mrmike Posted February 10, 2018 Author Posted February 10, 2018 Thank you Dave! I decided to change the microphone cord on the two-way radio. I coiled a piece of black coated wire and drilled two holes in the radio and glued the wire in. I removed and remounted the steering wheel since it was on the steering column cock-eyed. I added a coat of flat clear to the chrome carbs and when that was dry, I started wiring the engine. One side done, the other to go... More to come...
mrmike Posted February 11, 2018 Author Posted February 11, 2018 I have completed the chassis of my Starsky and Hutch Ford Torino. The engine was completed and installed into the chassis. More to come...
mrmike Posted February 12, 2018 Author Posted February 12, 2018 Thanks Dave! Still a ways to go and I see the need for some touch ups. Thanks!
Ron Hamilton Posted February 12, 2018 Posted February 12, 2018 Very nice Mike! I love your work and approach to subjects. I am going to do one of mine as a 72 Gran Torino Sport. I spent a small fortune in resin and plastic to pull this off. I may do something similar to Clint Eastwood's 72, as I was able to procure the laser decals a long time ago, and I had the single carb manifold and air cleaner from the stock 76 kit for the engine, as while the dual quads look fantastic, they are wishful thinking on this car. My project is a ways off, as I would have to remove the mouldings from the body, add a Vinyl roof, find a set of Magmum 500s in the parts box, as the JoHan Wheels look small, scratch build a proper set of interior door panels, re-contour the bucket seats and make a center console. Mine will probably be Triple- Black with red-orange stripes.
El Caballo Posted February 12, 2018 Posted February 12, 2018 I like the details on the dash and steering wheel, it must have been a bear putting that sticker on the steering wheel.

This is a MPC stock car body on a junker JoHan promo chassis.....inspired by Clint's....

I test fit the jo han stocker body on the revell chassis, and it will work with a little trimming on the front and rear.

I look forward to this project to see just how you go about creating a '72 Torino from a '74-'76 Torino.

This sounds like a long and labored project, Ron. I look forward to this project to see just how you go about creating a '72 Torino from a '74-'76 Torino. I am taking a lot of shortcuts. In fact the Revell Torino kits are the reason that I will be able to do this. What I an going to do is the following: I have a couple of JOHAN Torino NASCAR bodies, which has all of the stock ornamentation. The fuel fill hole in the fender can be filled. The bumper and grille are identical to the replica stock car, so that is no problem. Now here is where the project becomes viable. Motor City Resin does a 72 Gran Torino Transkit. I was able to obtain a complete interior tub, hood, and tail lamps separately for the project, so I am almost there. The Revell chassis has to be tweaked to fit the JOHAN body, and I have to make a rear roll pan. To be sure, this is not a direct drop in, but it can be done. I have a set of Magmum 500 from Missing Link Resin that were JOHAN based, but they look small to me. The one-to-one ran 14" running stock, so they may be made to work. That is the way I am going to approach that one. By the way Mike, I did not mean to hijack your thread with this. I am just giving information, as my project is several years off, as I have a lot on the table right now. By the time I get around to that one, someone else would have done it, and I have no problem with that.
socal76 Posted February 14, 2018 Posted February 14, 2018 Ron, if your luck is anything like mine, Revell will have had it tooled up, released, and then dropped it after 5 years of being run before you decide it is now time to get started on it!

milo1303s Posted February 15, 2018 Posted February 15, 2018 never heard it called the striped tomato but looks cool
mrmike Posted February 15, 2018 Author Posted February 15, 2018 In the TV series, Hutch had referred to the Ford Torino as the Striped Tomato in one episode. I have not watched every episode, but my research has showed that it was mentioned in one episode, maybe the pilot.
Dave Van Posted February 15, 2018 Posted February 15, 2018 I've told Ed Sexton a few times they need to tool a 72 Sportsroof body and issue it as Clint's green version....let them know!!!!
mrmike Posted February 16, 2018 Author Posted February 16, 2018 (edited) I would like to see a '72 Torino Sports Roof as a kit. 460/auto or 351/4-speed or both! No vinyl roofs! I hate them! I wet sanded the body and hood to get rid of the trash and dog hair that found it's way into the paint. I started with a 2400 grit sanding cloth and stopped at 6000 grit sanding cloth. I'm not looking to regain any gloss, but to get a smooth surface so I can repaint the body and hood, add decals and clear coat. I had a small disaster three nights ago. I was rearranging the bench top and I knocked the Torino chassis onto the floor. I had to re-glue the radiator core support and fine a new upper radiator hose to replace the broken hose. More to come... Edited February 16, 2018 by mrmike
espo Posted February 16, 2018 Posted February 16, 2018 The paint finish is looking super smooth. I like the color coordinated Spark Plug Wires.
mrmike Posted February 16, 2018 Author Posted February 16, 2018 Thank you David! I'm trying to use up this plug wire and I may have enough left over for another engine.. It's stiffer than the wire I usually use which can be good and bad. Good because I can shape it, bad if I can't shape it like I want it.
mrmike Posted February 21, 2018 Author Posted February 21, 2018 I bought a set of seat belt buckles from Model Car Garage a few weeks ago and I decided to add them to the Striped Tomato. So far, I've lost one buckle after spending a total of 3/4 hour putting two sets together and installing them on the front seat. I need to add them to the back seat and hopefully, I'll get better with them. More to come...
mrmike Posted February 24, 2018 Author Posted February 24, 2018 I finished adding the seatbelts to the back seat and I think I could have done better. To late now so I'll live with it! More to come...
mrmike Posted February 27, 2018 Author Posted February 27, 2018 I got another coat of Tamiya TS-49 Bright Red on the Starsky & Hutch Ford Torino. The paintbooth lights are washing out the color so it is brighter and much more red than what you see here. More to come...
Mercuryman54 Posted February 28, 2018 Posted February 28, 2018 Lookin fine Mike!! Sorry about your mishap! Looks like you are recovering. Keep chuggin' along! Dennis
