STYRENE-SURFER Posted January 8, 2018 Posted January 8, 2018 Any thoughts on this old kit would be appreciated. It appears to be not at all accurate from the pictures of the real car that I can find on-line. Is it a Jo-Han molding? My memory of this kit is rather vague, but do remember seeing it on the shelf at my LHS back in the day.
Mark Posted January 9, 2018 Posted January 9, 2018 The 1:1 borrowed the artwork and name from the kit, which existed first. Jo-Han never made a Gremlin kit; these are all AMT. The chassis was shared with AMT's Vega wagon and Pinto funny car kits.
STYRENE-SURFER Posted January 9, 2018 Author Posted January 9, 2018 Thanx Mark, That is good to know. Just pulled the trigger on this kit over the internet. looks like a fun build. Have not seen any examples of this kit built up.
iBorg Posted January 9, 2018 Posted January 9, 2018 The AMT kit is stock wheelbase. The 1:1 car had a much longer wheelbase. I'm thinking 98 inches for the stock car (and AMT kit) and 110 for the 1:1 funny car.
Daddyfink Posted January 9, 2018 Posted January 9, 2018 With some creative stretching, this would be cool
Daddyfink Posted January 9, 2018 Posted January 9, 2018 Check out Sven's build. A real knockout! http://www.svensworldofwheels.com/gremlin_funnycar_page.html
Casey Posted January 9, 2018 Posted January 9, 2018 Basically the stock body shell with a molded closed hood and notched cowl over the generic (and too short, more like an Altered) chassis underneath: Here's what you're in for. http://modelkitreviews.proboards.com/thread/685/amt-t347-gremlin-funny-car

afx Posted January 10, 2018 Posted January 10, 2018 (edited) They competed stock wheel base cars as well. Don't believe they had funny car chassis however. Edited January 10, 2018 by afx
STYRENE-SURFER Posted January 10, 2018 Author Posted January 10, 2018 Thanx all for the info and inspirational pics. USPS delivered the kit today (kudos to Spotlight-Hobbies for super fast shipping). The most intriguing part of this model to me is the chassis, and blown 426 HEMI. The front dragster style wheel/tires are strange on a drag car like this but the spoked wheels are maybe the best moulded Ive seen, tho perhaps to small diameter. The front tires scale out to about 22" DIA. The body is quite good, it could use a stretch like has been stated, but that would require a different more modern style chassis. Hmm, maybe a re-body is in order?

I measured those wire wheels (.715") so about 17.9" as full size DIA. They might be a good on an early FE dragster.

Being more of a Ford fan myself (and somewhat schizophrenic modeler} Im thinking Pinto Any idea of which AMT Pinto bodies would fit this chassis? It could be cool to build a phantom car using some of the old pro stock Pinto decals Ive seen. Edited January 11, 2018 by STYRENE-SURFER

It could be cool to build a phantom car using some of the old pro stock Pinto decals Ive seen. There were two AMT Pintos, "Crazy Horse" and "Crazy Horse II". The first was a '71 (sedan), the second a '72 (hatchback). The stock kit body was used, separate hood and all. AMT probably had to do the "II" due to the body style difference.
STYRENE-SURFER Posted January 11, 2018 Author Posted January 11, 2018 Looks those two options are rare and going for big money on eBay. I wonder what other small wheel-base bodies are out there that would fit this chassis. Would love to find a "Crazy Horse" body, just trying to make things more interesting.
STYRENE-SURFER Posted January 12, 2018 Author Posted January 12, 2018 (edited) Well, it looks like I have a line on a glue-boom "crazy Horse" if all goes well. A sealed kit is going for around $200 these days. Every time I try to start a new build I end up in this predicament. When all the pieces are rounded up I will have to start a thread "How NOT to build a AMT Pinto Funny Car" The Gremlin body was not the reason why I bought this kit it was the chassis and other bitts that I was interested in. I did however learn how to drive a stick in my brothers V8 Gremlin (almost launched it through the neighbors garage door trying to find revers) LOL. I was young so give me a break!
