HotRodaSaurus Posted June 27, 2008 Posted June 27, 2008 Hi, Just curious as to what is the highest price ever paid for a model car kit, what was it and where sold? auction house? eBay or a staright sale. This idea came up as I said anything worth real money would not be sold on eBay. I base this on some Monet paintings for sale in auction this week. Over to you. Thanks, John

Thanks, John I've paid about $85 at a LHS for a Tamiya 1/12 Porsche 934. I have seen Pocher kits go for well in excess of $1000.00 and seen a Marushin Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 engine $9800.00 Edited June 27, 2008 by CAL
Modelmartin Posted June 27, 2008 Posted June 27, 2008 Ya! Well! Wingrove and Olive Sans models sell for $10,000 to $50,000 and up. I know that for a fact but this is for a plastic kit. Highest unbuilt kit I ever saw on Ebay was an unbuilt very minty looking Monogram Big Drag for $1300. or so. Andy Martin
Jairus Posted June 27, 2008 Posted June 27, 2008 Unbuilt and unopened Slot car kits from AMT, MPC, Revell, BZ and Classic can go anywhere from 500 to three grand depending who sees it. I know they are not "models" in the strictest sense.... but they were sold to the same kids as static kits and many of us played with them back in the day. Not to mention, many of the kits shared molded bodies with their static counterparts. Here is a recent auction for a K&B AuroraBatmobile auction for instance. This example is an RTR (Ready to run)when sold and the car is actually over priced for it's condition... but better quality versions of this sell for sixgrand most of the time!

A definate contender, but lets try to find a kit
Guest zebm1 Posted June 27, 2008 Posted June 27, 2008 Dean Milano sold a "Sears Store" plastic kit/toy for $6K in May.
kelson Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 The most expensive kit i saw was a couple weeks ago, a mint 69'dodge coronet promo sold for $1,499.00 dollars on ebay.

Bernard Kron Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 (edited) OK. This is very recent, ten days ago. Raul Perez sent me the link at the time. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...E:B:WNA:US:1123 $2,020.00 ain't bad, and it is a kit (new and sealed even) so it qualifies. But I know this must be chump change. Surely someone out there can do better! B. Edited June 28, 2008 by gbk1
HotRodaSaurus Posted June 28, 2008 Author Posted June 28, 2008 If its down to eBay we could do a best percentage over true value. I sold a Pyro 1st edition 52 Chevy fas back for £80. yes thats correct, a US collector said I would/should get around $5-$10. I sure would like a few more like that but I'm not going to chance my money on Pyro's John
CAL Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 Stupid money and further Proof there is no shortage or morons in the world. $207.00 for an AMT Nova!
sdrodder Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 i know most of these are do not built kits but why pay so much for a kit???? I have seen a origional unbuilt complete great conditioned amt smp 60 ford truck sell for 990 dollars. Also saw a munsters coach sell for more than a krand but why pay so much.
sjordan Posted June 30, 2008 Posted June 30, 2008 I occasionally see large-scale Bugatti T35 kits on eBay with a Buy It Now price of over $3,000. Don't know if anyone actually buys them.

Like Bernard asked at the time, "I wonder if they'll open it?". Later,

Mine was sealed inside with all the little tiny parts still sealed in their individual bags. I bought mine with the intention to build it, but I haven't the ambition as of yet. I see there's one on eBay right now for over $600 that still has 4 hours to go!
Howard Cohen Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 The highest I ever saw in person was at Toledo about 20 years ago when I saw a red 1967 Corvette coupe promo sell and the buyer handed over $1200 cash. I have seen a Brooklyn diecast prototype sell for about $3000 cash. The highest I ever saw online was in November 2000...a Cox Chaparral 2E slot car kit, iso-fulcrum chassis, mint in box, still sealed in the plastic from someone in Spain to someone in the U.S....$12,600! I know because I had been watching the auction and missed the final bid. However, Ebay was kind enough to send me a note with the final selling price and I still have the note. The highest I ever paid for a kit was $90 for an original AMT 1960 Chevy Impala conv.
george 53 Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 Well guys a while back I complained cause I thought a coupla hundred was too much to pay for some kits and it nearly started a riot!Just goes to show a fool and his money soon go separate ways, and in this tough economy some fools still have cash TO THROW AWAY!!!!THAT is just a ###### shame!
