ranma Posted August 10, 2017 Posted August 10, 2017 I bought it at a Garage sale , It will soon be taken apart so the body can go in the paint stripper.
StevenGuthmiller Posted August 10, 2017 Posted August 10, 2017 I saw your post in the "What Did You Get Today" thread & as I said there, you completely stole this one! I'll bet the people at the garage sale would be quite surprised to know that they could have easily gotten $100.00 or more for this model on ebay. Looks surprisingly similar to one that I bought on ebay a few years ago. As long as they used a basic enamel paint, it should strip nicely. I had really good luck getting the skirts off of mine as well. Hope your luck is the same. Here is the transition that mine made. Steve
ranma Posted August 10, 2017 Author Posted August 10, 2017 Oh those fender skirt's well they just popped off when I was un-screwing the chassis from the Body, And the Paint just after an hour in some L.A. Awsome it was gone!
John Goschke Posted August 10, 2017 Posted August 10, 2017 Wow! I've got four '58 Ford kits and I'm still jealous! How sick is that?Anyway, I'm also really glad for you, that looks like a good one. Looking forward to the post-stripping pics.Just a bit of vintage kit trivia... The '58 Fords are AMT kits, not SMP. SMP did the Chevies and Imperial in '58 AMT did the Edsel, Ford, Buick, and Pontiac.
ranma Posted August 12, 2017 Author Posted August 12, 2017 (edited) AMT bought SMP in 1961 and for a few years produced both the SMP and AMT, Even adopting SMP"s three in one concept for the amt kit's. so In a way the 58 was a SMP made by AMT! Edited August 12, 2017 by ranma
oldcarfan Posted August 12, 2017 Posted August 12, 2017 Amazing find, also amazing that there are still some of those out there to even be found. The best I ever come across is a few 2000s NASCAR kits.
Sixties Sam Posted August 12, 2017 Posted August 12, 2017 Great find - and almost free! Should make a nice build!Sam
ChrisBcritter Posted August 12, 2017 Posted August 12, 2017 AMT '58 Ford vert for a buck and it's never had louvers glued on the hood, or or a spotlight hole in the A-pillar, or antennas glued on the deck?? I'd tell you to go buy a Powerball ticket if you hadn't used a year's worth of good luck... Some guys replace the chassis with one from the AMT '59 Ford or Edsel; if you plan to go that route I have a spare if you need it.
mod3l Lover Posted August 12, 2017 Posted August 12, 2017 Yes indeed, what an amazing find that was!! I am sooojealous right now. I would give my wife's right hand for a good rebuildable'58 Fairlane 500 Sedan kit. There is a build thread goingon right now on a different forum. David S.
