, but I'm not truly familiar with the composition of Tamiya paint. Steve
Snake45 Posted February 25, 2017 Posted February 25, 2017 I'm not sure it can be done chemically without damaging the lacquer underneath. Maybe, maybe not. But I've had some success with this kind of thing polishing it off with Wright's.
StevenGuthmiller Posted February 25, 2017 Posted February 25, 2017 Novus #2 works for me I think I would try this approach 1st! Steve
Jonathan Posted February 25, 2017 Author Posted February 25, 2017 I'll give it a try. If I want to repaint the black (it's a molded-in door handle), I assume I need to really wash the car body after using Novus?
keyser Posted February 25, 2017 Posted February 25, 2017 Prep-sol should clean it after removal. Care around the site with Novus should let you clean up mess without complete removal so you can just touch up a little. Meguiars plastic polish works too if you don't rub too hard. Try a little on a Qtip for less pressure. Good luck. I do this, clean it up, and lose all momentum on that build. Huge pile of nearly-builts like this. Anyone know how to fix THAT?

I'm trying to fight just that problem with this build! Touch up, fix rear glass, fix wheels ... done! (maybe???)
Jonathan Posted February 26, 2017 Author Posted February 26, 2017 So using Tamiya polishing compound (finishing), I was able to get most of the enamel off without any apparent damage to the lacquer. We'll see what happens next ...
