My GOOD GOD!! I thought I was doin alright until I came here!!! I had no idea you could do half the stuff I have seen you guys do!! I am mind blown! I've been building since I was about 9 or 10 and still I've only built about 6 or 7 total.. right now I'm workin on a 1970 Dodge Challenger T/A (first one in about 5 years or so!) and I thought I was doin something special by taping off my own racing stripes!! I wish I would have landed on this site a long time ago!! After the challenger I've also got a 1970 Dodge Daytona. I'm a MOPAR man if ya cant tell!! Now I know what I'm gonna save up my money for now!!! I had know idea you could buy A/N fittings and spark plug wires, and cnc'd parts and I have no clue whats going on with resin parts!!! I LOVE THIS SITE!!! I have been inspired like never before!!!! I feel like a kid again!! I have so many questions and I cant think where to start!

If anyone has any advice... I AM ALL EARS!!! I'd put some pics of what I'm workin on, but I think I'll wait until I start on the Daytona so I can really get down with it!!

welcome aboard. I know how you feel. Weve all been right where you are at. I havent built in close to 10 years up until now.

my first time into a model contest back back in the 90's I got my a%% handed to me but what a rush to see all the stuff people were doing.

Most important things are learn as much as you can. If its on the 1:1 it can be done in scale. AND JUST HAVE FUN!!

Welcome aboard!

Maybe the best advice I can give you is to not try to take on too much too soon! Some newbies try to tackle a lot too soon, and quickly get discouraged because their results aren't what they expected them to be.

I'd first concentrate on the basics....................such as getting rid of mold lines and dimples, cleaning up seams, and trying to get your parts before painting to fit as well as possible.

Later, as things progress, you can work up to adding aftermarket detail and whatnot.

If you're running into a problem DO ask questions! No question is too simple to ask! I've built a Daytona as can be seen in my avatar..............so if you've got any questions about the kit, ask away!

And as Shane mentioned...................JUST HAVE FUN!

Well Abe, we all have ambitions to be as good as Bill here, I mean come on, windows you can actually roll up and down? And Bill what happened to your Fotki account? It wont let me access it anymore.

well make me a liar, I got on it.

When are you gonna finish that GTO Bill?

Not anytime soon Clay. That's one of those troublesome models that I come across every now and then. The windows have to be redone because I used the wrong kind of acetate and they're now warped.

The '55 Ford is turning into one of those too.......had to completely strip the paint the other day.

I didn't like how the metallic purple turned out where I did the bodywork on the roof, so I stripped it down to bare plastic and will start over. The only problem is I ran out of Regency Purple and had to order some more from Paintscratch.

I'm a little more particular than usual with this one because I intend to take it to GSL next year-------so I want it to be top notch.

Well if you would stop being so obsessive you wouldnt have to strip the paint...

Sorry to hijack your thread Abe, post up your progress on your challenger so we can see where you are.

I built one a few months ago and I thought I did pretty good as well.

I HAD NO CLUE THERE WAS EVEN CONTESTS FOR US!! WOW!!! I must be sucluded here in Indiana.. I bought my Challenger about 2 weeks ago and I thought "surely theres some aftermarket wheels or something on the WORLD WIDE WEB"... little did I know that thats just the tip of the iceberg!!! Thats how I ran into you guys.. I think the first car I saw on here was the 32 ford truck that I've wanted to do for awhile now.. I must have looked at that guys truck for like an hour trying to wrap my head around what he had done.. I mean HE CHOPPED AND SECTIONED IT!!!! I mean I am a complete GEARHEAD and i know alot about choppin up a car and makin it your own.. It just never clicked to do that to a model!!! And then the motor was COMPLETLY decked out with plug wires, die hard battery, wire looms, A/N fittings, and I think it even had aluminum cnc'd wheels!! Then I saw the DRAG CARS!!! I dont even know where to start there!!

That daytona is SWEEEEETT!! I 'm glad I hadnt started on mine before I saw yours! I wont copy yours, but I got some good ideas of what I can do now.. I love how you actually made the doors open and even put a slit for a window to roll down into!! Is that a real spring leaf?? The battery even has terminals and wires!! The upclose shot of that HEMI looks REAL! I showed that pic to my ol' lady and she thought it was a real HEMI!!! I LOVE YOU GUYS!!

Yeah.. as soon as I go get the camera from my mother-in-laws house today I'll take some pics and post them.. I used krylons textured shimmer and then I taped off the hood and I'm in the the process of putting flat red in the stripes.. I got ahead of myself when I did it though and should have put a stripe down the body line to match, but I'm learning as I'm going... I wish I wouldnt have lost the last 2 I did about 5 years ago.. I did the '70 Chevelle 3 'n 1 and the '66 Malibu SS. I was really proud of the malibu. I think it got thrown away by my woman during a move!! sob!!

