Luis Bernier

Someone asked awhile back about anybody that did chrome plating in Canada.  I'm pretty certain this is the name of the guy that did some vacuum metalizing on some parts that I purchased from him through Ebay.  This has been some time ago.  The last I recall was he was working in a mental hospital and was purchasing some property out in the country.  He was going to move his equipment, but was in need of spending a large amount of money getting it working properly again.  Funny how names can come to me out of no where.  Here is a Mustang he did for me.  It is a Representation of the BOSS HOSS Mustang that came from Hot Wheels when I joined the club in about 1969.  Here is a picture of some parts he had sent me.

Yes, I do believe this was his seller name on Ebay back then.  Is he still in business?  He plated some parts for me in red and blue also.  The red parts were for a Ferrari Barchetta F50 and the blue parts were for a 70 Monogram Pontiac Trans Am.  I thought they were cool back then.

I have Louis on my e-mail contacts list and just fired an e-mail off to him.

Last time I heard from him he had moved but hadn't set the plating equipment back up. I don't think he bothers with it any more but I hope I'm wrong.

GEEEEZ, I think it has been nearly ten years since I purchased anything from him.  He could be making some money.  I Would like to buy his or  some chrome plating equipment.  I could probably keep a couple of people busy here in Phoenix.  There are some plating companies here, but I don't think they do plastic parts.

http://www.platingsales.com/index.html  I found this company and just about purchased one of their chrome plating kits.  If there is anyone living near this company, can you tell us about it?  thanks

Plating (electroplating) is not what is used on plastic model kit parts (at least on majority of kits).  The "plating" we see on kit parts is vacuum metalizing.  This process is totally different from plating.

There is a page about plating plastic materials.

Yes, plastic can be electroplated, but I'm just saying that the "plated" parts in plastic kits are not plated but vacuum metalized. It is a different process.

Yes, I am aware of that process and terminology.  The equipment is really expensive.  This seems much cheaper.

But "real" plating of plastic parts is very modeler unfriendly.  The plated layer of metal can't be easily scraped for good glue joints (much less fully removed).  Trumpeter issued a kit or two with that kind of plated parts and everybody hated it.  Electroplating also uses all sorts of nasty chemicals (which are dangerous and hard to dispose of).   Professional resin casters (like Modelhaus and others) send their resin parts out to be vacuum metalized. It doesn't seem to be a big problem. And it is much friendlier to the modelers (and it looks good too).
