Hey guys, I'm having some problems getting the Detailer to really stick to the windows. I tried putting on a light coat and then a second coat but when I put the second coat on I just pull up the first coat. Really need some help. Don't wanna waste too much of it......

Oh, I should add that I'm brushing it on and I DO NOT have an air compresser to use my airbrush....

Abe, I'm afraid the only good way to apply The Detailer is with an airbrush. When you brush paint-----the heavier, wetter coat it's softening the previous coat and you're taking it up with your brush.

I haven't tinted windows in many years...........I remember using Tamiya water based acrylics to airbrush on my windows.

Here's a couple pics of a Studebaker Golden Hawk I built back in '98 where I tinted the windows. Pardon the wrecked appearance........this one was wrecked by a cat I had back then ;) , and I lost interest in getting it back together. You can see the subtle tinting of the glass............

The best way to do this would be mist coats gradually put on. After it's dried thoroughly you can rub it out just like regular paint. You have to be careful though not to rub through as you won't have as many coats as you would a body paint job.

This is also (for me) one of those trial and error jobs. If the paint doesn't come out the way you want it, you can wash the Tamiya off with some Windex and start over! ;) BTW......when using the Tamiya acrylics, you want their clear colors such as blue, green and smoke.

Have you tried using Tamiya Smoke? Comes in the spray can and goes on well. You just have to make sure to mist the coats as you apply it, this paint will run on you really quick so you really have to mist it until you get the desired shade. I have had great success w/ it.......

Hey Cruz, when did you do the Mazda?? I don't remember that one! That looks fantastic as usual!

I keep forgetting about the Tamiya spray cans as I'm an airbrush junkie! ;)

I decant Tamiya sprays all the time to run through my airbrush. Saves a lot of paint, and being able to apply very fine mist coats is a definite plus. I have been known to put a final wet coat straight from the spray can over the airbrushed paint, which works wonders.

I did the Mazda about 5 months ago, you probably didn't make it to the meeting when I brought it. Hey Bob, you are correct about the Tamiya cans, I also decant them but also finish my last clear coats w/ the can...... ;)

Anything after the first coat, you get only one chance. Lay it on as evenly as possible for the second coat, but never, ever go back over it with the brush. In a matter of seconds, the first coat is soft enough to pull up.

I was afraid of that. Do I need to thin it or anything??? That stuff is AWESOME BTW!!! I'll just have to go buy some aerosol cans for my airbrush. I need to practice anyway. I tried just pouring it on it last night with semi-satisfactory results. It was building up in spots and I didn't like it so I thought I'd better ask the experts before I waste anymore of it. Whats really sad is that Stude, even wrecked, looks better than anything I've ever completed. The nearest Tamiya distributor near me is about 45 miles north and I haven't even been there before (HobbyTown USA). Are there any warnings about the aerosol cans?? I know you can't shake them before you use them, but thats about all I know. The next big spend is definitely gonna be an air compressor!!! THANKS FOR YOUR HELP, once again, BILL....

Never tried any Tamiya products. I have went through their website THOROUGHLY and I have fell in love with alot of their stuff.... I've also seen the paints on your guys' builds and I have been dying to get some of their paints.... I've seen the smoke on the web, but have never tried it. When I finally get back on my feet that will be one of the first things I do is go buy a BUNCH of Tamiya paints!!! Its taken me SOOOOOO LONG to get as far as I have on this build because I've had to buy everything one at a time if I even have enough money left at the end of the week. Money SUCKS!!!! I've become quit resourceful though!!!

BTW!!!! THAT MAZDA IS ABSOLUTELY STUNNING!!!! Is that a Tamiya or Aoshima kit???

What is the best way to decant a rattle can?? I tried to once and made one HELL of a MESS!!!! I had sprayed it all over the place, including my FACE!!!! It was a good thing I was outside with my sunglasses on!!! If I would have done that in the house my woman would have made me dig my own hole!!!

I found that out the hard way!!

Thanks guys!!

This build has been nothing more than TRIAL AND ERROR for me!! This build has been pretty much a stock build except some details here and there and I started in APRIL!!!!! When I started I was just gonna build it the only way I knew how, which is pretty sad when I think about it now, and that just meant puttin as nice a paint job as I could and making sure everything was straight and getting all the little details painted, like the fuel lines molded on the chassis and thats about it!!! I ran into this site about 2 weeks into building it and immediately stopped and started almost from scratch. I have been trying all kinds of stuff. I put some detail wire in the door panels, tore some racing seats out of a die-cast my boys had destroyed and painted and put detail wire in the grooves, trying to run brake lines, I have been trying to fill in the dash cluster so I can place the aftermarket gauge cluster in instead, and then theres some other small details like plug wires, distributer, fuel lines, and a few other things that I'm not going to do on this build because I got ahead of myself and cant afford some of the small things right now. This build is a learning experience. My next build will definetly be much better!! I'm just ready to get this one done!!! I love thepeople here!!! I can't imagine doing all the stuff I have without everyones support. ESPECIALLY YOU BILL!!!! Just about every post I have had, Bill has been the first one to help!!! I think its just because he sits there and waits for me!! :unsure:B) He knows that I'm gonna be the one to ask all kinds of crazy questions and I know hes gonna be the first with a crazy answer!! :D

As far as thinning Tamiya paints (Acrylic) I advise using their thinner. Some guys have used regular alcohol, but I had a problem with fisheyes doing that so I'd rather spend the extra money to be on the safe side and use their brand.

When I decant anything from a spray can, I use a snow cone cup. Cut the tip off the end, tape the cone to the jar, and spray right into it. Now I spray mine inside my spray booth as the fumes can still lurk everywhere in the house if I don't.

Here's a shot of the snow cone cup............I was using this primer a while back when I was building my '05 'Vette. I've discovered Plastikote now and won't look back!

Snow cone cups aren't sold locally here for some reason.........I got a pack of 200 or so off eBay for about 10 bucks IIRC. B)

Some guys make a funnel out of newspaper, and others have their own method------this is what works for me.

You can get those cone-shaped cups anywhere...Walmart, fer instance, They're refills for home water dispensers. Solo is one brand...probably several more out there too.

Yeah, I checked our local Wally and didn't see 'em at the time I needed 'em. I hate traipsing all over town looking for stuff-----or when you call, you get someone half stoned they don't know what you're talkin' about so I just ordered 'em online.

Typical...you never find what you need when you need it!

Talk about resourceful!!! I think I have some here from a snowcone maker I had a long time ago. Do you spray it directly into the paint bottle for the airbrush???

I agree with the calling everywhere and getting some dumba$$ kid whose ripped or just too stupid to even realize he's talking to someone on the phone.... Its impossible to get good service anymore!! I went to Hobby Lobby and asked a woman if they carry flocking and she had to go get someone else and when they came they had to go get 2 other people as well..... NEVER got a good answer from all 4 people!!!! IDIOTS!!!! I know more about that store than their own employees!!! I dont know haw many times I've been in the model aisle and had to answer someones question that none of the actual employees could answer!!! Now how sad is that???? If I need to know if Hobby Lobby has something or not I just get on the website and look it up and if they have it I just look at what department its in... If ya have to go in there and ask you'll just get that look of stupidity and before ya know it, you've got the whole place tryin to answer your question!!!!
