Ford LNT 9000

This is my new project. I've always liked the look of these short wheelbase trucks. This will be a replica of a Pilot Carriers truck. To be a little different this one is going to have a 3406 in it. A friend of mine had two of these with 3406s in them. I tilted the engine based on reference picture of Cummins since I can't find any reference pictures of one with a 3406.

Interesting project.  I didn't think the 3406 was offered in the LNT9000, only the L/LT9000 because of the engine length.

I'm not sure what years they were available. One of the references that I looked up said that they were offered in all 9000 series trucks. I've seen 290 Cummins in them on a tilt. I even have some reference pictures of one with a Cummins. There doesn't seem to be a lot of difference in scale. I had a friend who had 6 Louisville trucks. Two regular hoods had Cummins, two short hoods had 3208s, and two short hoods with 3406s with a tilt and dog houses.

Looks like you are using the Auslowe Ford fuel tanks.  I plan on using them on a project too.

Brian....Looks pretty dang cool to me..!   I like many of the shorter trucks and single axle ones.   I have a few dream project ideas in my head rolling around Id like to do.

Cool project. I put a 3406 in a Ford C600 tilt cab.

Sounds logical, build a 9000 series for the big power!  Louisville 9000's were always big fleet favorites. Jim B is correct, the Cat required the longer L front end, however other Detroits and Cummins cleared LN's.  But maybe you can build a bigger non stock doghouse. This data from '75-'76.

This 81 appears to have a 3406 in it? If this is not a 3406 what is it. It doesn't appear to be a 3306.

Here's the dog house on this truck with the Cat. You guys have almost gotten me talked into changing engines. If we can decide that this one is something other than a 3406 I will. My friend had two with 6 cylinder Cats in them that looked like this. Both were short hoods. He said that they were both 3406s. I never looked very closely at them, I just took him at his word. As you can see, there isn't much to see under the hood anyway.

The Monogram 3406 after I slightly modified the intake measures 2.05 inches high by 2.05 inches long. The Cummins out of the AMT KW measures  1.85 inches long and 1.95 inches high. In 1:1 that would make the Cat (if the model is right) about 2.5 inches taller and 5 inches longer.

The 87 brochure says that the 3406 was unavailable in the LN, but it doesn't say that under the tandem (LNT). Strange though, my friends were LNs with tags.

I knew that they would have been unusual which is the reason I went this route. I wasn't even considering power as I was figuring on the "Economy" 3406 in the lower horsepower ranges. If they were non-existent, then I will go with another power plant. I'm wanting this to represent around an 81 or earlier model.

The plot thickens, here is a '80-'81 brochure that does list the 3406 for 9000 series.

Maybe they made them until someone had to pull the head off one.

I didn't think there was any doubt that the 3406 was offered in the 9000-series just whether it was offered in the LNT9000 as well as the LT9000.  From the 1987 brochure, the 3406B was offered in the "Ready to Work" LT-9000-702, LT-9000-703, LT-9000-708, LT-9000-710, & LTS-9000-705

The 1993 brochure, shows that the 3406C was only available on the L-9000 & LT-9000:

Now, that doesn't mean that someone couldn't have stuffed a 3406 into a LNT9000 glider, or into a truck that blew a different engine.

Well, I've decided to move forward with the Cat. These trucks were definitely the exception to the rule, but I'm pretty confident that they were available, at least for a time.

Here is an 88 with a 3406.

Here's a 90 model with a 3406.

And of course the 81.

Wish I could post pictures of the brochures I have but yes a 3406 Cat was available in the LN series (9000) . So you would be correct but you will have to update your hood to simulate the separate grille surround, 3406 Cat was not available till 1974 and the Louisville line had updated their hoods by then . Hood update is easy just scribe a line around the edge and paint it Duplicolor bumper chrome to give it a anodized Aluminum polished finished.

Looking forward to this build, I like that you used the RTE suspension instead of the stock leaf that was included in the Ford tractor/dump kits . I would also swap out the wedge brake chambers to the s cam type (found in KW or Pete kits for example), no matter which way you go this will be a great build!