As soon as I go get the camera I'll post some pics!

Thanks for the compliment Abe!

The suspension on the model fully works with the rear springs made from brass and scratchbuilt shackles............and the torsion bars work as they twist like the 1:1. There's no working windows on that one, but the doors have a "latching pin" to keep them shut when they are closed.

I built the Daytona during most of 2000, so some of what I did may be a little hazy now.........

Abe, don't be intimidated by what you see here. Even though it's hard. Not all of us are even close to what others do, and that's ok too. But most of all, even though these guys build some fantastic models, they are the most encouraging and helpful ppl you'd ever want to meet. I know when I 1st joined this forum, like you I was just amazed at what I saw, but I'm glad I joined and you will be too. These ppl will help w/ any kind of question or problem you may run into and some you haven't

Oh and BTW, welcome to the best model community (family) on the web.:lol:  :D

I just took some pics of the Challenger I'm working on. I'm not quite sure how to put in a reply yet so I put it on my photobucket page.

http://s133.photobucket.com/albums/q59/abe...y/MODEL%20PICS/

I hope to get some good suggestions. I love this site.. now I just need to start saving every extra dollar and start buying some of the aftermarket parts and really increase the challenge level. I cant wait to get my Challenger done and start working on my Daytona now!! I think I'm gonna start on revell's '29 Ford truck after that. I love old school muscle and rat rods. I was kinda going for a rat rod/muscle car with the Challenger. I dont know what I'm gonna go for with the Daytona yet. I saw someone had JOE DIRT movie replica!! How awesome!! It looks like the real car. I thought that maybe it was bought like that until I got to looking real good at it. I just wish I could afford the aftermarket parts and some more kits.

I just got laid off a few months ago and I'm trying to go back to school while I'm on unemployment, but that also means I have plenty of time to work on my model cars..

Oh, I think I figured it out. I'll leave the rest of them on my photobucket for now though..

YOU GUYS ROCK!!

THANKS FOR ACCEPTING IN A REALLY GREAT WAY!!

Welcome to the club Abe! Your Challenger looks good.

Mark has posted some excellent advice, as well as Bill(looking at Bills work with models, I feel like I just started building models yesterday). Everyone here has been kind to me with advice and ideas to do a better build, that I love coming here!

Hope you had a great cookout today, and great memorial day!

e komo mai, Abe

And you get to talk story with that crazy guy from Hawai'i to boot!

:(

Indiana and the mid-west is one of the biggest demographic areas for the magazine.

There should be tons of people near you who build, have clubs, and enjoy sharing the hobby.

The forum is THE place to be to talk models, show off models, learn about models, and just have fun with models as well

And everyone here is ohana (family).

No ego's here, they left them all in the toaster.....

Thanx guys.. I was also wondering if anyone has an airbrush air compressor that they think is junk and wants to get it out of their garage or living room (that would be my case, haha!) let me know. I am in need of one. I believe if I could get my hands on one I could fix it and finally have a piece of critical equipment without spending much money to get it going. THANKS AGAIN GUYS!!

Hi Abe

Welcome to the forum and I have been where you are in skill level, I am proud to say that my skills have gone from low to middle of the road with the help of this board, (see pic to the left), just ask questions no matter how dumb you think it is, you never know how many people there are out there that have thought of asking it and never have, the answer or answers ( theres more than one way to skin a Cat) will help every one.

Bill is right when he says start off basic and work up from there, I can't tell you how many kits I have in boxes because I got ahead of myself, I am starting to get there now.

You said at the moment you are unemployed, between getting a job and going to school, you might want to have a go at making some small parts yourself out of sheet plastic and rod, you might want to start by making say a roll bar, here in Australia in cans of food usually powders when you open the can there is a Aluminum seal, that stuff is cool you can make all sorts of stuff from that, just about anything you have on hand in your home can be used on a model, (Just wait till you ask the question about removing paint and see the list of products you can use, and you won't get 90% of them at a hobby shop) if you are a smoker or know someone who is check out the foil wrapper stuff in side the box of cigarettes, thats heat shield in a muscle car or race car, I guess what I am saying is give some simple stuff a go you never know what you might come up with.

Try out some rattle cans for paint, I have herd guys mention home depot and stuff for good sources to start of with, I use rattle cans for some of my builds but where I buy mine probably won't help you, it's a long drive
