br67 Posted September 3, 2017 Posted September 3, 2017 Hi, I'm trying to work out which of these kits is the closest to the original issue Mpc 72 Chevelle pls? From what I understand, the most recent issue Amt kit(red box art car), is a back dated 70 model and there are some accuracy issues with the grille and headlamps. As far as the other 3 go I am unsure
disabled modeler Posted September 3, 2017 Posted September 3, 2017 Brandon.... to me the AMT blue car box one is the best of the ones shown...not 100% sure of its accuracy though. The original ones and the promos were the best ones to me.
Don Sikora II Posted September 3, 2017 Posted September 3, 2017 The MPC SSlasher might be the closest of these to MPC's '72 Chevelle annual. Definitely not the same though. The red MPC issue with yellow stripes came after the SSlasher and think had a few new pieces. The light blue AMT "Street Machines" kit is very close to AMT's '72 Chevelle annual kit.The AMT "Street Customs" kit with the red car and black stripes is based on the AMT kit even though the box shows a built MPC kit. At some point, Ertl retooled the AMT '72 Chevelle to a '70 (same kit that's currently out as the car from Jack Reacher). In the RC2 years, there was another retooling to release this '72 kit. It has some nice clear front turn signal and headlight lenses, but to my eye the grille doesn't look anywhere near as good as the original AMT part. Been a while since I looked at one, but I think the rear bumper might look a bit off as well.I'd agree with Mark and say the light-blue AMT kit is the best of the ones that you have shown if you want to build a '72. Another option is the AMT Red Alert '72 Chevelle kit from the Seventies if you're able to get a deal on one of those....it's basically an earlier issue of the light-blue kit.
Can-Con Posted September 3, 2017 Posted September 3, 2017 First off, the AMT and MPC are two completely different kits sharing no parts. That said, If it's closest to the original MPC annual, it's the SSlasher. Yea, saying the grille near as good as the original in the last issue of the AMT kit is doing it a kindness ,,, it looks absolutely nothing line any Chevelle grille. Not even the same style. What it looks like is the grille from a '72 Monte Carlo.
crowe-t Posted May 10, 2019 Posted May 10, 2019 Do any of the AMT '72 Chevelle kits have correct side bulges on the fenders and quarter panels? I know the MPC '72 Chevelle had the correct bulges.

I built one when I was about 13 years old and its long-lost to the sands of time. Would love to have another shot at that specific kit. I know it's been reissued a few times but there's nothing like building the exact same one you had when you were a kid.
crowe-t Posted May 11, 2019 Posted May 11, 2019 (edited) I still have my original MPC '72 that I built when I was about 12. It's molded in black and came with a very large hood scoop. I think it's the SSlasher but I could be wrong. I painted the body with black enamel spray can paint back then. Maybe one day I'll rebuild it. Edited May 11, 2019 by crowe-t
