afx Posted November 18, 2018 Posted November 18, 2018 (edited) This thread will be a bit of a ramble as I'm playing with different versions of the 964. First up is the Turbo body. I added a strip around the circumference of the factory five spoke wheels to increase there diameter and also deepened them to fit the racing slicks. Fujimi provides only the stock interior in the racing version of the kit. I removed the back seat and fabricated a bulkhead as a first step to a proper racing interior. afx Posted November 18, 2018 Author Posted November 18, 2018 (edited) Working with the narrow body, I grafted on the turbo wing from another damaged body I had on hand. Although not 100% correct this will allow a reasonable facsimile of the C4 Lightweight to be built. A very rare car of which only 22 examples were built. Or by using the high wing I could build a N-GT version. I'm going the Lightweight route as I will be using the high wing on the Turbo. Edited November 19, 2018 by afx
porschercr Posted November 19, 2018 Posted November 19, 2018 Great start JC. Always a a pleasure to see your work. Trevor
Dann Tier Posted November 19, 2018 Posted November 19, 2018 Nice, JC!!, cant wait to see more of these!!!
iamsuperdan Posted November 19, 2018 Posted November 19, 2018 My all time favourite generation of Porsche. Watching with great interest!
Tommy124 Posted November 19, 2018 Posted November 19, 2018 Hi JC, great to see you taking these on. I didn't know there ever was a Carrera 4 Lightweight. Sounds a bit contradictory to me, because four-wheel drive is the opposite of lightweight... I'll be following your progress! 16 hours ago, afx said: I added a strip around the circumference of the factory five spoke wheels to increase there diameter and also deepened them to fit the racing slicks. Could you show more detailed photos of this please? I understand that you did not only increase the wheels in diameter, but also in width?
afx Posted November 19, 2018 Author Posted November 19, 2018 Jurgen Barth managed to shave 770 lbs(!) from the standard C4 Thomas - I think that qualifies as Lightweight. I'll post some picture of my wheel modifications when I get a chance. I added the depth (width) to the back of the rim.
afx Posted November 20, 2018 Author Posted November 20, 2018 Thomas here are pictures of the modified wheels. Sliced a section off a spare wheel rim, glued it to the back edge to make rear wheels wider (deeper) glued strips of .010" (0.3 mm) around the circumference of the rim to increase diameter. added strips of tape to fine tune diameter
Funkychiken Posted November 20, 2018 Posted November 20, 2018 This is going to be a killer build, looking forward to it!

I was thinking you'd have to deepen the rim well too, and I would like to have seen that. But I forgot those 1-part cup wheels by Fujimi basically are fine (realistic) the way they are, yet of course better with the modifications you made. For the 3-part wheels (Speedline rim) as used on the RS 3.8, it would take more work to deepen the rim well on the rear wheels (as the kit comes with 4 pcs. all the same...). I tried to do a similar thing on my Italeri Countach kit back then, it actually started well but did not work out in the end... It did look like this:
carmad1957 Posted November 20, 2018 Posted November 20, 2018 Nice build you're into there! Look forward to seeing it progress!
cruz Posted November 20, 2018 Posted November 20, 2018 Fell in love with this one at the meeting.....

afx Posted November 21, 2018 Author Posted November 21, 2018 (edited) Appreciate the comments and interest gentlemen. Thomas, to add more offset to the wheel I usually find a suitable rim donor and attach it to the outer rim edge as I have done here to create the very deep offset at the rear wheel: Another techniques is to remove the rim center and slip them into an aftermarket aluminum rim sleeves like so: Edited November 21, 2018 by afx
Dann Tier Posted November 21, 2018 Posted November 21, 2018 Still looking great, JC!!...thanks for posting the wheel how-to!!
afx Posted November 21, 2018 Author Posted November 21, 2018 Thanks Dann. I hope to get some bench time over the Turkey Day break.
afx Posted November 22, 2018 Author Posted November 22, 2018 (edited) The Lightweight was intended to be a competition model but never raced. I'm going to deviate a bit and build the car as an all out race car. The roll pan at the rear turned under. Porsche painted the lower lip black to disguise it. I chose to remove the lip all together as most 911 race cars have a short rear valance. Also created the 2nd notch on the driver's side for the dual race exhaust. Roll cage construction comes next. Tommy124 Posted November 22, 2018 Posted November 22, 2018 Looks good so far JC. Looking forward to see more... I'm not sure about the meaning of this - can you please explain? 39 minutes ago, afx said: The roll pan at the rear turned under. Porsche painted the lower lip black to disguise it. Before: After: On the 1:1 the area below the crease line is painted black to disguise that it is there.
