Zen Posted January 29, 2018 Posted January 29, 2018 Are the Johan promo cars made in a styrene plastic as the regular glue kits? Been trying to fix a broken windshield post on a Johan Maverick promo with no success, keeps breaking apart on me. Thanks, Zen
Casey Posted January 29, 2018 Posted January 29, 2018 Which product are you using to re-glue it? (assuming it's a clean break?)
Ace-Garageguy Posted January 29, 2018 Posted January 29, 2018 I know some of the Johan kits were made of a plastic that's vastly more solvent-resistant than the bottom-of-the-barrel styrene kits are made from today. Some conventional styrene glues won't touch the stuff. As a windshield post has a very small bonding area anyway, you might try a high-strength epoxy.
Zen Posted January 29, 2018 Author Posted January 29, 2018 Yup, it's a clean break. Tried Testors liquid glue & Extreme Power super type glue.
Mark Posted January 29, 2018 Posted January 29, 2018 Some mid-Sixties Jo-Han promos were Cycolac, very tough plastic, hard to cut and seems like no cement sticks to it. I'm certain that the Mavericks are styrene though.
Mercuryman54 Posted January 31, 2018 Posted January 31, 2018 Can it be pinned and epoxied? Or supported from the back with a fine wire and epoxy? Just some thoughts! Dennis
Zen Posted January 31, 2018 Author Posted January 31, 2018 Probably not able to pin it, will try some epoxy and maybe some small wire on the backside.
Ace-Garageguy Posted January 31, 2018 Posted January 31, 2018 4 hours ago, Zen said: Probably not able to pin it, will try some epoxy and maybe some small wire on the backside. Most 1/25 windshield pillars have enough meat to drill a matching pair of .010" holes about 3/16" deep, and insert a short piece of .010" "music wire" which is steel (and considerably stiffer than the same diameter brass wire). Carefully aligned, you can usually get a decent repair with a good quality epoxy, and the joint will be MUCH stronger than it can possibly be if the broken ends are just butt-glued back together.
