Bob Ellis Posted September 4, 2018 Posted September 4, 2018 Is there any issue of enamel versus lacquer?

I'm going to have to try some Krylon soon.. it is so inexpensive and readily available.

Its nearly impossible to get a run with that stuff, and rubs out nice. But I`ve also used some Rustoleum with good results. It dries rather quickly and rubs out nice from what I have seen. It will be interesting to compare the durability. I have cars in my case painted over 20 years ago with Duplicolor that still have a glass smooth deep finish. Here are a couple builds with Rustoleum finishes. The Wheaties car is the engine enamel orange. The Lowes car is Valspar (some shade of blue) and Rustoleum Painters Touch Marigold with Rustoleum Painters Touch Clear over the whole thing. I went to Home Depot today to get a new flapper for the turdlet and stopped by the paint department. They had a large selection of Painter's Touch paints for $4 so I grabbed a can of yellow that I need for my next project and also the Gloss clear. I figured with results like above I've got to give it a try. The can also says it is for plastic so I am hoping it will not craze like I have so much trouble with Duplicolor. I'm really hoping it works well.. if anything I can decant it and use in the airbrush when the weather cools down next month. Edited September 5, 2018 by jchrisf

This stuff is great for intercoating (also know as a barrier) as well. I use this stuff between many many different paint products and finishes with out any issues. As a top clear coat it is glass smooth without any wet sanding or polishing. Edited September 5, 2018 by Rider

Rider Posted September 5, 2018 Posted September 5, 2018 39 minutes ago, jchrisf said: Where do you get it Rider? Will it go over acrylics? Goes over pretty much anything, I have yet to have any kind of reaction. I buy from autobody supply shops. As I said it works great for intercoating when mixing different types of paint and different brands. If anyone tells you different they haven't used it. I dig it because I use a ton of different products for coverage and colour choices. If you do a search on here (not sure exactly what subject topic to search) for messed up paint and reactions many are caused from using one manufactures paint over another's. Even if they are both acrylic. I have had reactions between Tamiya and testors, Tamiya and Valijo, Duplicolor and testors, etc. I am no chemist but results don't lie and I am not one to talk BS just to talk. For me Poly-U is a safety net. Ever since I started using it a few years ago for intercoating I have yet to chuck a shell in stripper as a direct result of a bad reaction. It's not cheap by any means but it is a piece of mind for me when messing around with so many different types of colours and paint combos. This thing has over 40 colours on it and a number of paint manufactures paints, enamel, lacquer, acrylic, dollar store nail polish which is some type of lacquer, nail polish from China (who knows what's in that stuff) craft die, my own concoction of Pledge mixed with some colour, the list goes on and on. No reaction at all.

I have sprayed it over bodies that had some acrylic details on them, but I don't use a lot of acrylics. Testors clear lacquers are extremely mild. You can shoot them over enamel with no problem. Chuck Most Posted September 6, 2018 Posted September 6, 2018 There's no d at the end of Advance. Sorry- I worked there for five years and it always got on my nerves. That being said- I don't see too much of a problem. I always bought my DupliColor from the local Meijer. Their cost was less than what it would have been from Advance with my employee discount, and they often had buy one get one half off sales. I know not everybody has a Meijer in the area, but if you look around I'd think you'd be shocked how much less you can get it for than at Advance. Or any other auto parts chain really- seems like the auto body stuff is always pretty dearly priced when you go to an auto parts store.
