Not sure of it has been mentioned here or anywhere in or on either the AMT '59 or '65 El Camino boxes who the manufacturer of the larger, slide-in camper was in the real world, but I stumbled upon this image and it sure looks much the same, save for the 'quilted' siding:

The image looks like it maybe a '665 or '66 Chevrolet full size pick up based on the tail lights and the "Barden" type rear bumper. The "quilting" design served two purposes. This gave the siding more strength and less flex to eliminate the booming that often occurred with the flat siding and of coarse styling, got to make things look good. In the real world the '59 El Camino would have been a handful to drive with a cabover camper based on the factory suspension. As an aside, in '74 I had a new Chevy C-10 short step side and for some reason I thought I needed a small cabover camper that had just come out. The dealer set one on my truck for a test drive. NO WAY, at in town speeds going around a corner was a frightening experience. I got a bed cover made to match the interior instead.

If you decide to scratch build your own camper from sheet styrene Plastistruct does have several flat sheet styles that have ribbing that would  give it more intrest. Rounded edges can be made from various diameters of hollow tubing to eliminate any overly square corners.

One of these shells sold at the CKM Show yesterday for $7.00.  Unfortunately I was not quick enough and it was the guy at the next table to mine who had it.  As soon as he unpacked it someone walked up and bought it.

Has anyone paired the AMT slide-in camper (shown below)) with the AMT '70s annual Ford pickup? I'm curious if and how well they work together.

I would think that the Camper would have to be widened since the bed of the full size Ford is wider and longer than the El Camino. Since we're dealing with plastic it wouldn't be beyond some basic fabrication.

Here's a good look at the multi-piece camper shell from the 1/25 AMT Ford F-100 Camper Pick-Up kit:

That one also ended up in the 69 Chevy annual. Very unusual shell, I've never seen a real one -- yet.

Casey, this is a great thread. Can you please replace the lost pictures to complete the history?
