Foxer Posted March 28, 2018 Posted March 28, 2018 (edited) I'm ramping back up on completing this long standing TR4A build andmost all stalling points have been overcome with 3D Printing and Molotow Chrome. I have one part I that can't locate anything similar or a pen end I could fabricate one from. It is very cone-like and seems there has to be some craft piece of tube cap I could find to use. The best part is I only need a driver side mirror! I'm just throwing this out to see if anyone recollects a similar mirror. Any help will be appreciated, no matter how silly. Here's what I need ... SfanGoch Posted March 28, 2018 Posted March 28, 2018 Fabricate it yourself. It's easier than you think. I just made one. I stuck a piece of 5/32" dia. sprue (or, styrene rod of a similar size would be a better choice) into my rotary tool and, using a flat jeweler's file, made a copy using the photo as a reference. I used the file to obtain the contours. It took all of five minutes and it looks like the pictured one. The bezel can be made the same way using a slightly larger piece of sprue or styrene rod. If you use 3/16" rod, you can make the mirror with the bezel attached. Another choice for material is 3/16 aluminum rod, which is soft enough to work with and can be polished.
afx Posted March 28, 2018 Posted March 28, 2018 (edited) Looks like a Ray-Dot mirror. There was an aftermarket company, who's name escapes me that offered them in white metal. I used them on this build. Edited March 28, 2018 by afx

I'm leaning that way for sure, even the front mirror face should be easy enough. A pin with some filed plastic around it for the arm.

Snake45 Posted March 29, 2018 Posted March 29, 2018 Do you have any model airplane friends? I'll bet one of them has something the right size and shape in his box of spare/leftover bombs/rockets/fuel tanks.

Foxer Posted April 1, 2018 Author Posted April 1, 2018 I appreciate all the help coming up with a way to make this mirror. After all the hem and hawing I just went down to the shop and stuck a chunk of sprew in the drill and shaped the main body. The large sprew even has a center void to allow drilling a hole down the middle for a brass pin! I found an old beadlight bucket in to Old Parts box and flattened the end after drilling a center hole. This is it at this stage and I believe it will look close to the 1:1. It's going to be tricky sawing the bucket to a small sliver, but a lot of filing may be in store near the end. I'll cut a disk to insert for the mirror in the end. The hole in the main cone will get a pin with a slot like the original. Then. a brass pin where the arm is and trapped between a couple .02" flats which will be sanded to shape. Where's my Molotow Pen?
