Jhedir6 Posted January 25, 2019 Posted January 25, 2019 This will be my entry for the upcoming 24hr of Daytona group build on Facebook. This is the 13th year of this group build and my fourth. Details of the builds can be followed HERE for anyone wanting to see who's doing what and see the progress of the builds over the race weekend. Tamiya's new Ford GT. Paint will be Gravity Colors.....probably Liquid Red, but still undecided at this stage. Updates will start Saturday afternoon. Build begins at 12 noon EST even though the race doesn't start till later in the afternoon.
Funkychiken Posted January 25, 2019 Posted January 25, 2019 Please, please send us some invoicing pics! Really looking forward to this version...
Tom Geiger Posted January 25, 2019 Posted January 25, 2019 I’ve been doing this build since 2013 and am psyched for this weekend! I will be doing the Monogram 1930 Woodie wagon to fit into my Model A line up. It’s a lotta fun with good company overnight. It’s cool being up all night knowing there are more than 80 modelers doing the same thing. And it’s fun to post 3am progress reports to the Facebook page and instantly people start commenting!

I agree, the instant feedback overnight helps keep you motivated.
vamach1 Posted January 26, 2019 Posted January 26, 2019 I have a dumb question. Could you paint almost everything in say four hours, go to sleep for six while evertything dries and wake and up finish the build or do people stay up the entire 24 hours? Just curious.

Pending on the paints used you can do all that faster. Airbrush paints dry really quick. Prime, paint, decal, clear all in a couple hours. Mine should go quick as there are only a few external body decals. Gravity paints dry fast. I also have an food dehydrator to use to speed it all up. Many people build for a few hours then rest. A lot of people go to bed at say midnight and get back up at 6am to finish off before noon. Some people know they wont finish but participate anyways and finish their builds off in the days that follow. It's not a contest, more of a challenge to yourself to see if you can finish off a kit in the 24hr window. Rex, you can find details HERE and if you're interested join up. I think we're almost at 100 builders now, with other's that cant build this year for whatever reason tuning in to watch and motivate the builders.
Tom Geiger Posted January 26, 2019 Posted January 26, 2019 Most folks build straight through. This is a fun event and we say it’s the annual opportunity to “Build like a sixth grader”. Pick a fairly simple kit that goes together well, something expendable, that you have multiple copies of. I was building a roll cage on a second chassis while paint dried on the first one. It’s a challenge to build a model in 24 hours, and satisfying when you succeed. And in the end you learn as a modeler. I find my building is now a bit more organized and systematic now. And the interesting thing is that the 24 hour model isn’t any worse than the ones we fret and sweat over!

Tom's right, I find the 24hr builds can be completely acceptable, are they gonna win shows, not likely but most people wouldn't be able to tell if you finished it in 24hrs or 24days unless you told them. Anyways, on to the update....apologies for not updating through the night like I said I would, I forgot.....anyways, I made it. WiP pics to follow with some finished shots in the Under Glass section shortly. Body was assembled and sprayed as one unit. Because of the buttress' on the Ford I normally would have sprayed those separately then added after paint but I was worried about marring the paint so I took my chances I'd get decent coverage under the buttress', and I did, mostly. TBH the Revell Ford GT 2 piece body is a much better way to go for painting than Tamiya's. Anyways primer'd with Gravity's 2K white primer then shot with Ford Liquid Red gold base coat ( all the other parts were done too, but I didn't photograph them) then the Liquid Red on top, this is a very thin colour and required a lot of paint to build up to the red, which I liked cause you can pic how deep you want the colour to look. Sorry the pics are not the best, I was using my cell phone and pretty much taking one pic or two then moving on with the build. After the Liquid Red I jumped to the decals, very simple on the Ford so it took no time at all. Three white stripe decals a Ford badge on the front and a GT badge on the rear then back into the booth for some ProForm Automotive 2K clear. While the body was drying I started in on the chassis. Very simple yet lots of suspension detail on the corners and that's about all. You get a suspension block for the front, rear and then the interior tub. The small engine top and pieces connect the back of the interior to the rear suspension block ( sorry no real pic of that) but it doesn't matter as none of it is visible once built. I had some issues with my blacks on the interior but once built you cant see in anyways so I didn't stress over it too much. I added some red to the dash to break up the black. This is extremely easy to do because the dash is made up of 5 pieces. Two top sections, a bottom and the two cosmetic inserts (red in mine). You can do the seat inserts too, but I didn't cause I was going to add some 4 point harness' but was running low on time so I left them out. You can also see the top of the engine spanning the gap between the interior and the rear suspension. The brake discs look amazing. The replicate Brembo's Carbon Ceramic set beautifully. I did my calipers body colour then did the discs in Vallejo liquid chrome then used Tamiya's panel line accent to darken them up. Not perfect but they work for this build. I forgot the center cap decals on the rims ( they were added before the end tho). One of the few lacking things on the Tamiya kit is the tire wall detail, or lack there of, no one wants to pay the royalty fees.... Even though there is a lack of engine detail Tamiya made up for it with the head light buckets. Each head light consists of 12 parts, 3 black housing pieces, three grey center pieces, three clear parts including the outer lenses and three decals. Fiddley little buggers but look amazing once done. And that's it for the WiP pics. Over all a relatively simple but nicely detailed kit. This kit is all about the body. The Ford has great lines and looks ultra fast sitting still. Tamiya did a wonderful job on this kit. I'll definitely be building a couple more, just to use some of the different colours available for this car. Thanks for looking in on my first competed build for 2019. Comments and criticisms welcome and appreciated as always.
Tommy124 Posted January 28, 2019 Posted January 28, 2019 Hi David, this is a beautiful result. Liquid Red has been my favorite color on the GT from day one and the Gravity colors red looks good on yours. Do I understand correctly that this requires a separate golden basecoat? Zero Paints has released that color now also but it doesn't have (and require) the metallic base...
